Thanks for the birthday wishes!!

I talked to the cemetery- we need to take the J train to the Cypress Hills Street stop.

I am going to find out the age restrictions from the bar.

Now -we need a good place to meet in Manhattan to travel.

One idea: we could meet near 14th Street union station. The J train stops there.

We could even have a quick lunch near the 14th street station first.

The train will take about 45 minutes from Manhattan. So when do we want to leave the city?

I would like to get there early enough to get an understanding of the layout of the cemetery and to look for jokers.

He suggests the easiest way to get there may be to take the E or the F all the way to Jamaica and then come back on the J train to Forrest Parkway.

This seems very inefficient to me, and I think he only suggested that way because he thought i would be less likely to get lost and because the E and the F are better trains than the J.

It seems rather non-intuitive, but it makes sense. The E/F runs express in Queens, so it may actually be faster, depending on where you're coming from. If you're coming from Port Authority or Penn Station, I'd say take the E to the J, if you're near Union Square, take the L to the J (this is starting to sound like a hip-hop song). And he's right, the J train sucks, thankfully we won't be on it for long.

If we're going to meet up beforehand and go as a group, I'd recommend doing this at one of two places:

  • Citicorp Building, 53rd St & Lexington Ave. There's a small plaza across the street with seating, next to the entrance to the subways. We can take the E train from here (The 6/F/V trains also stop here)
  • Union Square, 14th St & Broadway, in front of the Virgin Megastore. We can take the L train from here. (It's a major hub, the N/R/W/Q/4/5/6/L trains all stop here)

I live in Queens so it would certainly be easier for me to take the E rather than go through Manhattan....but I defer to the crowd, besides, half the fun is the journey, blah, blah and all that. Of course, NYC Transit is known to make last-minute service changes (especially on weekends), so all of this might change Very Happy

If you wanna trek it on your own...I'm pretty good with subways, so if you want to know the optimal route from where you are or will be, contact me.

As far as food...I'm probably going to find a deli somewhere and brown bag it. Cheap & easy.

Rose: Happy belated birthday.

I gave Ikk my phone number. I'll shoot you a PM with it as well, if you want. Perhaps it will help with the meeting up.

I'm such a dork...happy belated, rose Very Happy Pony?! Pony?! Pony?!

There's a number of notables interred at Cypress Hills, including Mae West, Eubie Blake, Piet Mondrian, and Gloria Foster (The Oracle from the Matrix movies), as well as Jackie Robinson, whose number was retired permanently across all of Major League Baseball. His number? 42. Shocked

Oh, and don't forget to bring a flower. I'll probably bring a few extras, but don't count on it.

Since I am terrible at navigating the NYC Subway system, I decided to ask my good friend, Internet, for assistance.

"Internet," I said, "please help me be less dumb about the subway."
Internet looked at me with eyes of purest pity and said "Go here."
"Thank you, Internet!"

NYC

that's it. I cancelled two things I had set up for this weekend because I, um, have to go to a memorial service for a friend's friend. When is everyone going to be here and where should we try to meet? Smile

wooo! I'm getting quite excited to see everyone!

Here's what I know about what's going on...

Gup, Scrappy, & I are staying near Lexington & 51st.

I get in super early on Friday but won't be free until early afternoon. Scrappy & Gup will be getting in mid-late afternoon. Depending on when I get settled, I'll either do a bit of sightseeing or take a nap while I anxiously await their arrival.

I'd love to go someplace cool for dinner and then see where the night takes me/us on Friday.

Saturday AM depends on the recovery time from the previous night. Maybe being a good tourist and heading over towards the Rockefeller Center, maybe sleeping in, maybe going out for breakfast... who knows. Then it's meeting up with everyone to head over to the cemetery. After talking to a few people, it seems as if the best alternative is to meet up across from the Chrysler Building... around, say, 11-11:30ish. From there it's all up in the air and I really have no clue what's going on. I'm up for just about anything!

Sunday, my flight leaves around 3... so really, it's gonna be breakfast and packing up/saying goodbye and then heading out to the airport.

Anyone up for Friday night festivities? Do the locals have any good suggestions?

I'm ten miles down Route 3, over in New Jersey. I could be in the city in half an hour or so. Plan for me is to get in around 10 or 11 Saturday morning, meet someone who knows how to get there.

Also, I'd be down for Friday night partyin' as well... after work, that is.

NY -whatever you want

I can do something on Friday afternoon/evening as well.

Bars near you: Divine Bar - on East 51st or west 54th and I like Ruby Foo's for a group get together -- but joebrent laughed at me when I suggested it. It is a fun place to order and share different food. Chippy and I went to the one on the Upper West side, get his opinion.

If you want to see Rockefeller Center/St. Patrick's and 5th Avenue I would suggest doing that on Friday as Saturday will be much more crowded.

But very special news:

They just reopened
roof for viewing at Rockefeller Center , just yesterday.

You can buy tickets online at that site, or by phone.
I got to go for a sneak preview with a friend who works there and the view is spectacular. I would highly recommend trying to see it.

(As an alternative, for Friday afternoon my favorite place to take ARG people seems to be the Met Museum - next NYC get together I need to move onto the Guggenheim or MOMA. But I know the easy access entrance and that you can get in for $1.00 even if they asked for $15. Also, I know the galleries well and can get around pretty fast. The current, though crowded major show, is of Van Gough's drawings:) )

You might enjoy that.

Give me some ideas of what you have in mind. Once again we have the beauty of knowing that New York offers many options, it really helps if people have something they know they would like to do.

I will get bagsbee and other ARGFest people to help me come up with a plan.

Addlepated: where is the place you had lunch inside the hotel? I cant remember it now.

----
For Saturday - I think we need to have lunch before we leave Manhattan. We could find someplace near 42nd street I guess. Although 11:30 is pretty early for lunch.

There won't be any place near the cemetery to get lunch, if it is anything like the neighborhood that the Evergreen cemetery is in.

If this is ok, maybe we should meet at a restaurant instead of across from the Chyrsler building - which is a very huge public space to try to find people? Or we can meet there, go to Union Square, get lunch there and then start our trek?

I think we need to allow at least an hour to get to the cemetery from Union Square ( and about 15 -20 minutes to get to Union Square on the 4 or 5 from Grand Central) The trains run less frequently on Saturday and we don't want to be late.
-----

But after the whole thing is over and we come back to Manhattan I was going to suggest trying Rafifi's. If that is just to Lower East Side for people there is always the Heartland Brewery in Union Square.

Rafifi's is a bar we wanted to try for ARGFest but we couldn't get the logistics worked out.
------
actually see what bagsbee thinks.

I wouldn't mind going to the Met and that's definitely on my evergrowing list of stuff to do "the next time I'm in NY". The VanGogh drawings would be great to see as he is one of my favorite artists. I was as fascinated, if not more so, with his drawings as I was his paintings when I saw them at the VanGogh Museum. I would also like to see the photography & occult exhibit. There's also photography exhibit at the Whitney that I wouldn't mind taking in if I had or could find the time.

Meeting for lunch before leaving the city is a good idea. The Graveyard Games start at 2:30 and if we need to leave by 12:30ish (allowing for travel and early exploration of the cemetery for chips & jokers), we should probably hook up no later than 11:30. I don't think that's too early for lunch, though others may differ... perhaps there's a decent diner nearby where we can get either breakfast or lunch.

Not sure what Raffifi's is or is not, but I trust your judgement Smile

A triumvirate of ARG Ghoddesses...joy. I don't know if I have plans on Friday night, but if I do, I don't anymore...we're gonna party like rockstars. We be hangin' tough like the New Kids.

I work during the day on Friday, I'm in the Village if you want to get together for lunch or early dinner - we could try one of the good and ridiculously cheap Indian places on E. 6th St.

I am totally down, I haven't been there in like 20 years, and view is the absolutely spectacular (even better than Empire State Building).

And against Joe's better judgment, I'd be willing to try Ruby Foo's, sounds like a hoot, I've never been there.

As far as nocturnal activities, I say we just put on our drinkering caps and go bar-hopping...although I'm open to whatever.

Oh, and isn't there some poker thing happening on Saturday?

cool ...

well someone figure out a schedule and we can buy tickets in advance for Rockefeller Center -- I think we
need to do this. I don't mind getting them for us if we know when and how many people. The tickets are $15 per adult - but really worth it.
/me tries not to overplan everything all the time Wink
