[NEWS] Perplex City "Google Map" In The Works

Tony Walsh has the juice over at Clickable Culture:

Quote:
Alternate reality game Perplex City involves collectible playing cards used in problem solving, and takes place over the backdrop of a city inhabited by puzzle-loving human-like aliens. An interactive map of the city, built using the Google Maps system and the Perplex City cards, is now in the works. The creator of Perplex City map, known only by the sinister monicker Daffy, told me via email that it was built with techniques described at the Google Maps API Wiki Mapki.com--overlaying custom maps over existing Google maps of Earth.

"The project is only in early stages at the moment," writes Daffy. "I am currently working on getting all of the locations on the map into a database, which will then be searchable by name or type. It will then place markers on the map for any results, which will be clickable like the markers on Google maps to show their names and further details if available."

Splendid stuff, I'm sure you'll agree. It is sort of implied that the PXC map will be overlayed over an Earth map, something which will please those among us who consider the city to have a direct Earth equivalent... but personally, I think that's just a bit of a misunderstanding.

Just like that article that said the cube was buried in London! Not that I'd mind all that much, of course... Very Happy

Uhm... hi. I feel as if I should say something in this thread, even though I already announced it in the other one.

Yeah, it's a bit of a misunderstanding. What I told him was that I used techniques that are usually used to overlay custom maps over the Earth, and modified those techniques to suit the non-Earth map. Google still thinks it's dealing with the Earth, and points on the map still have a latitude and longitude that lines up with some point on the Earth, but these don't mean anything besides a way to reference specific places to add markers and things.

Anyway, expect version 2 within a few days. I have the search functionality working, and an interface for it. All I need to do is enter the rest of the data into the database and it'll be ready.

No way Josè, I can't believe I missed a whole thread! Even if it was tucked away in the obscure corner of the Puzzle Map section (although obviously the perfect place for it.) Weirdly, I have an RSS thing that should nudge me about new threads, but it never seemed to appear.

Anyway, excellent work Daffy, and with great embarassment I shall now lock my own thread. Embarassed
