Enough money for commercial...

I just got a role in a film, AND I'm in charge of advertising for it. It's just an indie film, but there's a TON of interest in the community for it, so it's pretty well funded. Of course, I'm totally into alternate reality gaming, as well as being BTS of said games. So I'm interested in making an ARG for the community of promoting the movie.

This question doesn't really matter in how the game is made or ANYTHING; I just wanted some feedback from you all about this, and get your thoughts on it. At what point does a game become commercial, as opposed to grassroots? Its purpose is to promote a movie, which is made in order to generate money, not for a cause, but for us as jobs. So that makes it look commercial.

I dunno, do you guys think it's the amount of money supporting a project that makes a game commercial? Or is it the intended purpose of the game? Or is it a bad idea to pigeonhole this altogether?

EDIT: Should I have a poll? AND, does this thread belong in definitions instead? Feel free to move it.

woah - go Clint! I know a Movie Star!!! Smile

To me, I believe that the definitions are as they are in general.

a Commercial anything is something that is done in an effort to further a commercial interest / gain. Thus, if an arg is done to promote a product/service/etc, it has a commercial interest (ie, purpose is to generate a buzz to gather revenue), thus it is a commercial game.

That's not to say that because it's promoting something, it will be good. Not at all. It's just a definition. Much like a professional sports player is someone that gets paid to play their sport. A professional sports team are a team that are paid by a company to compete in a sport. Take any of the Japanese Manufactured Formula 1 racing teams, for example. Honda hasn't placed EVER that I can remember, and yet they are still professional, so they suck, but they're still paid to do it.

I don't reckon you should have a poll. I reckon you should just do what you think feels right.

Usually the "commercial" games (as has been mentioned) - are to promote/generate interest/introduce a product. It is also backed by money from said commercial product in terms of funding - not that this is better or worse - but it generally means that the purse strings are not as tight in what they can spend on things. So a ARG to promote a movie would be considered commercial [reference: The Beast was to promote (&add to the experince of) the movie A.I.)]

Grassroots generally don't have a product that the are activily pushing. It also means that the people behind the game are usually finding the game out of their own pockets. Few of those producing a grassroots game have the same level of resources that Commercial backing can provide. This does not mean the quality will be any less, but it may mean that there may be fewer top level domain name sites, and fewer of the more expensive modes of contact (primarily telephone calls & faxes) and more things done via e-mail & letter or on web sites.
