Still trying to figure out how Random Martin and Splinternails tie into all this. In looking back through this thread I've noticed that some passages (email to people, comments left on LJ) are exactly the same as cached entries on splinternails/splinterworld....I'm still confused and trying to sort it out in my head. Anyone have a Coles Notes version, because I've read through and through and am still a bit confused about how/if this stuff ties in.

If these people are chars in an ARG, I find it dificult to just ignore all the cached stuff on them. If they aren't chars, what are they and how do they fit into the story? Do we have a story?

transmission received : : : |||1.15.3.20.02.|||

Greetings...and welcome...or not...to www.splinternails.com.

For those of you intercepting this transmission, here is the official fansite dedicated to that one and lonely: splinternails. Our crack[ed up] splinterteam pulled many a one-nighter to have this site ready and loaded by tonight, 31 October - splinternails' birthday - but alas, the conspiracy speaks: too many impossibles in never enough time...

(We submit, it doesn't help that our splinterteam consists mainly of human-units, one pixel-pushing pet, more voices-in-the-head than we can usually manage, all sponsored in part by a constant supply of cigarettes, vodka, devil music, and contanimated brainjuice...and caffeine. Yes, yes...caffeine. Caffeine is our friend.)

As this message is being clickity-click-clicked (with the aid of our good, GOOD friend caffeine), all we have now to offer is a selection of poetry and songs, a few blogs in the works, and a forum you can link here to register for. In the near future you can expect: artwork, digital images, ooh's and ahh's for sale, polls, trolls, things that go wrong in the right, and other assorted splintereffects. Give us a few more nights and we'll have things sorted out right and proper. After that, the universe will be ours.

In the meantime, wander about and try not to get yourseld abducted...Also, keep an eye out for www.splinterworld.com, splinternails' personal playground.

A special thanks to the_splinterbitch, splinterInk's resident code-fiend and whipping girl. She's responsible for all the pretty colours and flashing pixels.

...from the soulless automatons @ splinterInk.

Enjoy.

You have been warned...

The Fool Moon Boi blogrealm has divided in three...columns, that is; in conjuction with the launch of splinternails.com v2.01. The left-side images and links are meant to better integrate the two sites.

The primary reason for the redesign[s] is to further incorporate the art I create in fleshlife with weblife; more significantly, to have both worlds contribute directly to the end result, instead of simply reflecting the same object in two different mirrors.

The probjects link, currently disabled, will access various projects I am working on, including a few involving reader [i.e. your] participation. In the future, expect sound and visuals, downloads and more...

Any questions, comments, &or suggestions are appreciated.

Finally, explosions and PIE! to the splinterbitch for scripts what go "Oooooooooh."

...No. No. No. I am NOT splinternails.

Perhaps once upon a time ago I was -sometimes- possessed by him, my senses and will involuntarily usurped by him - but he has since become extremely impatient and unneeding of human-units...as I have become one of the many soulless automatons in his humble employ.

splinternails is now someone, something, far beyond out of control.

At anyrate, I would like to extend sincere appreciations to everyone including, but not limited to: my agent, the splinterfans, my friends at www.livejournal.com, as you're all part of the reason why www.splinternails.com & www.splinterworld.com now exist.

Also, kidney punches to the monkey dancers, the artrobots, and the conspiracy @splinterInk - you know who you are...

Honestly, I dunno. I am really hoping a more experienced ARGer can shed some light. To me, if this isnt a real ARG, someone simply used it as a marketing tool for their website, knowing we would run out searching for any info we could and keeping it at the top of search engine lists. Then again, this information could be incomplete and maybe it is a real ARG (as my thoughts of the meaning are). Until further information can be provided to prove we are doing nothing more than helping someone publicize their new website and actually wasting our time looking for something that doesnt exist, I'm not beating my head against any more walls.

I haven't been following this, so I don't really know what's going on, but...

As to whether this is an ARG: if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck...

It's pretty hard to tell at this point, I think. ARGs are a legitimate form of marketing, and marketing ARGs are just as legitimate as non-marketing ARGs. But I think you can make a distinction between ARGs and other types of web storytelling, or other types of viral marketing, like OurColony, for example. But the fact that it's promoting something certainly doesn't prevent it from being an ARG; some of the most famous and beloved ARGs have been promotions for products.

That said, an ARG promoting, say, a personal website would be a little odd, IMHO. One of the payoffs of playing a professionally-done marketing ARG is, to put it bluntly, that when a company is getting something out of an ARG (e.g. promotion for one of their products, or just their company in general), they're willing to fund it. More money means the luxury of hiring very talented professional writers, actors, designers, and so on.

However, playing an ARG isn't about whether or not it's promoting something. Playing an ARG is about the experience of playing. So, theoretically, even an ARG promoting a boring personal site could be a good ARG, if the game itself were engaging and well-designed.

All of this, of course, is just my $0.02. I suggest that if you're curious about how to define what constitutes an ARG, you check out Imbri's Quickstart ARG Guide, as well as browsing the META section.

Finally, Jane McGonigal (one of the 4orty2wo Entertainment PMs, and a prolific writer and thinker on the subject of ARGs, as well as other types of gaming) recently did a presentation touching on what makes an ARG an ARG. You can find the PowerPoint slides from that presentation, as well as her other papers, on her website.

First I will thank Phaedra for her reply and wisdom on the subject, then I will apologize for what seems to be poor wording on my part to convey my concerns. I sent her a PM asking her to read my post and to help my ignorances upon the subject, not realizing having followed the sequence up to this point would have been necessary in order to understand my words correctly. I have read, and would encourage everyone else that might be confused, to read the things she outlined. It is where I gathered my base of thoughts and beliefs upon the subject as they are.

"afgrst" only anagrams to one word.

my 2 cents: why all the questions about whether this is an arg?
we've all been playing along, working out riddles and clues.. getting teeny
tiny bits of story, a countdown, interactions.. (all of which seems to me to be pre-game activity) and the pre-game just ended two days ago-- at which time we were given an enormous amount of mysterious info to begin with--

the old cached items may be just something that this pm's building off of.. so what? it's not like nothing is happening -- why are we spending time on this? Confused

Whether I agree or not that this is an ARG, and right now I'm playing along with only some small reservations, I think we have every right to discuss the subject of the cached items to determine how or if they play a part in this thing. It's confused me a bit, and by reading enough of them you can get a sense of characterization - who these people are. So does that characterization carry over to this saga?

sorry, caterpillar... i do understand the confusion with the cache -- it is confusing -- but hopefully as we continue to work on this.. this will somehow make sense --
i just didn't want to see this thread get hijacked with a long "is this an
arg" thing

As I previously stated, my intent was never to challenge the meaning of anything. I simply voiced my questions and opinions as they did or did not make sense to me, hence my request that a more experienced "gamer" please help me understand better. As it has now come to me affecting others' experience in this process and the concern that I was creating a hijacked thread, I have made the decision to just step away. I wish you guys the best of luck in wherever this takes you. I have enjoyed this portion of my time.

Whatever QU13E is, I'm in. Very Happy Hope Glecius comes back!

For what it's worth (exactly two cents), I think the javacode was just for the password protection. Since the beginning most of the answers have come from the pictures (exception source code countdown), so I'm sticking with staring at the pictures my brain hurts.

My questions-

1. Random Martin and Splinternails one in the same? Or two different people?

2. Does "sound of the rising sun" = sounds like "rising sun" or is this a reference to Japanese?

haha, i hadn't even thought about that one! sounds like "rising sun" ... gonna have to think about that after i finish this lousy paper.

so do we think that maybe we can find the answer in one of the names back on the old splinterworld site, seeing as how most everything is at least based on that site?

oh, and i googled neobitch's LJ, and it said nothing about splinternails, so i'm guessing she's not part of the game, but just the original splinterbitch. has anyone told her about qu13e? maybe she'd be willing to help out a wee bit?

edit: i don't remember who it was, but whoever speaks japanese, do you know of any words/names that sound like "rising sun" or "the rising sun"? this feels like it might be a step in the right direction ... but that's just my opinion.

okay it is early on the west coast and i haven't had tea yet but
how 'bout english words? "raisin" "rye son" "resin" "reason" "Ryazan"

edit: and it is ekplixi that speaks japanese - i think
and here's some japanese
Shooting Star (Ryuusei)
Ideal (Risou) Serenity (Seion)
Romance (Renai) Serenity (Seion)

Conscience (Ryoushin) also means parents
