Contacting Amazon, EBay and PayPal

I just spent some time trying to find a number where I can actually speak to a real person at Amazon, and, surprise surprise, found absolutely nothing on their site (although I did find their manifesto, which claimned they are trying to create "one of the worlds largest customer-centric companies" - a little bit of a hypocritical thing to say, given that, as a customer, you cannot reach anyone that works there).

I Googled further, and found this site, which has a load of contact information for Amazon, as well as EBay and PayPal.

I was so pleased that I finally found this, I thought I'd share it so noone else has to suffer the same frustration.

Slate's Timothy Noah views it as a public service to ferret out these sort of numbers, ever since he managed to find the Holy Grail of customer service numbers, Amazon's. He publishes it in his column about once a year.

He's currently trying to hunt down the iTunes number.

amazon

Fi - This may not help you much but I got Amazon's number here in the US pretty easily by just calling 1-800-555-1212 and asking for it. That is the 800 phone number information line. Not all companies opt to be listed on it, so when that happens I just call information in the city of the company's headquarters for Amazon it is Seattle. To do that you just need the area code of the city followed by 555-1212. Locally in NY I can dial 411 but I don't think that would work for you. Smile

For itunes - I think calling Apple would work. Apple
1 Infinite Loop
Cupertino, CA 95014
408.996.1010

There is a contact us page on the Apple site.

The only time the headquarters operator at a company wasn't helpful, I just asked to be transferred to the legal department instead. Somehow, I got the number I needed right away.

If she hadn't given it to me I would have just told whoever answered the phone in the legal department the problem I was having and asked for the number of the department I needed. Lawyers hate to be bothered with this stuff and look into why people can't find the number. I think this also works if you ask for the company President, etc.. I am just more comfortable asking for the lawyers and that works. Smile

Maybe -- see the link to the Slate article above, though. In trying to get an iTunes help number, the author got bounced around quite a bit by Apple and didn't really end up with anything.

Can I be that guy who addresses the naked elephant in the room (or was that the pink woman?) anyway...

Does this mean potentially that MC is looking to distribute PC cards via these channels? (with dr. evil pinky-up-to-lips pose)

(sorry, someone had to ask. Wink)

Funny seeing this, as iTunes is annoying the CRAP out of me...

I bought and downloaded two MP3's, two tracks of the same album, which, after downloading, appear to be the same song! And no, this is not the case on the real album, which Amazon track-previews have proved.

So, I think, lets click "Support" in the iTunes Music Store menu. I get a 404 page on the Apple website. Great. So, I click around a bit to get to the iTunes section, then Customer Service, and in their FAQs is nothing about the possibility of them doing something wrong.

So, I click on the "Get help buying music" section, and scroll down to "Still having trouble?" (yes I am!). I fill out the stupid form, where none of the options in the "Specific Request" dropdown box match my question, but oh well... so I click "Send" and...

I get this error message:

Code:
Request stopped

 Error: Invalid email address: appleid
- Your request has not been processed.

Bloody hell it is! I quadruple checked it, I even copy/pasted it from my iTunes Account Information page, but no dice, the form won't let me send anything...

SO, someone at Apple tell me already, how am I going to get any support!? I would almost let it go because we are talking €0.99 here, but I hate companies getting away with this simply because they make temselves unavailable in all possible ways... Evil or Very Mad

Hah, so, I yelled about this for a bit on the Apple dicsussion forums, making some remarks about them showing they don't care about customer service, and promptly I got a message from one of the moderators telling me he sent my problems to Customer Support and if I would be so kind as to rephrase my wording a little...

So just now I recieved an e-mail from them saying they are so very sorry and here are ten free downloads...

I love it when big corporations compensate their lack of service by bribing dissatisfied customers Razz

I'm just bumping this up to say that BoingBoing has posted a link to a database called Find A Human. Looks bloody marvellous. If you're in the US.
