[EMAIL UPDATE] Sylvia Salk - 2005-09-27

Quote:

My friends,

No words can ever convey to you how much it means to me that you saved
my life. For Cassandra, especially, who sent your friend Violet to me
like a bolt out of the sky, I am forever in your debt. That day, it
was... it was dark, and I think I'm better off not dwelling on it. I
realise now that Pietro would want me to live. For him, I will live.
Thank you, and thank you again, for not giving up on me the way I gave
up on myself.

I'm going to stay with my aunt in the country for a while. I need to put
all of this behind me, and I need to be away from the remnants of
Pietro's and my life together. My doctors agree this would be for the
best, so I'm leaving tonight.

Just one last thing... I've remembered what the words were that Monica
said to me... before, the ones that didn't make any sense. I don't know
if this will help you to finish Pietro's work or to make sense out of
all of this tragedy, but I think you should hear it. It's strange, isn't
it, to think how I could have died, too, and you might never have known?

Anyway, the thing she said, the thing I didn't understand, it was, 'We
never held it, it was already gone.'

I hope it helps you.

Sylvia

Ooooh, the plot thickens... Assuming she's talking about the cube already being gone, I think it was Sente after all Smile

Assuming we are talking about the cube (and there's not a doubt in my mind that we are) I would imagine that who ever organised the 'team of four' is still responsible for the theft and used them to distract attention from the actual theft and how that took place.

The murders of the rest of the team would indicate this.

I agree that Monica probably was talking about the Cube, but doesn't 'held' seem like an odd word to choose?

Hi Stacy,

Hope you're keeping well. I haven't been able to find out a Reynolds ioniser does (other than what all ionisers do, of course - ionise stuff) but I managed to dig up something on Klebold plates. Klebold plates are experimental prototype devices, constructed to make highly accurate physical measurements in 3D. I know that's vague and it doesn't say anything about how they work, but it's the most I can tell you.

I hope this helps!

Kurt

And they found three of these plates? so a cube could have been simulated with these and the ioniser and it wasn't found out till the theft, and all they appear to have is University equipment. I think that those were the "Cube". Holyoke was killed because who ever hired them didn't believe that the cube wasn't in existance to them so he thought it was stolen by a petty underling ... It's true that i'm typing 99% SPEC here, but it seems a decent theory to me.

Yes, but it fits with Talos' spec above. The saw the cube (or thought they did - actually saw an insubstantial replica (a hologram?)) but never held it.
(Talos - I know this is what you were probably getting at, but I thought I'd spell it out).

Edit: Further thoughts. So if the cube was missing when the theft team arrived, the first question to answer is: when did it disappear? Who can answer this question for us?

Perhaps the Cube has been gone for some time? If memory serves the Academy stopped investigating the cube some time back so maybe no-one would notice if the cube had been taken already. Actually, the more I think about this the less I think it likely. I'm guessing the cube was taken no more than 24 hours before the 'theft' by Monica's crew.

This leaves us with 3 possible options that I can think of...

1 - Someone got there first.

2 - The cube realised that it was going to be stolen and moved itself in self-defence (has been spec'd before).

3 - She's lying.

Should we continue to search for the mysterious V? The fact that Monica and Holyoke were murdered seems to indicate that he may have still had something to do with it, even if they didn't actually steal it that night.

About the choice of words - "we never held it" - this could also mean that it disappeared in front of their eyes, before they could take it. Again linked to the self defence idea.

It was on public display in the Academy Museum, not locked in a cupboard somewhere. I think someone would notice if the main attraction of the Museum wasn't there.

ether Sente himself stole the cube (this is probably likely... hes the criminal mastermind, I know it!) or someone with extremely high access took the cube and i can think of just the person, the old museum curate who was fired for being crooked before he could steal anything, except maybe he already had stolen something...

EDIT: Im not sure of the chronology, and what he was curate of, can someone check on the above spec and aldo, he did steal something, namely millions of lecks worth of art work

No, someone would notice if the main attraction of the Museum didn't appear to be there. One of the ideas being kicked around is that a"hologram" (or other suitably techno-futuristic version) of the cube was substituted in the place of the actual cube. Who would notice? And if someone did notice, the thief would be long gone.

OF course, none of this addresses why someone would want the cube in the first place. My thoughts:
    1) terrorist purposes (if you don't stop doing such and such, I'll destroy the cube)
    2) ransom (I won't return the cube until I'm given... one... million... lecks!)
    3) someone has found a function of the cube and intends to use it (weapon, power source, mental enhancer for PCAG athletes, etc.)
    4) pre-arranged sale to an eccentric collector (it'll look perfect next to my skeleton of the elephant man!)
    5) hatred (bloody cubists stole my daughter! I'll take their cube, that'll show them!)
    6) religion (we must recover our holy artifact!)
    7) political power (I'll steal it, then squander loads of money pretending to look for it, and then pretend to find it)
    Cool?

I'm on board for 3-7, but I imagine we would have heard something by now if 1 or 2 were in play. (After all, it was stolen almost 2 years ago.)

Considering what we've learned so far today, aren't we looking for two motives now? One for the V/Q/K/C team, and one for whoever actually stole it?
