[OT] Every Story of American Violence is a Western

With that quote in mind, just for fun, we were trying to match up the Matrix characters with Lucky's eight archetypes in #lastcall this morning.

Lucky wrote:
The Banker and the Sheriff, the Killer and the Kid. The Gambler, the Preacher, the Half-breed and the Drunk.

Neo, we figured, was the Kid.

Morpheus could be the Gambler, or the Preacher. Or, possibly, the Oracle is the Preacher.

Smith is the Sheriff (along with the rest of the Agents and the Matrix structure) in the first movie, but becomes the Killer in the second and third movies. But he could possibly be the Half-Breed, since he's sort of half Agent and half something else in the second and third movies.

I think that's as far as we got.

Anyone want to play? Smile

Oooh... nice catch on Tank as the half-breed, Ariock!

I would also say that the drunk would be the dude who sold himself back in the matrix for the steak dinner, etc...

I know he wasn't a drunk in the alcohol sense, but he was drunk on "easy, fake life". So, perhaps this would work. And it's been a while since I've watched the Matrix, so I'm sorry I forgot his name...

Cypher was the guy who was brewing his own nasty alcohol, and liked to eat extra-rare steak in the Matrix.

Mouse is an *excellent* choice for the Kid, but there's also The Kid, so ...

I still pick Mouse, though. Although, in a funny twist of a way, Mouse is also a contender for Banker. (He's got the goods on the Matrix)

I would make Trinity the Killer and Cypher the Drunk.

I'm temted to switch Oracle and Morpheus...

But otherwise I agree with this.

Do you need a hug or a couple ounces of pepto? My stomach is also a little twisty, but that would be from the alcohol last night. Wink

I like Cypher as drunk...I am not completely happy with Trinity as killer...but I think she is the best choice...plus, she needs to be on the list somewhere.

I have a better idea for the Banker.

But first, the Preacher....Morpheus has to be the preacher to me. He is the true believer. He literally preaches the one to all of the converts on the Nebuchadnezzar.

Which brings me to the Banker. I vote that the banker is actually the hovercraft Nebuchadnezzar. It (the computer systems onboard) gives its people in the Matrix the knowledge and arms that they need. What do you think?

I think that's why I was thinking of Mouse for Banker: he can manipulate and create currency in the system - from backdoors to women in red dresses ...

Huh, how about Morpheus as the Gambler, and *Neo* as the Preacher?

I could see the Oracle as the Half-Breed, although I think, definitely, the more poignant choice is Smith.

Hmm, they're both poignant.

hm....I don't see any of these.

I think a preacher has to believe, and Neo doesn't believe until the very end.

And I don't see how the Oracle or Smith could be the half-breed...unless you mean in the later movies?

What about Trinity as the Gambler? She consistently risks all for and because of Neo.

Morpheus has got the Preacher thing going, since he believes in Neo without question, even when all signs point to the contrary. Trinity, on the other hand, just seems to be going on pure gut instinct and betting on him being The One.

Copied and Pasted from another thread (that went unanswered at the time)

Kid - Neo at first (straight from Lucky's mouth) - or later, the character "The Kid" who makes an appearance in the Animatrix and the sequels
Preacher - The Oracle
Gambler - Morpheus, took a "gamble" on Neo on blind faith
Sheriff - Agent Smith
Killer - Cypher
Drunk - Persephone, addicted to human emotions
Banker - Merovingian
Halfbreed - Neo, bridges the gap between humanity and the matrix

Naw, Neo isn't the Preacher. He may be the focus of preaching, but he himself doesn't ever preach. Preacher = Morpheus, totally. The Oracle is the gambler - she gambles with the fate of, ah, just about everyone, with her messing about with the One. Morpheus never thinks he's gambling, he has complete faith in his beliefs.

I'd go with:

Kid = Neo
Preacher = Morpheus
Gambler = Oracle
Sheriff = Lock, trying to keep everyone in line and following orders
Killer = Smith
Drunk = Cypher
Banker = Merovingian (he trafficks in information)
Halfbreed = Sati, the little girl from Revolutions who, while a program, was "born" from the unmachinelike love of her "parents"

While I do like Smith as the Half-Breed, I think he works better as crazy insane killer man. Also, um, I just really like Sati.
