[META] Austin Game Confererence has a talk about LCP and ILB

Out of curiosity...Anyone happens to be attending the Austin Game Confererence this week?

Below is quoted from

Alternate Reality Gaming: Experimental Social Structures for MMOs
Benevolent conspiracies? Grooming networks? Folksonomy mobs? These are just some of the experimental social structures emerging in the space of alternate reality games (ARGs). Find out how ARGs -- reality-fueled, collaborative MMOs -- offer new ways of organizing the social experiences and relationships of their players. What's uniquely fun about these experimental social structures? What kinds of innovative MMO gameplay do they support? Explore the design philosophy and social network theory behind ARGs, and get a close up look at how players of major alternate reality games like I Love Bees and Last Call Poker are redefining community in the MMO space. Come prepared to spend an hour thinking playfully about some very strange and very cool possibilities for the future design of MMO communities.

I'll be there in an official ARGN staff writer capacity. Maureen McHugh is also speaking tomorrow afternoon in the Game Writer Conference portion of the event. Smile

I'll write up another article after Jane's talk tomorrow.

In a full-time capacity? You can look at their website and check out their people/staff pages.

On a contract basis? I suppose that would depend on the project. Smile

addie

Thank you for covering the conference and posting such an excellent write up.

This sounds promising:

Quote:
All in all this was a very engaging study of the theory that drives ARGs. The audience members really looked like they were "getting it", and hopefully we will see people involved in both playing and making future games.

As does this:
Quote:
And to finish with one last interesting quote - an audience member asked what happens when the game goes beyond the players - i.e., what if you give 42 Entertainment your phone number, and they end up calling and talking to your grandmother? Elan Lee once said, "If I could send electric shocks through the phone, I would." He wants no-holds-barred, mind-blowing immersion. Maureen talked about future technologies with a gleam in her eye, saying that some day Elan wants to appear on the heads-up display of your vehicle as you drive

Bring it on Elan. Wink

If you look on that page, there are outlines of peoples' heads - roll over them to find the other employees. It's not the most intuitive page in the world.

I'm writing up the 4orty2wo talks as well as the other stuff I attended. I was fortunate enough to fly over on a scholarship to attend the conference Smile

I noticed several hands going up when Maureen asked who had played the Beast and ILB, and I wondered who else was there! I was the girl with pink hair. Unfortunately I missed the end of Jane's talk, and the Thumb Wrestling, due to a previous commitment Sad

I was pretty excited when Jane showed one of my posts though, the people I was with couldn't believe it. Oh, and the Wikipedia article I helped edit. Gosh, isn't feeling almost-famous fun?

I'll post a link in this thread when I've written up my account of the talks, but the links already posted cover them well Smile
