Thinking and planning

Category: story, 06:28 PM

I'm back. Things are moving on, even while I've been sitting here in hospital. Brede's getting better every day. I sit with him, we talk about the future, about how it'll be when we're back in the city and he's recovered. And when I'm not with Brede, I've been talking to Major Henry Castille, hearing his story, finding out what he knows. I'll try to summarise what he's told me as well as I can.

The last thing I wrote was about his daughter, Allain's mother. She's the reason they're here. He's shown me a picture of her, him and Allain all together. He didn't want to show me the picture, but I've been asking for proof of his story. He's told me a lot about his family history. We've had so many conversations over the past two weeks, but I'll try to condense what he's said, while telling it in his own words:

"My family's history," he said, "can be traced back hundreds of years. Since before the... since before 0BC. The family of Castille is a noble one. For centuries, we have been leaders in the arts and sciences, the Academy and the military. Especially the military. So much knowledge of the past has been lost, but family traditions remain strong. We Castilles called ourselves the gatekeepers and our home was at Viendenbourg, part of the greater province of Perplex City.

"In the city, we think of the past as being long gone, unretrievable, but it is not as far away as you might think. There were Castilles at Viendenbourg during the War. My grandfather knew the last of them, an old man when my grandfather was a boy, a man called Salvant Castille. Salvant had been a seven-year-old child in 0BC. It is he who kept alive the story of what happened to our family, that we were sacrificed so that Perplex City could win the war.

"The details are hazy - Salvant Castille was only a child, of course, but what he knew was grim. Our family were the keepers of a great secret at Viendenbourg, a secret that was used to win the war, but the use of it destroyed the family, killed the people who had guarded it for so long. Out of all the family: parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, seven-year-old Salvant was the only survivor. He passed down the story of the terrible wrong done to us, and I have tried to learn the truth.

"It has taken a great deal of time and effort for me to locate Viendenbourg; I was a young man when I began to piece together the evidence from the archives and from family tales, but now I am sure that the location I gave you was correct. I want to find out what happened at Viendenbourg, how my family died. I want to bring the truth into the light.

"I raised my daughter, Claire, to follow in my footsteps; using my military knowledge and her software expertise we continued our research. For a time, after Allain was born, she became disillusioned. She didn't want Allain to be involved, said that the family traditions were all nonsense. But she had to believe after we started to detect chatter in the most secret channels, talk that indicated that something was happening again at the place we knew as Viendenbourg.

"Claire has always been one of the top minds in her field. She's cultivated underworld contacts as well as the more 'legitimate' ones so that she would be in the right place to find out more about Viendenbourg. When we heard that something was happening again in that place, we worked out how to put her in the right circles, how to get her name on the right lists. Soon enough, she was offered a 'most secret' assignment in the Tanraga mountains; we knew that we'd struck gold. We were thrilled, the three of us - we would finally discover the truth about Viendenbourg!

"Claire was offered this position in mid-267. She went out to Tanraga and Allain and I were left behind in the city. To begin with, we heard from her frequently. All her communications were intercepted so she had to speak in code, but we knew she was OK. It was she who set up the automatic trace that attacked your computer and your friend Kurt's. But later, we weren't hearing from her as much. And a few months ago, we stopped receiving messages altogether. That was when Allain decided to go out to Viendenbourg himself.

"Forgive me for involving you. I didn't want him going alone. You're not the only person to search for Viendenbourg, but you seemed trustworthy and good-hearted. I gave you a copy of the map so that you'd travel with him, to keep him safe. I would have accompanied him myself, but I am an old man. The hike would have been too much for me."

So that's the story. It explains, at least, what's been happening to *me* these past few months; explains why Major Castille gave me the map, and why he and Allain are so interested in Viendenbourg. What I still don't know, what *we* still don't know is what really is going on at Viendenbourg - Henry's family history is pretty vague about what the big secret over there was to begin with, let alone about what they could be doing now. But I guess the only way I'll find that out is to go back there. I just don't know what to do. I've told Henry I'll think it over for a few days, and he seems disappointed, but there's not much he can do. So that's what I'm doing: thinking about what to do next, waiting for Brede to heal.

Edit: Dated November 4th, but posted today (5th)

It's highly likely that Vikram Castellan (from the Sentinel article) was related or part of the Castille family (or vice versa).

Castellan ~= Gatekeeper.

So...was the Reynolds Ionizer the terrible weapon or was it a protection device to spirit away the Cube?

Also - timeline? Salvant Castille was an old man when Henry's grandfather was a boy. Say old means around 90. So, in 83-ish AC, Henry's grandfather is around maybe 10. When is Henry Castille's father born? Perhaps when the grandfather is 40? So, father born around 113 AC. If Henry Castille is 40 when his son (Allain's father) is born, then that's Allain's father being born in 153, and with another iteration, Allain himself being born around 200.
It's now, what, 269? Clearly someone in this timeline was vastly older, or this family lives longer or is fertile longer than "normal" Perplexians (who seem to die between 100-120).

Do you think we ought to pass on the message about C to Scarlett? And if she's not the only one, who else is searching? Also, Castille's pretty comfortable with putting a 20-year-old girl in danger and withholding information from her. They could have all died. She's trustworthy and good-hearted? You could have trusted her with the information that your wife is possibly being held hostage or dead, that she's traveling to the 'ground zero' of the weapon that wiped out most of the surrounding nations during the War, that..argh. He's not to be trusted. And why did Allain say that Scarlett would ruin everything knowing about Viendenbourg?

It's still very suspicious, the lack of information about Allain's father. Perhaps it's V.

I agree with you that this is very suspicious, and it is a strange coincidence that the mysterious people we're learning about happen to have a C family name.

Something's at least fishy here. I was wondering the same thing about why Allain would have made that comment about Scarlett ruining everything. I also feel that the motivation the TOM (even though we have a name I can't let it go) explained for leading Scarlett into all of this is very iffy. He just wanted Allain to have a friend? Confused She seemed like a nice girl? Confused

My BS meter's going off. B.S. Something isn't right.

I'm inclined to agree with Mokey here. The argument Scarlett overheard on the train definitely does not tie in with what the Major is saying. Definite B.S.

Also, there is no indication of what legitimate organisations Claire Castille? (son=likely married=change of name) is involved in. It could be the military she was involved with, and they stole the cube for a weapon. (the military like that sort of thing Wink )

[SPEC] The cube is the power source to the thing in Viendenbourg. I could never see a motive for an underworld group to steal the cube, its not like they could sell it, and it radiates all kind of stuff.

Who ever did take it wanted it to either a) worship or b) use as part of something else. The military taking it, combined with the Major's stories (which are at least part BS) woulds certainly suggest that something big was going on at Viendenbourg.

As an aside, and related to the thread about the war, its interesting to note that he describes Viendenbourg as in the 'province of Perplex City'. Seems to lend weight to the view of city-states that has been proposed.

I agree with Mokey and Jakeo as well.

[SPEC]

However, IF his story has even a small amount of truth to it, then I'm more inclined to say that the Major isn't looking to bring just information to light, he's gonna use that same weapon to take revenge on Perplex City!!! It was used against his family to help win the war, so naturally he should be angry. If he isn't then he's not human!!! This could explain why Allain told Scarlett she'd 'ruin everything', and also the argument between Allain and the major.

The Major, Allain etc may be working as part of another larger organisation, like 3P for example, to just make use of their resources and get to Viendenbourg.

The Reynolds Ionizer could then possibly be part of a self-defence system to protect the 'weapon' from falling into the wrong hands by sending the control key/power source/etc (don't know what the cube has to do with all this yet) off somewhere remote, like Earth.

And THEN! That leaves the whole story open for The Major and his daughter to, with the help of naive Scarlett, get positioned to destroy PPC altogether! But this means that Allain, who has secretly fallen in love with Scarlett, will be forced to make a choice between his family tradition and the woman he loves. *dun, dun, DUN!* Allain will eventually choose to sacrifice himself to stop his fanatic family and save the girl. There'll be a really heart-wrenching scene in which Allain unties Scarlett (their hostage) and tells her to go on and live a happy life with Brede, who will take care of her. Scarlett will ask what he's going to do, but Allain will tell her not to worry. Run, Scarlett. Run and find Brede. Run home.

LOL!!!

Let's just hope, for the sake of all things good and sane, that it DOESN'T go down the corny, soppy, tragic-romance, dribbly blah blah storyline!!

What if Hugh Grant becomes an employee!!?? hell no!!!

Now if they hired Mr.T, and the guy from Bullseye (old UK TV gameshow) then they'd have an un-stopable world-dominating team!!! Let's just hope 3P aren't looking at this and taking notes!!!

Shudup foo!!!
