Hat Tour Stop -

I'm in Honolulu and I can get some pictures with various hula-type people, and in Waikiki. Between myself and New Zealand, we've got the Pacific Rim more than covered!

(Nuts, and I just got back from Rapa Nui (Easter Island) a month ago!)

I thought someone posted about a visit to the Evergreens in Brooklyn, and perhaps I'm wrong, but it's still showing as not solved on the allin page. Has anybody tried it?

Given the final result in Bachelor's Grove, I assume the answer for the Evergreens is "2".

Heh, I thought it might be a "2" as well, but they'd have to incorporate some sort of way to include a curve in the proceedings, otherwise the intrepid Brooklyn team will be inclined to answer, "Z."

ETA: Besides! The Brooklyn location does not have a SHAPE as its TELL ME answer. It has a NAME. I suppose there could be a shape made from the route he prescribes, but that is not the ultimate goal of that place.

Hey, NY peeps! Are any of you planning on getting out there? Maybe we need to mobilize friends and such to get that one completed.

In Lucky's reply to mine and 4D's Bachelor's Grove favor, he mentioned that us helping him out is helping him to tell his story. Perhaps these location-specific ones (beyond being cool places on their own) will help advance the game once the task is completed? I kinda doubt that Lucky would've gone to so much trouble to get us to these historic/cool locations just to have us engage in casual morbid tourism, y'know?

Evergreens

It has been raining hard here every day since the task was given. That coupled with the neighborhood the cemetery is in and the long ride to get out there has dampened our zeal. bags and I may try for tomorrow.

But, let's face it, getting people to go to events outside of the city is not simple. Lack of cars may be a reason for that. Perhaps at the live event here in the city we can create a database of players who will do tasks or errands.

Totally understandable!

I had no idea it was so rainy. Sad Good luck, though.

Sendt in two favors today

Hey,
I sent in two favors today, and I thought I'd share. These were done at the Mission Dolores cemetery here in San Francisco.

First, for Victor:

Quote:
I went to the cemtery today to pay my respects.
I was hoping to see Carlotta, but she wasn't there. Here's a picture of me
there, contemplating the spirit realm (I think Victor would approve of the
location... if only I had his hat).

Two who are, though, are Charles and Arrabella Cora. Carles was a well
known (and very successful) gambler. Belle was a whore. They found true
love.

If anyone was dealt an injustice, it was Charles and Belle. Charles was
lynched by a mob for what appears to have been a completely justifiable
homicide in self defense. Belle lost her love.

What better folks to sympathize with our poor Victor. I am sure that they
would want Victor to be well. After thinking a while, they whispered to
me

"Abraca! Errol shall care!"

showing that even the great are saddened at the premature passing of
incredible potential, and showing that, long from now, when Errol joins
Victor Elsewhere, he'll want to see what visions Victor's been creating
(if only we could view his documentaries of the hereafter).

You can find out more about Charles and Belle here.

Second, for Kink:

Quote:
While visiting the cemetery today, I ran into Mary A. Church Ellis. I
don't know her, but she had plenty to tell me. It seems she led a hard
life, and she was full of curses to share, many of them suitable for our
not-so-dearly departed Kink.

There were literally dozens that she imparted to me. "His hum a cellar
cry" she said. "Allah Cry, "Curse Him!" (and I do not believe she is
Muslim, but in the hereafter, aren't all gods the same?

The one I liked, though, the one of which Kink is most deserving, is
wishing him "Harm, a chilly curse".

Hard not to feel sorry for a guy, with such vitriol being thrown his way,
but it was clear that Mary understood that Asses like Kink don't deserve a
good rest, at least not until they earn it.

New favors!

At Charter Street Burial Ground, Salem, MA:
Quote:
It's the Salem time of the year, isn't it? Harvest coming in. Puritans and witches and a big orange moon…

I have seven souls for you to visit. Bring a 54-card poker deck with you.

o Death is a debt to nature due
Paid the debt and so must you.
o There is a world above
Where parting is unknown
A long eternity of
Formed for the good alone
o Lean not, twill pierce thee to the heart
A broken reed at best; but oft a spear
On which peace bleeds, and hope expires.
o He is not dead sleepeth.
o Time was stood as you do
And view the dead as thou dost me
E'er long you'll lay as low as I
And others stand and thee.
o The sweet remembrance of just
Shall flourish when they sleep in dust.
o This stone has something great to teach
And what you need to learn
For Graves my Friends most loudly preach
Men's Concern.

* SHOW ME you and any friends laying out a special hand of 7-Card Stud by the grave of Col. John Hathorne. Use the 7 graves you visited above (and what you already know from Tombstone Hold 'Em) to figure out exactly which poker cards I want to see in your hand.
* TELL ME what the epitaphs do not.

At Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, MO:

Quote:
The gateway city, and in it, another kind of gateway, from one world to another…

1. Off in the northern corner lies half of a famous duo of explorers, so it'd probably be appropriate to give you a little navigational aid to get you started: 38° 41' 54.48" N, 90° 13' 46.69" W. Find the mountain lion who needs dental work.
2. Now, beginning on the road to the east of this marker, follow the road south until you arrive at the 4 th intersection. Now, diagonally to your left, you'll see a broken down cannon in a shroud belonging to a Dragoon.
3. Westward on the road to the north of the cannon, always westward, until the road turns south again. Once you head south, continue to the first intersection. In the southwest corner, you'll find Sadie Waters asleep for an unknown time at the foot of an obelisk.
4. East of Sadie, return to the road. Head south, then turn left, then right, then left, then straight, then stop at the crossroads. Head into the plot on the far left. At the base of a large tree, you'll see another obelisk, this time for Thomas Benton.
5. Find the road East of Benton's spire. Turn south, then follow the path, turning left at the Y, then straight through the crossroads, then right at the T, then to the crossroads, where you will stop. Almost directly to the east lies another obelisk, that of a genius, erected by his associates.
6. Now south further, following the road along the lake. Continue straight through the crossroads at the SE corner of the lake, and though the road twists and turns, follow it through the following two crossroads until you reach a third. There, on the far left corner, prepare to be stunned. This is the Shadow Box Girl, the lovely Italian behind a pane of glass, who never returned the love of the man who now forever lies at her feet.
7. Finally, continue along the road you traveled, to the next crossroads, where you will turn left. Head north on this path, then make a hard right to head southeast, until you come to the circular Mausoleum of my distant kin, virtually in front of you.

Now:

* SHOW ME you and any friends with Sadie Waters.
* TELL ME the sum of the known years of death of those you visited.

Did you know Sam Ligaya got killed on his birthday? A hell of a thing. Blow out your candles and say good night. Show me the tombstone of someone who died on his or her birthday—just like Sam did.

He wasn't a bad detective, Harry. Smart. Good people skills. Just spent long enough looking into the darkness, you know, that the darkness finally looked back.

Find me a grave at least 50 years old. Study the tombstone to learn as much as you can about the person buried there. Do a work up on the person there, including a police artist's sketch, and leave it as an offering, in Harry's honor. No fair using a tombstone with a picture already on it. Show me.

Quote:
He had a long life, Maurice Pikar did. Started out as the Kid, like we all do, I suppose. I met him as the Killer, a long lifetime ago, but in Lucy's story he was the Banker. From a skinny Jewish kid from a Chicago dry-cleaner's shop to a man of wealth and taste.

I used to needle him about his name, Maurice. Sounded like a head waiter, to me. "Maurice, I'd like a table for two by the mess tent, please. Maurice, what wine would you recommend with this meal of sauerkraut and boiled potatoes?" Like that.

Maybe he was an evil man. I don't know. He certainly had more of an appetite for vengeance than anyone I ever knew, and that's a dangerous thing. But he was an old acquaintance, and if you live long enough, even old enemies seem as precious as new friends.

So do me a favor, would you? Find a tombstone for someone named Maurice. Use leaves, flowers or other small objects to spell his first name on the grave, and leave it as an offering. Then show me.

I did two and a half of them this week.

Amazingly, the first grave marker I looked at was someone who died on their birthday. What are the odds? ...roughly 1 in 365 I suppose...

I had a harder time after that. The cemetery I was at must have been founded in the 70's - no graves were older than that. Drove across town, and had similar results at cemetery #2, but this time the earliest were from the 60's.

Then, I noticed a set of three graves that were in odd positions relative to each other (picture attached). They were all the same family, and one was for a girl born in 1930, and who died in 1932. Once I stopped and thought about it, including why there'd be one grave from 1932 here and no others pre-60's, I was able to deduce a bit:

deductions wrote:
Born 1930, died 1932
Sister Mary Blair Clay, b. 1941 - Married Richard Clay, b.1941
Parents' names unknown, buried adjacent w/Mary
Religious family, judging by inscriptions on marker:
"In God's Loving Care"
"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep."
1930's - Depression Era. Parents were in a hard enough situation, after Betty's death waited for better times to have another child.
Despite never meeting her, Mary must have felt close to her sister. I say this because no other graves here date from the 30's. All are 60's + more recent. Betty's resting place was likely moved here upon Mary's death.

I never did find a grave of anybody named Maurice. But, my grandfather was named Maurice. I don't have a picture of his burial site, but reminisced a while about him (he was actually like the in-game Maurice in a few ways) in an e-mail to Lucky. I'm not expecting credit for it, but going through those old memories made my day. LCP rocks.

That's funny, most of the graves in the cemetery I went to either didn't have DOB or they only listed years and not dates, but the first one that had both DOB and DOD was also someone who died on their birthday.

I'm still waiting for someone to go to a cemetery at night, find a Maurice who died on his birthday, clean up his grave, spell out his name in leaves, draw his picture, and anagram his full name into a blessing and a curse -- all while wearing Vic's hat.

Anyone here who lives in St. Louis?

I'm flying in to town on Thursday (no, not for this, for a convention) but will have the entire afternoon off to explore the Bellefontaine Cemetery. Actually, I've done all the prelim work and know where we need to go throughout the (large) place.

PM me to set up meeting time! I figure we can do alot of small favors in this place.

I've got a really dumb question.

How are we supposed to take pictures of the hat going to all these places if we don't HAVE the hat? Question

Bad Detective

Tonight, I did a few hours of fun research online trying to find someone in a local cemetery who died before 1955 that had some history I could write up. In a small college town, that was pretty hard. Luckily the locals have put some useful info up and I was able to connect some dots.

In the end, I found out a lot about the early history of Starkville, MS and Mississippi State University. Tomorrow, I'll go grab the pics of my write up at the gravesite and I'll probably post it here too. It was an educational _and_ fun experience.

Also, I was able to find a Maurice and a birthday death... so I've got three visits to make tomorrow during my lunch hour.
