Here we go, one more time... TROUT

From this thread:
Phaedra wrote:
My first post here was long, dry, badly constructed and rambling. And yet no one said anything nasty -- in fact people were very nice and welcomed me to the forum and everything else. I don't think anyone even trouted me until I'd posted about 40 times or so.

(I preface all of the following by saying that Phaedra's post was the trigger, and not the reason, for my decision to speak up. I do not point blame at Phaedra, or anyone else in particular, for the misunderstandings that I am about to speak up about. Phaedra is a lovely person Very Happy )

I think the term 'trout' has received a bad rap from some who think it is a term of disrespect or 'flame'. Quite simply, the term trout originated (from my meager understanding) from the Cloudmakers Yahoo Group. When it was first introduced to the group, despite the wonderful explanation that went with the idea, people misuses the term. Over time, the community at large learned to embrace the term and continued to use it as a term of respect.

When I say "trout" to you, I don't simply mean the fish, I mean to say to you: "Listen. I respect you. It's great that you're here and posting and that we're working together for a common goal. Nonetheless, I have some polite criticisms."

Now, I think some of you out there have forgotten that it is, indeed, a term of respect. This means that some are TROUTing others for repetitious discoveries without linking to the original post or thread where the fact was first mentioned. It also means that some are using the term TROUT as a flame, which was never the intent.

Trout is not a bad thing, folks. Trout is how tell each other about mistakes without it turning ugly and nasty. Trout is how we eliminate duplication and streamline productivity and efficiency. Trout is a funny word to start with, and thus, should be used in the most light-hearted of ways. So, if you are one of those who didn't know about the term (and hadn't found time to check the glossary for its definition, here it is, and now you know. For those of you who continue to misuse the term Trout (accidentally or purposefully), please stop.

Perhaps I should have said "they didn't *even* trout me." I looked up the term when I came here, and I never viewed it as nasty or ugly.

What I meant is that they didn't *even* trout me. There were things I posted that had been posted before, and they just let it go without comment until I'd been around for a bit.

But sorry if I've been misusing it, either literally or by implication. Smile

You haven't. It was something that I had in mind to say for quite a while, and your post served as a reminder. Very Happy

trout

This is a good reminder.

Here's a thought.. post a link to this description when someone is trouted? Or how about requiring a minimum number of posts from someone before they are trouted. Like giving a beginner a break? Or maybe only mods could use the trout? Or maybe we could get rid of that emoticon entirely -could it be the getting hit over the head part that makes the recipient feel flamed? Or perhaps design a new one with the trouter respectfully handing the trout of polite criticism to the troutee?

I would agree with getting rid of the emoticon, possibly replacing it with something less violent Wink Being hit over the head doesn't really fit very well with what is supposed to be a respectful gesture!

Noobs, on the whole, tend to get [search]ed for their first few troutable offences, which is probably far more productive.

Well we did start off with a static trout some time ago - green, wasn't it? I think that's a great idea, Fi 3

Yeah, I think 35% of my moderator duties during ilovebees quickly became, "remove trout icon from post that does not have link to trouted information."

Lather, rinse, repeat.

A nice little classy-lookin' fish icon might be just the thing. Perhaps, like the [search] tag, it could lead to the Search page for this forum? But, the poster would still have the responsibility to provide a link to the thing being trouted, natch.

How about every time the word trout is used, it's linked to a definition of the word, and some advice on how to avoid it (i.e search).

I've never really liked trout. The problem is that if your new your not going to know wtf anyone means by it. By the time you explain it, there was no reason to tag it as 'trout' it could just be a friendly advice on using the boards.

Is there any way possible to make an emoticon "clickable" as in,
link the "TROUT" icon to a "SEARCH" button, so that when you click it, it goes to a search page?
That would add self-explanitory measures aswell. Smile
Whatcha think? Space? Wishi?

We could make it so if you type [trout] it puts the emoticon and it's linked yes

It might be a good idea.

Dunno, you would think ARGers who don't know what it means would go looking, considering Smile , but since people obviously *aren't* and there is obviously rather widespread misunderstanding of the term...<shrug>
