[HUMOR] Names of card pairs

I was trying to learn more about poker because I want to play poker as well as the ARG. And I want lots of chips even if they don't count.

I found this site that calculates the odds of getting two cards as pocket cards. The funny thing is many of the combinations have names.

We all know that Aces and eights is the Deadman's Hand ( because Wild Bill Hickok famously held two pairs of Aces and eights when he was shot in the back) but did you know:

a four and a two is a "Lumberman's Hand" (because of wood being 2 by 4)

an Ace and a King is " Walking Back to Houston" (because of tendency to overplay)

a five and a seven is "Heinz"

an eight and a ten is "tetris"

many of these references are to old things - but they are funny.

Oh goodness, there are lots and lots more of those Hold'em starting hand nicknames. Off the top of my head:

88 - Octopi (octopi have 8 tentacles) / little Oldsmobile (after the model "eighty-eight")

98 - Oldsmobile (after the model "ninety-eight")

JJ - fish hooks

J5 - motown / jackson five / jurassic 5 (my favorite hip-hop group)

T2 - Brunson (named after the hand with which Doyle Brunson won back-to-back World Series of Poker main event championships) [T is a 10]

AK - big slick

A2 - little slick

69 - dinner for two / big lick

Q3 - gay waiter / San Francisco busboy (queen with a trey)

AJ - Ajax

QQ - Gabor Sisters / Hilton Sisters / Sigried and Roy

KQ - marriage / Kournikova (after Anna Kournikova: it looks good but never wins anything)

55 - presto (like a magician showing you both open hands with 5 fingers on each)

27 - the hammer (the worst starting hand possible)

KK - cowboys

AA - pocket rockets / american airlines / bullets

T5 - woolworth / five and dime

95 - Dolly Parton (workin' 9 to 5)

K9 - canine

57 - Heinz (57 varieties)

KJ - kojak (like the TV show)

76 - trombones (76 trombones in the big parade...)

99 - Hellmuth (Phil Hellmuth won the 1989 WSOP main event with this hand)

77 - hockey sticks

44 - magnum (.44 magnum gun) / sailboats (the fours look like the mast and sail of a sailboat)

J and 5 is called "Jackson Five" or "Motown" (as in [read it aloud] JacksandFive)

Two twos are called a pair of "ducks" as the 2 looks kinda like a duck's head and half a body above the water. (sort of.) And sometimes they're called "deuces" (I know most people know that, but what the heck.)

Two Kings are sometimes called "Cowboys"

Two Aces are called "Bullets" due to the A shape kindasorta lookin like bullets headed upwards.

And finally, while not a pair, you'll most likely hear about A-K billed as "Big Slick" Cuz it's a great "nut" to start with (nut=first two cards dealt directly to you), but can be slippery as it's not a sure thing to pair anything with the great cards.

Um, I'm certain there's more that I cannot think of right now.

Other card terminology: "One-eyed Jacks" refer to the Jack cards (2 of the four) with their head to the side, so you only see one eye...

"Suicide Kings" are 2 of the four kings with their weapon drawn into/behind their head. (I believe it's a sword and an axe, is that right?)

And that's all I can think of right now, more to come, I'm sure.

I believe the Suicide King is reserved just for the King of Hearts. He actually has his sword behind/through his head.
The King of Diamonds w/ the axe is just holding it near his head. Not fatal yet.

84

I kept getting an 8 and a 4 the other day

84 - Known as "Orwell" cause of the book 1984.

also it seems some pairs have more than one name.

27 - "Beer Hand" - because with this hand you need a beer, or if you win with this hand you have to buy everyone a beer or only a drunk person would play this hand.

Probably my favorite pocket name is 4 Club/4 Spade. My friends and I refer to it as the Darth Vader hand, because the holder controls the dark side of the fours Very Happy

Me and my friends call three twos a 'flurry of twos' because it's unexpected, and underated, and NEVER loses. Hee.

Sigh. Leave it to the Canadian to know that 88 is also called "the Snowmen".

My personal favorite?

77 - Pocket Mullets

Don't get any better than beating the pants off of someone with a couple mullets. Shocked
