[LIVE EVENT]Kansas City Photos and Story

Hey guys! First off, I'd like to extend a HUGE thank you to everyone that came out to Elmwood cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 29th to help out with the Graveyard Games. We really could not have done all of this without you. Teamwork always gets the job done. So without further ado, let's get on with how things went down...

TOMBSTONE HOLD'EM TOURNEY

Things started off benign enough as myself and Supercat1 headed to the place to start playing Hold'Em after meeting Jane and getting the day's program from her.

Pics of the program:

Right after we got an introduction into the history of the cemetery from the caretaker of the facility, I received a call from my contact on here, Shad0 (again, much props...you helped out a bunch). Once we started playing, it was really back-and-forth for a few hands, as we would win one hand here, and someone else would win another. So it kept going. However, there were a few teams that were not having great luck, so thankfully they decided to split off and play two hands of all-in Hold'Em, so knowing that we had a decent chip lead, we knew that if we won the all-in game, we'd have no trouble whatsoever winning the event.

Here's what the all-in table looked like:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57617371/in/set-1247722/

Luckily for Supercat1 and I, we got dealt a good hand, and we managed to find an unbeatable pocket hand, so we won the hand, and easily won the tournament with a huge stack of 134 chips.

Here are some photos of us with the chips, and a few of the prizes for winning the tourney:

LUCKY'S SPECIAL FAVOR

So after we triumphantly smacked everyone in Tombstone Hold'Em (hey, we can gloat a bit, right?), Jane told us that if we had anyone to contact, that now was the time to do it, so I called Shad0 back, and he gave us the instructions to start the hunt. Now I'm not 100% certain about what exactly the clue was, but I do remember that we needed to find a Rising Sun somewhere between where the tourney ended and the chapel at the graveyard. After searching for about 5 minutes, we found it, and discovered a holster with instructions in it behind part of the grave itself.

Pics of me and the KC crew ready to begin following Lucky's instructions and one of the holster:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57628915/in/set-1247722/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57617378/in/set-1247722/

So at this point, we had the instructions in hand.

Here are pages 1 & 2:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57622301/in/set-1247722/

Now since I know not everyone's eyes are 20/20, and more than likely, the pictures are just a bit blurry, I'll post a transcript of what the instructions say as we go in Italics.

I'm going to take you on a little journey through the Historic Elmwood Cemetery. I want you to think about the people here. About the stories they left behind. So each stop along the way, study the stones and pay your respects. Do it as a group, and be creative.

Make sure the winning team of the Tombstone Hold 'Em tournament goes with you on the entire journey. You'll need their luck and tombstone know-how to get you through your mission. (End of pg. 1)

At the last stop, do me the final favor I ask. Get it right and I'll send you a sign.

Oh yeah---after you've completed your mission, and before you leave the cemetery, I'll introduce you to one more person. Someone who is the key to getting the next chapter of our story started. You'll want to write down that very last name so you can pass it to your friends later tonight.

Time to start. (end of pg. 2)

Alright. Now here is where the instructions actually start, with pics.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57622302/in/set-1247722/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57622303/in/set-1247722/

And now, here comes the walkthrough of our journey to fulfill Lucky's wish.

Instructions

1 - In the cemetery block southwest of where you are now, you will find the tallest stone in the whole yard. Go there now. You'll know you're in the right place because you'll find a house at its feet.

This one was pretty easy to spot. It literally was THE biggest grave in the entire yard, and it had a tombstone of someone who had the last name "House" right at its base. We hurried over to the grave, and one of us (I never got your name, sorry! I'm a horrible person!) took the time to pose for a very nice pic.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57625921/in/set-1247722/

So after we got to the grave and paid our respects, we read the next step:

2 - How old was the son of JJ & M when he died? Head this many paces further southwest to the pointing stone.

Well, JJ and M were the initials of the parents of Albrect, the name on the large grave, and their son was 11 when he died. Here's a pic:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57621163/in/set-1247722/

Thus, we headed 11 paces SW, and it didn't take too much to find the pointing stone either, as it was fairly obvious as well.
Pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57628904/in/set-1247722/

So now we looked to Lucky for the next instructions:

3 - Now follow the direction of the pointing stone to the nearby school of fish swimming underfoot.

This one took a few minutes to find, as we weren't exactly sure what to look for. A few people suggested that it might have been fish on someone's grave, or fish that would be underneath someone's grave whose name was "Foot". Plus we weren't exactly sure how far or how close the fish were supposed to be. When we actually found the fish, we all had a pretty good laugh.

Pics of the "Fish":
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57621152/in/set-1247722/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57621155/in/set-1247722/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57621156/in/set-1247722/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57621158/in/set-1247722/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57621159/in/set-1247722/

Now at this point, we all gathered around the school of "Fish" and we said a few words to pay our respects to them. Then we looked to see what Lucky had in store for us next:

4 - Count the number of fish and head five times as many paces southwest to the headless son.

So since there were 5 "Fish", we headed 25 paces SW, until we say a grave that really did have a headless son on top of it. Here are some pics of the grave, and the KC crew around it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57617376/in/set-1247722/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57617373/in/set-1247722/

So once again, having found the correct tomb and having paid our respects, we looked to Lucky for our path:

5 - How old was the son when he died? Go down the nearby steps to the path and head seven times as many paces in the direction of a leaning cross.

At this point, we looked on the back of the grave for the headless son's name and lifespan, which we found:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57617377/in/set-1247722/

Since the headless son was only 7 years old when he died, we headed 49 paces towards the direction of a leaning cross that we saw in the distance here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57623501/in/set-1247722/

Once we got close to the leaning cross, we consulted Lucky again:

6 - Near the leaning cross you'll spot an open mausoleum on the left side of the road. Go inside.

Ack. Going inside a mausoleum? That got a few of us spooked just a bit, but not enough to keep us from discovering what Lucky had in store for us, thankfully. Oh yeah, and here's a pic of everyone and the mausoleum:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57617375/in/set-1247722/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57622300/in/set-1247722/

Since we had made it to the mausoleum, I read the next instructions from Lucky:

7 - How old was the member of this family who had lived the longest when he or she died? Go this many paces northeast.

At that point, we did some math and I tried to just listen in on what everyone was saying inside the mausoleum, and we eventually found the oldest member of the family buried there:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57623503/in/set-1247722/

Well, John Fritz managed to live to the ripe old age of 79, so we headed off 79 paces to the NE. Once there, I checked Lucky's instructions again to make sure we were still on the right track.

8 - Nearby where you now stand is a children's and infant's section. Find the baby "diamond" grave of a John Jr. who might have been a relative of mine.

Well this one took us a few minutes again. We had miscounted the paces we took from the mausoleum, and as a result, we didn't see any children or infant graves around where we were, so we decided to spread out and tried to cover more ground. Thankfully, we did find the infant section without too much trouble, and since we remembered that Lucky's last name is indeed "Brown" we knew we had found the right grave when we found this:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57628909/in/set-1247722/

Since we had found the correct tombstone, it was up to Lucky to let us know what we needed to do next.

9 - How many days did John Jr. live? Go this many paces north.

Now we knew from the grave that poor John Jr. only lived to be a little over 50 days old, we headed about 55 paces north to our hopeful next desitination. We knew we were getting close to the end at this point, and even Shad0 was amazed at how fast we were doing all of this. When he said that, I immediately checked my cellphone to see how long we had been at it, and we had already been searching the graveyard for 50 minutes! But nevertheless, we looked to Lucky for the next part of our quest:

10 - From the crossroads where you now find yourself, scan the horizon for a tall skinny stone supported by three stacked blocks. Head to it.

Now here's where things started getting a bit dicey. We saw at least 10 or 12 very tall, skinny stone which we thought were supported by three blocks. Pics:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57625895/in/set-1247722/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57625898/in/set-1247722/

We thought we had found the correct grave, so we decided to read the next step in the instructions from Lucky:

11 - Very close to where you now stand is the man who loved poker best out of anyone ever buried in Elmwood. You'll know you've found the right grave because he's going to show you his best 5-card hand.

Right away, we figured it would probably be someone that had a royal flush, or a full house or some poker hand on his tombstone. We also had theories that it might be someone's name, like Royal Flush, or it could be a set of tombstones, that would equal a royal flush in Tombstone Hold 'Em. We were looking around for about 15 minutes, but we simply couldn't find anything. I was desperately trying to get help from Shad0 and everyone he was talking to online.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57622305/in/set-1247722/

Eventually we pretty much just decided that we had gotten the last step incorrect, and we decided to head back to the crossroads and look for another tall, skinny stone supported by three blocks. And then we all smacked our foreheads collectively when we saw the correct tombstone we were looking for:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57630531/in/set-1247722/

Since we figured we had now found the correct grave, we frantically started looking for the man with the best 5-card hand on his grave, and the search didn't last long. Right next to the supported grave, we found this:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57628911/in/set-1247722/

At this point, we were all ecstatic, but we knew we weren't quite done yet. I consulted Lucky again...

This man deserves a special favor from Tombstone Hold 'Em player like yourselves. Leave a temporary offering of at least 150 chips, join hands around his grave, and pay your respects to complete this task.

When you're done, huddle together as close as you can to the old poker player, and I'll try to send you a signal. Your friends will help you find the sweet spot for my final message to you today.

At that point, we placed all of our winning chips, along with Supersox's chips on Ronnie's grave, and we paid our respects with a moment of silence for him.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57623502/in/set-1247722/

Then we all huddled together to listen to Lucky's signal with our three AM/FM radios that we had there. It took us three tries to finally get a decent reception, but once we did the message was very clear. It told of the next time period, the Mexican War, WWI, and German spies in America in 1914. The message told of a 2-gun Hart, and Juarez Pancho. And the GUN showing up at a poker game. That's all we got there, but it seemed like a very cool time period to jump to.

Then I noticed one last thing on the instructions that Lucky gave us.

Oh, and one more thing...

LAST CALL

Before you leave the cemetery, there's one more person you have to meet. Someone whose name holds the key to unlocking the first of eight cards in the next chapter of our little story.

Head to the cemetery block due south of where you now stand. If you look very closely in the westernmost row of this block, you'll spot a memorial marker for organ donors. Directly behind this memorial lies a woman by the name of Helen Andrews. What was her husband's last name? Pass this name on to your friends later tonight. It will get them started on their next hand.

And remember to give your Tombstone Hold 'Em host your Last Call Poker names on your way out, so I can know exactly who helped me out today.

Wow. We were almost done. We headed south, and we found the memorial to all of the organ donors (the pic didn't want to turn out well for some reason), and then right next to it there was indeed a grave for a Helen Andrews.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79676274@N00/57625902/in/set-1247722/

As you can see, her husband's last name was Patton. As soon as I gave this name to Shad0, he told me that the website had updated, and new cards had been put up on the site. So that was it, and for the day we were all done. It was a very intense and extremely fun experience that I had a blast with. I would love to do this again sometime. I have to say, so far, this has been a blast participating in LCP, and I can't wait to see where the rest of the rabbit hole leads to...

-Jack
