His last words, before he put me on hold, were, "What we have to do is... Don't panic, and talk to your superiors." Sounded to me like he was panicing a little.

Okay, so now that I'm on hold: It's a live person, acting as an operator on a tip line. (He mentioned that he had a performance review coming up, and I tried to use that to get his name, but no dice.)

I said I was calling about someone I thought theMatt Viet, and he said the name sounded familiar. He asked whether a crime was currently in progress--

ack, he's back. more later

5441 Graham is the place Matt Viet is at in case he asks.

Thanks, got that. So, as I was saying:

I said I was calling about someone I thought they were looking for, Matt Viet. He said the name sounded familiar, and wrote it down. He asked whether a crime was currently in progress. I said I had no information of a current crime, but that I had information that was nevertheless important. (Of course, I didn't sound nearly as coherent as this.) I said that I believed that he was not presently at the place they thought he was -- 5441 Graham -- and that I had information that they were sending some people out to that address to look for Matt.

<back again, more later>

Edit: <Hmm. These conversations are getting shorter.>

I mentioned that I believed Ben Rojas was handling the investigation, and he said, "Oh, I know Ben!"

<back again!>

I also called 1-866-704-1586

The phone was answered by someone who was both out of breath and sounded very nervous. After composing himself the following conversation transpired:

FBI: This is Rogers (?) FBI, how can I help you?
Arana: Can you tell me the whereabouts of an agent Rojas, Benito Rojas?
FBI: Perhaps, do you need to contact him?
Arana: Yes, I have some information that could be of help to him.
FBI: What does this information pertain to?
Arana: It's related to a Matt Viet and a Lucy Brown, if I could talk to him perhaps it could be of help to him.
FBI: (Pause)
FBI: (very agitated, nearly yelling) IT'S A BURNING BUILDING!!! IT'S OUT OF MY DEPARTMENT!!!!
FBI: (Click....)

I didn't get much (read: nothing), but it was way cool none the less!!! Especially interesting that the voice actor sounded like he was even more nervous than I was! Of course, I was clued in that I might get a live answer by Shad0's post. Not a card, but still makes me feel like I am in!

Re: ACK!

I feel so sorry for this poor guy...

So, short version: His name is Roger. He's a Junior Trainee at the FBI. He is aware that the LAPD has trapped people in a burning building, with sharpshooters on the roof to get anyone who tries to escape. He's clearly miserable about it. He's talked to Ben Rojas, and the FBI has no jurisdiction, so he thinks he can't do anything.

WHAT CAN HE DO?

More details on the conversation later. For now, anyone with an idea how an FBI Junior Trainee can help Matt Viet, post here or call 1-866-704-1586.

This is why people shouldn't trust the cops. Did he say anything about fire rescue or anything? And can't the feddies just usurp the local govt?

Shad0, based on the timing of our respective posts, I think that he put you on hold when he answered my call! He appears to have gone right back to you when he dumped me.

Poor guy, trainee, interagency conflict, can't do anything, and being contacted by clueless unSlingers...

He um says someone has an idea about it, but he wouldn't even let me get a word in edgewise, but then again, I am pretty polite when it comes to the phone and not interrupting people.

What idea is out there? Does anyone know?

btw, the guy was TOTALLY hilarious, with his semi-standard greeting ending with something like, "If this has nothing to do with saving lives, I don't want to hear about it!!"

Matt was in room 308. We believe he took the dumbwaiter to the freezer in the basement. We're trying to get Roger to tell Rojas to go to the basement and get Matt out

With sharpshooters watching the building? If Rojas doesn't have jurisdiction...

There's a freezer by the linen delivery, if the building is burning, that's one place that could hold up. Maybe someone could get ahold of Matt.

FBI has jurisdiction over local law enforcement every time. LAPD is currently at the back of the building, but we're trying to get Roger to tell Ben about the smaller door that's closer to the freezer
