They're using some unusual server software...

seems like a pretty good choice of software to me. It can throttle connections to the pages that we, the already recruited, are likely to visit, and hence ensure that the main page is always available. Nice piece of software actually.

Here's what their site has to say:
Quote:
Throttling is implemented by checking each incoming URL filename against all of the patterns in the throttle file. The server accumulates statistics on how much bandwidth each pattern has accounted for recently (via a rolling average). If a URL matches a pattern that has been exceeding its specified limit, then the data returned is actually slowed down, with pauses between each block. If that's not possible (e.g. for CGI programs) or if the bandwidth has gotten way larger than the limit, then the server returns a special code saying 'try again later'.

The minimum rates are implemented similarly. If too many people are trying to fetch something at the same time, throttling may slow down each connection so much that it's not really useable. Furthermore, all those slow connections clog up the server, using up file handles and connection slots. Setting a minimum rate says that past a certain point you should not even bother - the server returns the 'try again later" code and the connection isn't even started.

I'm now getting the original page with no leaderboard or page to login to solve a card.

Indeedy. I'd just never heard of it, that's all.

There must have been a lot of people trying to access the site over the past 24 hours.

Another tech point: anyone else spotted that all the solve pages are served securely? Nice work!

Just one question, is there anyone that isn't going to enter their solves so that they can keep the foil strip on?

I've been considering it... Since there's no chance I'll get very high on the leaderboard anyway.

On the other hand, based on past announcements from MC, I suspect eventually having a solve logged for a card is gonna be useful for more that just points (like access to different stuff on the site perhaps). If that happens I'll definitely start entering solves Smile

Of course I'll probably break down and enter them anyway. I started to the first day but the site went down and when it came back up my hopes of sneaking into the top 3 for a few minutes for a screen grab were dashed Smile

There's always photoshop....

seems it was down for a bit today because they updated it even more. now you can see which cards you successfully answered correctly, how many times you attempted answers, and your last 5 failed attempts. fun fun!

Is anyone else still having problems signing in to enter solves. The site keeps telling me "You asked to see a page which we can't show you unless you sign in first. Sign in by typing your screen name and password in below."

Is this happening to anyone else or is it just me!!! Mad

Frankly I didn't think the leaderboard would be very interesting, but last night there was some action.

I was working into the wee hours entering all the solves I had. I figured it was my only chance to get on the leaderboard because soon everyone with better cards will enter their solutions I'll be down in the hundreds somewhere... (16 packs and still no silvers...not that I'm bitter or anything Smile )

Anyway BrianEnigma must have been entering solutions at the same time, because each time I'd enter one and move up on the list I'd see him moving up too, always quite a few notches ahead. Then at one point Brian had 1399, two points lower than walther who was in the top spot with 1401.

For a long time after that I'd add a solution, check the board and Brian was still at 1399. It looked like he'd been stopped a couple points short of the lead. Then, perhaps an hour later, I saw Brian finally grab the top spot. Presumably, just when all hope was lost, he drew upon some puzzle-solving reserves to score a big solution just seconds before the buzzer.

It was almost like watching a PCAG Tournament on ESPN 8 ("The Ocho"), or something. Anyway, it was more entertaining than I'd expected.

P.S. I topped out at 7th. Now begins my slow descent into oblivion Smile

Is anyone having any problems entering their solves-I just added a balck card, it said I had the right answer then failed to give me the points nor would it let me put the code back in, saying that I had solved it. There we no time delays with a red card I solved so I assume it's nothing to do with that.

EDIT: Surely this is proof that making assumptions makes an ass out of you and me...clever that.

There seems to be a bug with the "failed attempts" in that having made a mess of entering a solve yesterday 3 times (and being locked out), it's now telling me I failed on three different cards - which I know I got right first time!

Strange...

Ploughed through my cards last night.

Some things that happened:

Twice, when I entered the correct answer and clicked on the link to get back to my homepage, it came up with an error page with a code to note down. It did seem to register the solve, though.

Sometimes when I exceeded my tries for a solution, trying again just resulted in a blank white page.

There is one set of four in the cards I have (137-140, IIRC), and it duly awarded me the bonus for getting them all when I entered the fourth.

Oddly, when I look at my profile, the 'your leaderboard' section is out of date. Maybe it needs refreshing but I'm not going to try because it still shows me at no. 1!

If it is three tries a 'day', when does a day run - is it a fixed time or is it in any period of 24 hours? E.g. if you enter attempts at 5 p.m. 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. will you get another go at 5 p.m. the next day and then another at 7 p.m., or will you get three more goes at some particular time, or what?
