Code in a classic Scifi story About a year and a half ago I bought Harlan Ellison's classic tale "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" from Fictionwise.com. This is what the site stated about the ebook:
Quote:
Probably Ellison's most well-known story. The tyrannical computer AM has taken over the world and now a few humans trapped inside it fight for survival. (Note: Palm versions of this story contain a character representation of a punch card graphic that the original story was published with. To view the original graphic see any of the other formats. The punch card graphic and the Palm character representation of it were approved by Mr. Ellison, and he tells us that both contain a message that few people have ever decoded.)
If you want to read the story, or look at the card graphic go here.
The character representation of the punch card graphic in my ebook read thusly:

0000000100100011010000010101
0110001000011010011110001001
Who can resist a challenge like that? I have almost gone crazy trying to solve it, so I thought I would enlist my new genius friends here. If it is really easy I am going to be embarrassed.

Thank You drizjr! 1.5 years of frustration and it only took you an hour and a half to find my post and solve it.
A year and a half looking at the binary and it was the punchcard I should have focused on!
Thanks for the satisfaction drizjr.
And thanks for pointing out how stupid I should feel urthstripe!

Oh don't worry, I feel pretty stupid too. But I blame it on you, cause I kept looking at the binary. :-p. But I liked it just for reading the story, it was pretty freaky.

truly my pleasure All my gratitude goes to the ARG community, because *everything* I know about codes, I learned here. (It's really amazing the amount of knowledge one picks up along the way.)
The baudot code has been used on other ARGs; I was just lucky I recognized it.
Btw, I still can't make head nor tail of the binary.

Thanks for the lesson drizjr.
I went back to the punchcard graphic with my newfound skillz and got
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Letters:COGITO_ERGO_SUM
Latin for I think, therefore I am. As you already said.
That solution ties in nicely with the name of the supercomputer and the rage of stifled creativity.
