[13 books] [Assigntment from Toby] Short story

I think it was apropriate to open a new topic for this, so you guys can tell what you think about my "assignment" and I can easily ask for feedback and help if I get stuck during it. And ofcourse, when it's done I'll post the result here too. So, on to bussines:

Last night (for you guys it was this morning I supose, I'm in GMT+1) I finally got replies to my messages. Not from Islington, but from Toby, who apparantly gets Islington's mail forwarded to him. He asked me to tell something about myself, so I did, and then he replied with this message:

Quote:
Thats very interesting! Nice to meet you.
Islongton has hinted at Netherlands so maybe you;ll be in Luck
In the meanTime maybe if you wanted to you could write a 3 chapter short story (no longer than 3333 words) about the Past, Present and Future of Triscal Islington. As it relates to you, your community and the Greater World around You.
I'm quite busy so I'll let you get on with it.
If you can't be Inspiring, Be Inspired!
Toby

I told him I am a bit of a writer, but I also said I'm not a very good one. I think that's what he refering to with the "if you can't be Inspiring, Be Inspired!". I think this is something he wants me to do for myself, maybe as a preparation for what's ahead of me. But no matter if it is, I will do it.

Three chapters, past, present, future (think he is hinting at my signature?), each 1111 words I supose. I think I can handle that, but I wonder why he is so fond of the number 3? Is 3 to Toby what 13 is to Islington? Or maybe he's refering to christian Trinity (as I told him I am a christian). I hope anyone else here has some thoughts on it?

I replied to him, asking wether I should write in English, Dutch, or both. in the last case, both stories will differ slightly from each other, as I can't make a literal translation and keep to the 3333 words.

Regarding the content of this short story, I could use some help. So far I know these things about Islington: His first name is Triscal, given to him by his french mother. An area in London is called Islington too, but I don't know if that's a coïncidence. He is the caretaker of the 13 books library who is blinking thorugh time since 2013, when the 13 books got lost.
I think I missed quite a bit, so could anyone fill me in on any details about Islington?

Well as I said I could use a hand with the details about Islington. As far as I can see the things I said in my posts above are all we know about Triscal, but I dearly hope I missed something and one of you can point me out what that is, because I could use some more info to work with Smile

I think you're doing the right thing posting here, and you're right about the inspiring/inspired thing too. i.e. if you are not able to inspire others by being inspiring about writing about Iz, then you should be inspired by others so that you can write... So we should all be able to help to inspire you, so that you can complete your writing task...

One fact about Islington - he gets a bit crazy / incoherent around the full moon

Very cool!

I have one request....if Toby does not get back to you with a different answer....could you write it in English?

Wink

As far as more info.....we will need to look back through the threads....but I know that Islington has mentioned places he was/will be and people he met/will meet. This might help with Raeden's story.

Just a thought---should we perhaps start a 'task' thread? Thus far (outside of the clues leading to Book Zero) there have been 2 distinct requests. 1)Share books 2) Write story.

There very well could end up being a 4,5,6, and on...and on...and.

Carry on.

Jos is my real name, but I censored my last name and the name of my family's server. It's a habit of mine to not put up too much personal info on public places.

This ought to be fun. I'll provide something for you guys to understand my document when it's finished.

I could write one word in English and then two words in Dutch and so on, or I could just throw in English words and sentences in at random. I think the last option is less structured, so not really something I'd normally do, but I have a feeling Iznibs will like it better that way. I can't really decide which option I will use (I am open to suggestions), but I must figure out before writing the final version.
So far, I have only worked on this in my head today, but tomorrow I will make a start on the first draft. By hand, since I don't have a typewriter anymore, and computerwriting usually ends up in editing drafts, which is always bad.

Only one thing I don't understand: why did he write "mailto:islington" at the bottom of his message. Does this mean I have to send the document to Islington when it's finished?

I think it might be helpful to your task (and useful to all of us in general) if we were to break up the previous threads etc. into manageable chunks which could be distributed between a number of us and gone through to glean information about Islington for you. We would also be likely to find some new snippets that we have missed so far. Likely sources are:

• Orkid's LJ and her comments pages
• All of the Lazylaces comments and Graeme's updates (I think we're on the 6th new thread over there)
• All of the threads here (especially the Trailhead and Book Zero ones)
• Toby's blog
• Yann's blog
• The vibration 13 site
• Mountain Girl's off-UF forums

(please suggest others, but should be primary sources, not secondary sites)

I would like to be the first volunteer. Hopefully if we can get enough people together, the chunks will be small enough to be do-able. Who knows what we will discover, going over the entrails? (Toby already edited his first post substantially).

So what do you say? Rogi, Withe, Angel, Shylil and all the others, are you up for it? Half-hearted seekers need not apply, successful applicants must deliver on their promises. If there is general support for this idea, we can maybe create a new thread for any info we come across (first suggestion : [13books][Reading Backwards]

We could maybe start after the tumultuous events of Sunday and Monday are over...

I'm in, as time allows.
Wading through the contacts will be tough. We may have to assign vlaues to the bits of information denoting our level of confidence that it was truly a valid communication.

As always:

I'M IN!
(As soon as I get finished reading my book, which will take no time at all.)

I'll start gathering what I can. I DO have this to immediately offer as far as Islington's description goes. This is quoted from my AIM chat with Orkid.
Quote:
orkidquantum: see, I actually SAW Islington
orkidquantum: which to me, makes it less of a game, more of a reality
Withe Bartbi: yes i know you mentioned it on your blog.
orkidquantum: so I'm staying out of the 'Game' discussion
Withe Bartbi: do you remember what he looked like?
orkidquantum: Yeah
Withe Bartbi: I understand, and I don't blame you.
orkidquantum: only a glimpse
orkidquantum: but he had long hair
Withe Bartbi: i have my own ideas
orkidquantum: tall
Withe Bartbi: of what he looks like.
orkidquantum: kind of striking looking
orkidquantum: what do you think?
Withe Bartbi: well, i had the long hair too, but a man who has seen way too much for his age.
Withe Bartbi: the true embodiment of a scholar.
orkidquantum: I wonder how old he is?
Withe Bartbi: someone who catches your eye and you just want to "know" them
Withe Bartbi: i dunno.
orkidquantum: cos, I couldnt really age him
orkidquantum: He looked... maybe middle age, maybe late twenties
orkidquantum: hard to say
orkidquantum: no grey though
Withe Bartbi: well, i didn't think any older than thirties
orkidquantum: no
Withe Bartbi: and I'm sure he's seen more than his years

I'm still smacking myself on the forhead for that one, (me and my big mouth) I wish I had just shut up and let her talk, now. It would have been a lot more helpful to you if I had, Raeden.
