STOL

STOL. Like somekind of greeting. reminds me of the klinggon "Quapla!" (nerdalert)

What it's not:
    Short Take-Off & Landing
    Spacecraft Test and Operations Language
    Student Online
    Synthetic Theater of Learning
    System Test and Operations Language
So, what is it?

STOL was an unsolved/unsolvable puzzle in the ARG MetaCortechs

See this thread.

/me waits for a MetaUrchin to come along and explain properly

Usually, we don't use the Glossary section to start question threads. That's why I'm moving this to the Various & Sundry section.

STOL was part of a "puzzle" from Metacortechs (Krystyn, I use the quotation marks with a certain sense of sarcasm, I hope you notice it... Evil or Very Mad ). It all started with this pic:

There's a bit of text along the right side in a cryptogram, that, when translated, reads "Always to have lessons to learn". The four letters in the red box are Always to have lessonS TO Learn.

Some of the Metaurchins (the players of Metacortechs) became obsessed with the word STOL (sick, sick people Rolling Eyes ), using it for all sorts of purposes, one of them was greeting other people, and that purpose kinda stuck...

So there, now you know, and be sure to read all about it's background in the Metaurchins Book Project!

Oh yeah, and that puzzle also spawned my own webdomain lessonstolearn.net which currently still hosts Project UM, nicknamed Metacortechs Reloaded.

Hahahahaha. From that thread that Atrophied linked:

Ehsan, on Oct. 3rd, two days after the puzzle went up, wrote:
We could read into this forever and it couldn't mean anything..

Ahem.

Also, because I was shocked when I saw that the thread was only four pages long, there was also this, this, and, to complete the picture, this. There were probably more.

Joebrent eloquently expressed our, um, collective burgeoning insanity in Notes From the Underslept.

In essence, the little Oct. 1st girl sautéed the sanity of a whole lot of ARG players. That should explain a lot. Mr. Green

We are ARGers...‎

You have to realize that when you show us something that even remotely resembles a ‎puzzle, we will dissect it piece by piece and scrutinize it down to the tiniest shred until ‎we figure out what it means. This gives way to huge amounts of analysis and speculation, ‎which in itself is part of the fun... as long as you reach a logical conclusion at the end.‎

The October 1st Picture at Paintover.net is the perfect example of ARGonaut behavior. ‎From the day the game started and until after it ended, we pored over a single image. Just ‎a picture of a little girl, an unidentified skeleton, and some simple substitution. See ‎omnie's thread links above to realize just how much we read into those seemingly simple ‎elements.‎

There was nothing else—no complex cipher, no password box, no interaction, and no ‎indication that this actually is a puzzle. In fact, the PM's did nothing to encourage or ‎discourage our investigation. We are ARGers and we chose to be haunted by a ponytailed ‎girl. We chose to write 300 paragraphs about 1 line of text. We chose to scour the web ‎searching for a cute skeleton.‎

And we enjoyed it.‎

Did we solve anything at the end? Well, no, because there was nothing to solve. Were we ‎frustrated? Yes, again see above threads. But we had fun. We worked on something ‎together which fit into the larger puzzle, and at the end of the day we found solutions that ‎were satisfying to us.‎

I still assert that the answer is "My skeleton is called I.C. Rqponm".

We will never know because the PM's are claiming this wasn't a puzzle, but that is just to make us talk about it forever and ever…

And that, my friend, is one of the many tales in the life of an ARGer

Heh, I remembered that you'd written something dedicated to Oct. 1st, and Giskard linked to the book, so I browsed through it again and aha! Awesomeness. Well, kinda scary awesomeness, but nonetheless.

Also, in hindsight, this was totally my favorite random Oct. 1st-related find. "One day he feels a scratching in his head, as tiny rats devour his brain. It is quite painful. The End."

Stol!

As the creator of the um, 'puzzle,' I'd just like to say that the image itself was originally meant as a greeting, an introductory call to arms for the other hackers. Since the site was supposed to resemble some sort of photoshop-fun portal site, it's not like Caesar could just up and be all, "hay guyz my parents r missin n stuph mebbe but mebbe their ded halp me." There had to be a bit o' somethin' to catch their attention and make them feel cool for figuring something out, so he could lead them along without telling them too much (jeopardizing his search, and possibly jeopardizing their safety in terms of the Monitors who were likely keeping a lookout for any sign of Caesar's presence on the grid).

It was also, uh, really close to our launch date when someone on the Karetao team turned to me and was all, "hey, you're good at making pretty images. will you do something for Paintover?"

"Sure!" I replied brightly, not knowing that my metaphorical head would be put on a chopping block over the next two months, a +5 Stol Axe of Frustration poised and gleaming over my neck. It really was an interesting lesson, as a puppetmaster, to note how absolutely no encouragement from us translated into frenzied obsession to solve something already solved. And, because of the nature of the site, and the plethora of unreliable narrators, having any sort of, "Nah, there's nothing else in that image!" from our end would've likely made matters far, far worse.

Very Happy

Stol!

Rolling Eyes It was just a question........ It just became the "It's almost Weinachtstol"-reunion. Twisted Evil

But thanks all. Its more then I ever wanted to know but nice reading.
Almost dangerous to mention even today: This is not a puzzle..... Thats like a red flag and a bull.

Ohhh but that was inevitable, what with the answer being tied up in a lot of very revisitable memories. We do like our nostalgia, as you'd think you'd be able to tell by the fact that we still, y'know, greet people with "stol." Mr. Green

This totally made me go back and read through the first few threads that I ever posted in (instead of sleeping, I note. krystynsleepdeprivation indeed, forever and ever and aaahhhmakeitstopaaaahhh). I'd forgotten how incredibly Matrix-obsessed I'd been. Maybe that's part of the reason why no other game has been able to recapture anything like the feelings that made me so excited about this game. It comes back so easily, too. Gah. Perhaps I should go become obsessed with, say, space elevators, or, um, cubically-shaped objects...hmph.

This whole process was later on dubbed "krystynsleepdeprivation", and I find it completely unbelievable that it is not mentioned anywhere in the glossary forums!

Yeah, wow, same here...it's unbelievable how much comes back still when browsing though the archived forums. We should start bugging Karetao some more to make another bloody game!

Somehow I can totally picture Caesar pulling that off, in his Australian accent of course... Wink

Ahh, but krystynsleepdeprivation is also the universal scapegoat for all complaints ever.

I don't know why I still have this old chatlog, which wrote:
[00:30] <yanka> heh... blame that on krystyn too
[00:30] <Omnie> Yes. krystynsleepdeprivation.
[00:30] <yanka> let's cypher that
