Anyway, the mention of Austin, and whether he was from there or not, led me to search for Austin India - just in case there was a city of Austin in the country. There wasn't, *but* the first link in Google was this: http://www.austinindia.org/
<snip>
And why in the heck would such a site be the first link on Google for that search?

Well, it is only the first if you use Google UK. I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that the url has austin & india in it. But, as this domain was registered in 1997, I have a hard time believing it has anything to do with this game.

A few new things I've remembered - Toby seemed to be proud of this ARG - saying that it was the biggest ARG launch ever, with over 30,000 people having gotten involved - are those figures correct?
What does he consider the launch? The initial post on Unfiction? The posts on lazylaces? Something else? And how is he counting these people? Actual websites hits? Unique IPs? Estimate of the number of people who would have heard about this word of mouth?
Personally, I find it hard to believe that this could be considered a bigger launch than I Love Bees. I'd even willing to bet that PXC could say that they had similiar, if not higher, numbers.

Yet more:

Ah, something else - can't believe I forgot this!

The first thing I did when I went online was to email him - as he'd asked! He said that to join in I should email him (he'd said - 'as you've probably guessed, my email address is anythingSPLATVibration13.com' - or maybe it was anythingSPLATtriskabiblios.com? I'll have to try that actually - damned memory). He also said that if you emailed him he'd then pass on your email and address to other people that had emailed him, leading to people receiving messages that would at first confuse, but eventually lead to the answers.

Again - not sure how it took so long to remember this!

did you deliver the 'package' to the cancer research shop on your own? Weren't you worried about what you might be delivering and take a peek inside?

Ah, never mind then (I'd forgotten that though I do use google.com, it does the thing and goes straight to the UK varient anyhow)

Heh, obviously I can't answer that, but on the off chance that I see him again I'll ask.

And was I Love Bees an ARG? I always had it down as simply a particularly targetted advertising campaign.

I did do so on my own (it's on my way home, and I was hardly about to go find some friends to walk me to the shop - plus I was worried it'd be shut by the time I got back - actually, I was lucky get there before the staff locked up, as it was just gone six o'clock) and I didn't look inside the package. I may be inquisitive, but I also think of myself as an honest person, and it did simply seem to be a large-ish envelope, with a card-backing inside, and a small object - about the right size for keys. I never heard them clink around, admittedly, but they seemed fairly tightly secured in the envelope.

Great. Just what I want. My email going out to a random bunch of strangers that can number over 30,000. Why not just sign me up to a bunch of spammer sites while you're at it?

It was actually both (as have been several others: The Beast, Perplex City, Art of the Heist). Just because the game is either trying to sell you something or make you more aware of certain products, doesn't mean that it can't be fun and entertaining.

Hum... it seems a bit much for him to ask you to deliver a package for a stranger you've just met when you don't know the contents. But then maybe I'm just a paranoid goody two shoes Very Happy

That crossed my mind, but as I have three email addresses - one for stuff I don't care about (hotmail), one for signing up for things online (yahoo), which filters out most spam anyway, and one 'private' one for my friends (which I'm not going to post up here, as that'd spoil the point somewhat), I wasn't too worried about it.

As such, I used my yahoo address - it should automatically junk most spam, and what does go through won't really bother me either.

I have multiple email address too. One specifically for ARGs. There is a measure of trust that we players have to have with PMs. And one of them is that the PMs will keep our confindence. If I had known that my information could possibly be going out to every other player in the game, I never would have sent in anything. There certainly wasn't any disclaimer to be found that our email address and whatnot would be shared.

Seriously, seriously bad form.

Hmm, I can see that would upset other people - but that is only what he *said*, and considering this whole setup he may not have been telling the truth - I have no reason to assume that everything he said to me was entirely (if at all) truthful!

The 'real life toby' might have just been some dodger pretending to be him and who actually is not involved in the game at all but had been following it (and saw a good opportunity to get some stranger to deliver a wierd package for him)

Or yprbest could be telling us porky pies

Or it could have been the real 'real life toby', and yprbest is genuine, but real real toby was lying.

Or it could all be true

Confused confused?

Well, for what it's worth I swear that I truly am not Toby, and that the guy I met said that he was. I'd also assume he was the 'real' Toby, as he had in his bag, amongst a lot of other stuff (books, a bible, and other things - funnily enough I resisted the urge to rifle through his belongings), two records made by teriyaki (the band he's in), one of which he passed on to me, asking me to experiment with it (mixing it, finishing the incomplete song 'drawing pictures in condensation' with my own music, and getting as many other people involved as possible). And also, if the package was indeed dodgy, the manager of the shop certainly received it in an odd place (with two other staff around)
