Three squares

Upon seeing the mysterious three-square symbol in Pietro's last password-protected directory, and again on the receda approach's posters, my thoughts wandered to the following diagram:

It's from page 257 of the Larousse Guide to Astronomy (ISBN 0-88332-094-0, and more or less my most cherished possession at the age of twelve, now out of print). It depicts a space-time diagram (with space shown from left to right, time up and down) of a Schwarzchild solution for the equations of general relativity in the vicinity of a massive object in empty space (commonly known as a black hole).

You can monkey with the coordinate system a little and depict this using a Penrose-Carter diagram:

I've borrowed this one from a French fellow that has very nice plain language explanations of these sorts of things. To make a long and complicated story short, the Schwarzchild solution presents a problem, that singularity you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try.

However, Roy Kerr's solution, that introduces rotation into the system, turns out rather differently. Here's the Penrose-Carter diagram for this solution (borrowed again from nrumiano, along with the following explanation):

nrumiano wrote:
  • The Penrose diagram clearly shows that the singularity is a temporal one, and can be avoided.
  • The path, in dark blue, of an observer coming from the past in universe #1 can cross the outer horizon, then the inner one. By avoiding the singularity, he can cross horizons again, and reappear in another universe.

I wouldn't bore you with this rather amateurish exploration of cosmology, but for two reasons: First, Perplex City is clearly somewhere 'else', potentially in the alternate universe sense. Second, there is a resemblance between the Penrose-Carter diagram for the Kerr solution (which offers a means by which information could pass from one universe to another), and the three-square glyphs found in Pietro's directory and upon the receda approach's poster (after rotating 45 degrees):

It could be a coincidence, and I hate to try and think to hard about what it means if the diagram is rotated 45 degrees but the space and time axes are not, but as long as the theme is stars and parallel universes, it's fun to ponder.

ah yes, well played, i remeber reading bout that in a brief history of time (perplexed profusely denies atrophieds accusations of geekyness), however the meaning of the sybol seems something of an irrelevance without more information about what this whole thing is about...

What about some sort of equinox link? The Brotherhood Of The Six are supposed to be celebrating 'The Lighting Of The Way'...

In-game website?

Hi all

This is my first posting so hi and hope I don't screw up!

Been trying to figure out what is possibly helpful to us on the receda approach poster. I noticed their debut album is called "The Next Power" so I tried findig websites about that, or sub-pages on www.therecedaapproach.com but, alas, nothing.

Then I thought, if we have The Third Power, then the Next power would be The Fourth Power:

www.thefourthpower.com

The site doesn't fill me with confidence that it is anything to do with PXC but thought I'd throw it in there, maybe it will give someone a bright idea!

J.

Um - it's kind of filling me with confidence right now..

Go to the site

Not only is it nicely ambigous - when you press control + A, look what happens... (then again, I am using firefox.. lemme try IE. Yeh it does it too in IE)

Hmmm WHOIS isn't telling me much about the sites registration however...

Edit: Holy trout I'm a retard!

I just did a WHOIS of perplexcity.com ... it expires on April 27th 2006 - same day as thefourthpower.com

Now - coincidence - probably

Also considering they dont use the same Registration site. PPC.com uses GoDaddy.com whereas FourthPower used Register.com

Um, what are you seeing with Ctrl+A? I'm not seeing anything (aside from a suspicious-lloking contact-info form).

I'm on a university computer right now, let me see if I can access some stuff and upload a picture.

Ill edit this with a yay-or-nay in a minute

Edit: http://www.geocities.com/gp_angelo/omgsquares.bmp

1.4 mb, sorry guys - paint wouldn't let me save JPEGs...

1) why the hell is it doing that
2) 2 squares end to end in a fantastically weird HTML glitch
3) maybe I'm just insane

As much as I'm thrilled that my first post generated some interest, I'm still not convinced I've stumbled across anything!

On my IE, I don't get multiple copies of the contact link. It's tenuous to hope that the boxes appearing might be a link to the Third Power boxes logo.

Or is it? Smile

As far as the Fourth Power website goes, it's OOG. The WHOIS information doesn't match with the WHOIS from all of the other sites. The IP information from the site also doesn't match up

You know the PMs could just be getting wise to our WHOIS technique. They may have camoflagued this site on purpose. Then again, this is the first and only site that we've found that was not registered with Go Daddy. I just think it's too much of a coincidence to let slip to the bottom of the thread list.

I'm pretty certain this is OOG. The site was built with a do-it-yourself online site builder. The kind you get for free when you register a name at some places. Even the "brotherhoodofthesix" site was at least done in something like FrontPage.

Also, thefourthpower doesn't actually host the web pages itself. It just redirects you to the site builder web server:
http://my.name-services.com/69795/page99.htm

There aren't any hidden links of any kind.

That site is pretty damn weird.

All the images used are 1px x 1px in size, (except for the shabby logo) and are then resized in the html code to specific sizes and placed in specific places on the page.

And it also has some javascript which is pointless at this point as it doesn't seem to get used...

Very strange indeed.

That's a pretty common trick that assures correct placement of things on the page.

A lot of web page authoring programs leave JavaScript cruft on the page that sometimes does not get used. For instance Dreamweaver seems pretty keen on putting in functions like "MM_preloadImages()," whether or not they actually get used.

Looking at the figure on the poster my first thought was that maybe they refer to the three kleebold plates that were somehow used in the theft/transport of the cube.
