Tonight I discovered that, not only is there a cemetery two blocks away from my campus (since I'm entirely lacking in means of transportation, this made me excited), but it's also fairly famous. Grover Cleveland is buried there, for one. There's also a website with fascinating stories about some of the graves. I'm going to drag someone along and go visit as soon as I can.

How are we supposed to take pictures of the hat going to all these places if we don't HAVE the hat? Question

Please check the Hat Tour thread before PMing me "I have to have the hat". We are sending the hat around the world right now.

Sorry, not everyone is going to be able to do that smallfavor (kind of like only 1 person can do each of the specific cemetery favors). Not not logistically possible.

Well I thought I'd share -- still have to do the night pic and the 'fix-up' favors... and looks like the hat is as likely to happen as me making a wake. Razz

Cursing Kink
Lucky,
I have kids of my own and I know how I'd feel if someone killed one of them. I visited the dead today with my daughter to pay our respects and look for someone who would speak for your son.

Willie Pearl Boyd suggests that Kink is an ill oily rap dweeb and Alice Hogan hopes Kink comes back as a hog in lace. Honestly, I think they were overly polite. Perhaps, they were just nice folks in life.

Blessing Victor
Lucky,
During our trip to the cemetery, my daughter and I also looked for a tombstone that could provide a blessing for Victor. The first we saw was Bessie Gleen Thomas who offered up this sage omen - he is blest. It isn't much but at least she offers some assurance.

Irene T Childs also wanted to pass along to Victor that she felt he should be happy that his body is providing the earth with enriched silt.

Buck Gordon also offered words of encouragement: G! Rock on Bud!

I hope these encouraging words soothes both your and Victor's spirits.

Death on Birthday
Lucky,
It is a helluva thing to die on your birthday. But Sam is definitely not alone. Here in Starkville, MS, I found a 2-year-old boy, Burt Rand, who died long before Sam did. I've included a photo of his tombstone from Odd Fellows Cemetery.

The Banker
Lucky,
Well, I figured since Maurice Pikar was The Banker I'd leave a fitting tribute for him at Maurice Ware's tombstone at Odd Fellows Cemetery. Here's a shot of Maurice's marker with his name spelled out in pennies.

Bad Detective
Lucky,
I couldn't be a bad detective either. I found W.W. Scales in Odd Fellows Cemetery and did some fact finding about him and wrote up a short note about him. Its at the bottom of this letter. I really enjoyed getting to know Capt. Scales and I hope he has family today that remembers him - at least there's one more now that knows he's there. I'll try to visit him now that I know him. I've also attached a few pics showing where I left the note.

^Darn, you took my pennies idea (makes sense -- after all, maurice was The Banker).

I'm just waiting to see how long I'll stay at #1 in the Fellowship.

I did three of the favors tonight by visiting the cemetery where my papa and grandma are buried. I'm happy that this task brought me there when my everyday life doesn't. I feel like I should be ashamed that I used my own papa's name for this game, but somehow I feel like I honored him instead. I suppose that's strange, but its the way it is. I feel more at peace with death and loss today than I ever have. It's interesting that if you look at things just a little differnently, it really changes your perspective. Sorry for going all introspective here, I just had a nice evening and wanted to share Smile

Lucky,

Thanks for sending me to the graveyard. I went and visited the graves of my papa and grandma which I haven't done in far too long. I had a nice talk with them and told them all about my son who is almost one and a half. I was pleased to find out that my papa (Kyle O. James) had some harsh words for those who dare to murder others. He said that Kink Coover is a "Measly Joke". I tend to agree.

Lucky,

At the graveyard today I happened to see a person whose name is great blessing for Victor. His pictures and documentaries tell a story without words. His work lives on in as a kind of "Lyric Novel" of pictures instead of words, but just as powerful. Cyril L. Evon helped me see this.

Lucky,

My husband, son and I went to the graveyard this evening to pay our respects. We needed to use a flashlight to see Cornelius D. Young. I think he appreciated the visit. I hope it's alright that I only have a picture of Cornelius and not one of myself with him. The flash on my camera started malfunctioning after I took this picture.

Evergreen Cemetery Recap:

As rose said, it took us awhile to get to this task since it rained hard for about 9 straight days. Anyway, Evergreen Cemetery is truly enormous. Luckily, all 7 of the gravesites were in one relatively small area, and it still took us about 2 hours to find them all. Thank goodness rose brought a compass, it would've been impossible without it.

I'll spoiler it just in case:

Quote:
#1 Stroll in from the Bushwick Ave. entrance and go about 250 yards, looking to your left. You'll come to a beautiful woman leaning on an anchor. Who of the four J's here lived longest? Take note of the year that person died.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Janie, 1909. The picture I took doesn't show the last name, and I can't remember it. There was James, Janie, Jessie and John, Janie lived the longest. This one took a little while, we were looking at the wrong angle, the anchor wasn't very prominent.

Quote:
#2 Now head to your NE (be sure of your directions). As the crow flies, you'll be going about fifteen yards, but then again you're not a crow. Look for the angel and the ocean. Find the stringed instrument and take note of the year of death.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Viola Lauret Wenz, 1914. Viola, get it? "As the crow flies" was a hint that you had to walk around buildings, there were a number of above ground little grave building thingies (are those "mausoleums"? I need to get hip to the cemetery lingo) in that area. It was actually much closer than we thought. Very nice tombstone.

Quote:
#3 Now, heading back almost due west, you'll come upon a mausoleum with a feature befitting Ebenezer Scrooge. See if anyone's home, then look down to your left for the year in the stone. Take note of it.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
William F. Neu, 1936. This is where we almost got completely off track. "Ebenezer Scrooge" indicated a heavy door knocker, and the first one we found was way down the road, but the directions to the next site didn't make any sense from there, so we had to backtrack, and eventually found it, it ended up being almost directly behind site #1 (you can actually see it in the picture I took of site #1)

Quote:
#4 Now, head back to the path, and turn SW. Turn NW at your first chance, then keep your eyes peeled for a lovely weathered angel atop an ornate base. This is the Christoffel family. One of them was a Sergeant in the 304 th Field Artillery. Good guy. Take note of the year he joined his dearly departed family.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
John E. Christoffel, 1950. This one was pretty easy, it was right next to the path.

Quote:
#5 Next, head NE until you reach the last, northeastern row of The Lawn. About 65 yards from the Christoffels, you'll find one who is always in trouble with the Lord. Note the year he left this earth.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
George Sinning, 1965. Get it, Sinning? This one took the longest. We couldn't find any names matching the clue "in trouble with the Lord", thinking it was some obscure name from the Bible. We saw some German names and thought maybe they translated into something. I was getting pretty frustrated when I looked up, and there it was.

Quote:
#6 Three stones away marks the place where the red ferns died. What year did the youngest shoot go?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Samuel Redfern Jr., 1892. This was the easiest one, only a few steps from Sinning.

Quote:
# It's time to head SE back to the road. Once there, go NNE for just 50 yards or so, until you meet some more of my kin (another white sheep in the family). Find the year he went to his doubtless just reward.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Rufus Andrew Brown, 1932. We figured right away it was a Brown, but it took some times since they had us walk back to the path, then back again, and it ended up being pretty close to #6.

Quote:
SHOW ME you and any friends with the Angel and the Ocean.

Quote:
TELL ME the first of the 7 to die.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Samuel Redfern Jr., 1892. Poor little guy was only 3.

Rest of (crappy camera phone) pics here: http://www.argfestnyc.com/gallery/LCP-Evergreen-Cemetery

My favorite pic of the day: Muck. Which, coincidentally (wait a minute! there ARE NO COINCIDENCES in ARGs!!!), was directly across from site #7.

I wouldn't call it a "fun" day, since cemeteries tend to give me the willies a little bit, but it was definitely an experience Very Happy See you all on 11/5 in NYC!

Finally got around to doing some small favors. Hungarian national graveyards are pretty impressive. I wonder how Lucky will like my tribute to tranny lovin' Vic: Anal Rat Hunk. I guess someone might like that nickname.

See ya at the tables

ps. Royal Flush yesterday, only made $4k but it was incredible! W00t

evergreen

I know bagsbee didn't enjoy it, but I had fun at the graveyard.

Another great thing about ARGs - they take you places you wouldn't normally go. I stopped "dead" in my tracks when I recognized the Tiffany stained glass windows in many of the mausoleums. I was momentarily speechless and astonished.

And then the ones that had doorknockers on them. I mean why doorknockers on a mausoleum? I had fun saying "Scrooge" in a dead Jacob Marley ghost voice at the one with the lion's head shaped doorknocker. And there was one with a wrought iron bench inside the doors, like you would find on the front porch in the summer time. ( ok, I will continue this META discussion on my too-long dormant blog and spare the board. Smile )

After that I was pretty much useless at finding anything. I was so distracted by all the architectural elements, I kept losing focus on our task.

Bagsbee is a very patient man. Smile

I have a quick question for those who have submitted favors before. How quickly did you get a response/credit? I submitted mine yesterday and haven't heard anything so I was just curious if it was the experience of others that it took awhile.

The first week mine were approved pretty quick - a few hours maybe?

This week took a day or two.

I didn't say I didn't enjoy it, just that it wasn't necessarily fun. Hell, I enjoyed Schindler's List, but I wasn't exactly dancing a jig afterwards.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat Very Happy
