I've got a set of letters from the Su Doku that look likely.

But I cant work out what word to make from them. Confused

I've finally solved the Su Doku!

Stage 1:
Solve the Su Doku grid!

Stage 2:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Make two digit numbers and think of the binary puzzle earlier.

Stage 3:
I have never seen this word before, and just struck lucky when making up new words!
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Maybe I'm just blind Wink

The last spoiler may be a bit too crypic, but I'll see how it goes.

I got it too... wow... weird word indeed...

onto the next one though Smile

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You won't find it in wordsmithy's anagram list for some reason... go elsewhere

Absolute beginner (no, not the Bowie movie)

Quite intimidating, it is, to be wading into this among you grizzled vets. I've never known much about ciphers and cryptograms, etc.. So. . here's my question - having solved the quite basic (though for me time consuming) pair of first clues, I'm wondering this: Do most of you crack the ciphers by "hand" as I do, or do you use programs? Let me guess: You write the apps yourselves? That would be beastly as I've no aptitude for that. . .

I solved the first one by hand, too (not the instructions; the actually start of the contest). I'm not that familiar with cryptography, so I kind of gave up on finding the encryption method after about 15 minutes. It wasn't that bad.

I solved
#1 to #3 (inclusive): by hand - (I include the index page in that)
#4: I used an applet that's available from the unfiction sidebar.
#5 through #8 (inclusive): I again solved by hand.
#9 (the Su Doku): I solved half by hand, half with a solver found via google.
#10... working...

You did the index page by hand? I take it you've gotten to the point where you can read ROT-13 as well as you can read regular English. If so, that's pretty impressive.

I started it as a simple sub, realised that it was ROT-13 and that just made it easier (every letter is equal to its counterpart - j=w=j etc..)

so, yeah, I solved it by hand... but not as a ROT

Someone please help with 3.... I've got it decoded to ascii, but it seems to only give 25 characters or so, and pasting that into the bar as the answer yields nothing.... what am I missing? Anyone?

Read the inviso text on the page, or look at the hint I gave back on page 1

Found the hidden text hours ago.... still no luck figuring the answer though, I think I've been staring at this one for way too long! I'm sure when I work it out I'll kick myself, but I can't think of any answer that is 28 characters long....

so how many bits would there be per character if you were looking at getting 28 characters from 196 binary digits?

Anyone care to be noble enough to offer a rookie a hint on the three columns of numbers puzzle? What does one call this type of puzzle?
