For some reason I'm reminded of that simpson's episode about the Flying Hellfish - the gun's a clue to some sort of buried/hidden treasure. During WWII, thedealer gets ahold of it (wins it in a game of Tombstone Hold Em?) and passes it on to Lucy. The Gambler finds out about it from another member of the squad, then comes after the gun.

The Colt Navy is, correct me if I'm wrong, a 19th century pistol. Cowboy era in fact. In WWII the Us Army sidearm was a Colt 1911, which is a .45 caliber automatic pistol.
The Wild West was also the birthplace of poker. Could the gun be some sort of poker artifact? That's why our heroine is so good?
It could even be the gun Wild Bill hickok had when he was shot...

according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker, Poker's exact origins are debatable, but its probably from before the "wild west" period

i thought that there was a reference to the gun being from the American Civil War somewhere, can't find it now though. that would put it in the 1860's. (i had said "Civil War Era" on the ballistics thread, but i'm not sure how i knew that)

as for the gun bestowing the owner with supernatural luck or poker skills? that's a very interesting idea

zoombini- that's what i thought too when someone mentioned the Gambler and the Buyer being Lucky's old army budd(y/ies)
