Cracking stop-polarneft.com

I've been doing a little digging on the stop-polarneft site, and here's what I've been able to determine.

It's actually a clever little puzzle, apparently set up by Boris Atlasov to ensure that only Arkady Simkin could gain access to the hidden, password-protected directory. I won't spoil the fun by giving it away, but a few of you have already figured it out. The one clue I will offer is that just because you can't see text on a webpage, doesn't mean there isn't any.

Out of character?

So it appears our 'confederate' from Giantology.net is not taking Simkin's alleged disappearance TOO seriously...

A man in hiding (assuming we're in character still), and a friend who's trying to be protectively elusive is something that is 'fun' and which is not meant to be 'spoiled'.

Wink

It's all good. We have our Russian interpreters working on that message 24/7 Arkady, we WILL dig out the password and nab that 3D Seismic image, and/or a $10 coupon off of Shadow of the Colossus. Razz

all the posts as of December 8th are missing. eric belson actually wrote something basically everyday since the 12th. now they are all missing. Basically the last 3 days reveal more and more clues. (password hints, etc). I emailed him, thanking him advance for a copy of the game, after pointing out how he was a little sloppy in posing as a "giantologist". notice how his posts were now listed under the "games" category? if this was really a mystery why would he include a keyword indicating that his post was for a video game.

the password is "polaricegiant" (no spaces)

you guys misheard the message. when u type it in, u get access to three files:

1) a cave drawing of Taurus Major (much like the peruvian one)

2) a document from 1985, which is a letter to a certain government department in which funding was granted for research. it basically asks why funding was cut off after their own independent discovery was made (remember i said that this other group found it in 1985). many names have been blacked out & the bottom of the letter is torn.

3) a video that shows 3d imagery of taurus major at the north pole. doesn't look real though.

check them out on your own. you'll see what i'm talking about.

conclusion: none of these files appear to have any credibility. the letter looks fake & if they really wanted to expose people, they would have kept the names on the document (unless he found it like that which would be pretty hard to believe). the cave drawing is too similar to the Nazca cave drawing of the peruvian giant. and if the drawing was found in peru, it would seem far-fetched for taurus major to eventually settle in the north pole. that's quite a distance for any creature of any size considering the drastic climate change it would have to endure. the video looks like it was a 3d cgi object that was created by a grapics designer.

lastly, the giantology blog is now missing it's posts from the past 7 days. another try to pique our curiosity? most likely, as too many people are figuring it out already. sony may be trying to drag it out just a little longer for the holiday season. my guess is that by around xmas, he'll let the cat out of the bag and come clean about this whole viral campaign.

I vist another Typepad blog, and the same thing happened there.

all the typepad blogs are down

I read a number of Typepad blogs and the same thing is going on right now. Their down for "servce problems". It could be some other clue or mystery but it could also be just that. Go to the main Typepad page http://www.typepad.com and check it out.

Great thread BTW --- you roped me into signing up for the forusm!!

Yeah, this is starting to develop. Notice the bottom of the Memo is ripped off. This may hold some type of key info. And if we can get a version without the names backed out, it might hole some important information. The cave painting is intresting too, it is similar to the Peru giant's cave painting, which, of course, poses a connection between the two. As for the 3D go around, well, that proves it's the second Colossus if there was ever any doubt.

Ten days until a probable event. If at all possible, be online the day after Christmas, or you'll miss something.

a little strange that most posts from around the 11th to the 12th have been removed while the rest of all the submissions are still there. doesn't seem to make sense that they would lose information from 5 or 6 days ago. i mean it just seems too coincidental.

all of belson's recent posts clue you into the secrets of the website. the last post basically revealed the entire purpose. i wish i had saved the post from the 15th now. belson started to use white (invisible) text in his final post and promised that he'll fill us in on everything very soon. including the files in the directory.

by chance, do u think that somebody (sony perhaps) ordered the typepad guys to remove all of Belson's posts that range from the 12th and on? and while in the process of doing so, they inadvertently removed the posts from the global community?

sony: so did u do it? did u erase his (Belson's) posts?
webmaster: yeah i think so.. wait a second.. oops i erased all of them instead of just that one account
sony: great now more people will be suspicious and the surprise will get exposed 6 days before it was supposed to.

likely? more likely than this whole thing being real. but this (proving sony did it all) has become part of the game for me now.

You're looking way to far into this. It was just a technical error, nothing more.

And seriously, it's not moving fater than it was supposed to. Otherwise, Sony would just stop posting for a few days to catch up to where they should be.

dammit!

I leave for like 5 days, and the giantology guy offers a free copy of Colossus for something we already figured out!!!

*stomps around like a baby*

Anyways...

I don't know if i'm looking into it too much...

but I went on the site that had the three files...

Here's my ideas tossed into the ring:

1. File size between the video and the image IDENTICAL?
'zat a coincidence or should we be paying attention?

2. Typos in the letter. Missing letters like 'O' in Global, and 'Y' in Discovery, I casually found while reading it. Maybe there's enough to spell something of importance.

3. The Cave Painting. I hate admitting it, but Neopets used to do really clever ARG puzzles like random Jpegs that required you to use MSpaint to fill in parts of the picture to reveal hidden clues.

Hopefully, we don't have to sit around and wait for the 'confederate' at Sony to keep pulling us around by the nosehair.
