[META -- PM IDENTITY SPOILERS] Those pesky PMs
loismustdie68 wrote:
does anyone else think this is going to be big? it seems to have a lot of potential. and it also seems to be very 4orty 2wo-ish. im not saying it is. im just saying it kinda has that ILB feeling. does anyone else feel the same?
Which brings up a META point.
What is/should be the etiquette for mentioning precisely whom, theoretically, we believe is behind this?
I mean, when we played ILB, we didn't know about "4orty2wo Entertainment." There was some minor speculation that it was "the same people that did the Beast," but it had been a while since the Beast, so the connection seemed a lot more tenuous. I'm not sure, considering I had no prior knowledge of anyone involved (with the exception of having read some of Sean Stewart's books), that it would have made a difference to my experience if I had been able to go visit their website, but I can't say it wouldn't have made a difference either.
Do we want to openly spec about this, at the risk of ruining some of the mystery for the first-timers? Do we think that it won't matter to them? Do we want to make it a point of etiquette to just say "the PMs," rather than "4orty2wo" or any specific names (if it is even them ).
I'm not trying to advocate for any specific behavior, here. I'm just asking, now, before things get
too crazy
crazier, while we still have a chance, if we want to standardize our name usage.
Thoughts?

Well, it's gotta be someone big. That ad is all over GameFAQs now, so I'm hoping it really is them.

well i didnt want to spoil anything i was just pointing out that it seemed big. i caould go edit my post. but i think youre right maybe we shouldnt start discussing PMs. but i dont think it would ruin the game.

I think we can continue to say "The PMs". They've left clues on LCP for the more seasoned players to easily figure out who they are, but otherwise I don't think we need to refer to them or have a discussion about what their motives are. (Unless it's a private discussion somewhere )

In the past, the etiquette has always been to just politely not mention it.

Actually, welcome to the old-timers block. A number of us had knowledge of who was behind ILB, beyond just simple speculation. Several us figured out Jane was involved fairly early on despite her having not worked on the Beast. We just chose to let speculation go where it would and those that were new or not very active in the community had the joy of speculation (is it? could it really be?) without having to break the illusion of the game reality by knowing just who or what it was aside from something cool.
Every game, especially the larger ones, go through a phase where some people engage in "PM hunting". Word gets out and it becomes, as you say, "minor speculation" to the masses while for a few it is more of a fact. At least that is how it has been in the past. Whether that helps with the illusion of a curtain or the sanctity of the game is probably up for debate, and I think most of you know where I'd stand on that. I'm not saying we should follow exactly what has been done before, but we may want to keep in mind that if the PMs really wanted to be known as the PMs, they have ways to do so (press releases, tips to ARGN, a signature of sorts on the game's meta level, a little inside joke in the game, etc etc etc).
Or, on preview, what Ehsan said.

Upon reflection, that seems like the wisest course to me.

Not that I would know anything about that.

PMs Heh - of course everyone always speculates that 4orty2wo is behind everything that happens so why should this be any different?
Joking, I never had much interest in PM outing or whatever and especially not sharing any private conversations. That would not be in good taste anyway. Private is private.
I think calling the PMs the PMs has the distinct benefit of being accurate for any game at any time!

If this is turns out to be grassroots, the PMs are my Gods now.
But with the numerous ads on GameFAQs, I don't think we have to worry about that.

I didn't play ILB, so I don't know that much about the PM's that created it, but I would say the biggest hint as to their identity would be the full house graphic on the home page of LCP; fours over twos.

Excellent point Enaxor!
However I will just continue to call them the "PMs" and ignore their likely identity.
Spec on the product behind the promotion would seem to be fair game. Knowing about Halo was very useful in ILB. The same could be true here.
Based on platform support it is unlikely to be Apple Computer. Perhaps that other operating system company.

After doing a fair amount of searching, I am pretty sure I know who the PM's are. Since it seems like most people don't want to know, I won't divulge (although you can PM me if you really want to know).

Considering that one of the avatars is wearing a t-shirt for a PSP game.
I'm not so sure.
