[UPDATE] Scarlett's Story - November 11th

Decisions

Category: story, 02:00 PM

Well. Brede is better. Much better. So much better that he can walk around a little, that his parents are going to be able to take him home to Perplex City soon. And me? I should be going back with them. I really should. It's perfectly clear. And yet.

I've spent my week talking to Major Castille, hearing more of his life story and talking about what we plan to do next. Although he says his daughter is the real genius, he's quite the computing whizz himself; he's put together a little plan for what to tell my family and friends if I decide to stay here when the others go home. There's a bird and animal sanctuary up here in Tanraga - Major Castille can make it look like I'm doing an internship there, rig up their systems to list me on the staff, send mail from them confirming that I'm working there. It's very clever. So, if I do decide to go, my family won't be worried about me. That's pretty important to me.

He's rigged something else up, too. Something much more clever and a bit scary. It has to do with what he wants me to do: to go to Viendenbourg to find Allain.

Apparently Henry and Allain had suspected for a while - based on coded information that Allain's mother Claire had sent them - that Viendenbourg would be protected by a sort of "confusion-field". It's done in some complicated way with a remote form of "galvanic vestibular stimulation," he says. Anyway, it's something that is broadcast in a wide ring around Viendenbourg and which makes you feel confused and even fall over or wander off course if you get too close. The field starts off very mild and becomes more intense the closer you get to the centre. Henry thinks that this is what happened to our party, and that Brede just got really unlucky in falling down a cliff. He thinks that we got too close to the centre, much closer than any ordinary hiking party would have done, because Allain was with us. Because of what Allain had.

Knowing to expect the "galvanic vestibular stimulation," and armed with some information from Claire, Henry and Allain had rigged up a device in his key that would cancel out most of the effects. This, Henry thinks, is why we got closer than we should have done - because Allain remained unaffected for much longer and was able to guide us even when we got more and more confused. And then... well, Henry doesn't know what happened next. I showed him Allain's ripped-apart key and it made him even more worried. He thinks that maybe it burned out at the last minute. Anyway, he's taken a look at the kinds of stresses it's exhibited, and has put something similar together in my key. It's sturdier; he thinks it'll be better at withstanding the strain. So, if I go to Viendenbourg, I should be protected.

If I go. That's the big question. I've probably got a week or so to think about it, and then I'll have to make a decision. My friends will be going home. Should I go too?

Laughing It might be great for us, but would it be great for her? This whole thing sounds shadier and shadier...

For instance, if they knew about the confusion machine, why did Allain bring Scarlett and friends along, knowing they were unprotected?

Also, I'm pretty sure the injury on Brede's leg was described as
Quote:
They say it looks like someone hit it, repeatedly, with something large and heavy
because it was beaten repeatedly. No, I'm not pinning this on Allain (*fangirl* Laughing ), but I do think there's something dangerous out there that the Major is either unaware of or neglecting to mention.

The confusion thing sounds rather like an episode of 'Black Hole High', which my 10-year-old daughter likes!

I'm with Mokey. I think our hero is in big trouble on this one. She should take the rigged key and run. Then she can replicate the key for her compadres, return, and enjoy safety in numbers.

I think that might be a good idea, who knows kurt might show some interest since he's been doing boring work for violet this whole time.

I think we were a bit rash and didn't try and warn scarlett until it was too late last time, I don't want to see scarlett put herself at unessicary risk again. Let's not be rash.

Of course, it is rather a long trip for her to get out there. I don't really expect her to come up with an excuse for going out again. Confused Not sure where to go on this one, especially since she's so flatly against us telling Violet.

A slick story explaining her absence, a gizmo that blew up Allain's key, a 'confusion' field around a super-secret installation - Scarlett might as well get measured for her coffin.

lol

when you put it like that, I think we need to get kurt to have a little examination of whats whats what using a scientific dictionary. The understanding I have of 'remote galvanic vestibular stimulation' is a chemically induced electric current which shocks your inner ear. Presumably this shocking of the inner ear would effect your balance center, but i dont see how this would cause mental black outs, especially such precisely timed ones. Also how can you remotely induce an electric current? Maybe its a PXC thing...

More reading on acoustic weaponry (which was used in Gulf War I by U.S. forces, but not reported on. However, soldiers on the ground took tales of this wonder weapon home with them.), for kicks: Project Squid

I think the more you become unbalanced your brain spends more time trying to work out whats going on and correcting itself.
This could confuse the brain enough that it wants a reboot and you black out???

or

perhaps they got so unbalanced they hit their heads on low hanging branches which knocked them out or gave them a concussion??

my limited medical knowledge reasoning there Very Happy

OK, this may be a plot hole, or not...but if there's a confuzzling ray spreading its waves within a radius of Viendenbourg, how come the 'rescue' guys that found Scarlett, etc weren't affected??

Oh, if you want some proof of what perplexed said about remote galvanic vestibular stimulation, you can try this.

1. Get a 9V battery, and a standard PP9 (9v battery) connector, with the wires exposed

2. Attach one wire to your forehead and the other to a certain part of your ear. Do this WHILE STANDING. The result will be that you lean over to that side. OK, so you don't get confused, but you won't be able to stop it happening, well at least not the first time you do it.

For the record, I'm not a suicidal battery junkie or anything, I just know this from my VR module (we're experimenting with this principle as part of fully-immersive environment simulation).

I think it's her vestibule and she can stimulate all she wants! But seriously, the way this plot is panning out (young girl grows up in a James Bond like mission and falls for some misunderstood/moody youth. It reeks of the Disney Channel.) We should endorse her to go and confront the ancient city. (Cue thunder and scary music) That or call Hilary Duff to the rescue.
