Although I'm not *in* Chicago, if there are people in need of free housing I can certainly provide also.

Pros - Huge house with two spare bedrooms available upstairs (for ummm "family" arrangements?), and tons tons tons of floor space on the other two floors for those who like the youth-hostel, sleeping bag type environment. I'm not in the city so things are a bit more relaxed here.

Cons - I'm not in the city so I'm farther away. I live about 40 miles from Downtown. It's not that bad of a drive with the skyway practically next door or there's also a train station down the street that drops you off right downtown.

Basically travel would eat up some time, but I'll be making the trip anyway so if people need more free housing it's available. I just don't want anyone to not come because they can't afford a hotel.

disclaimer from husband: offer is provided to people I know. So if I don't know you right now, let's get acquainted before then, mmkay?

Joe, can you please write your messages a little smaller? They're hurting my eyes. Thanks in advance.

Chicago? I could probably make it with enough advance notice. At least for a weekend.

I probably can't host anyone... (I've got a wife and kid in an already super-cramped house...) BUT, weather-dependent, (especially if you get one of those cool metra (train) weekend passes that gives you pretty much unlimited rides, I could host a party in my backyard, as I live in the suburbs, and am half a block away from the metra station. SOOOOoooo... Yeah, that would be cool. It's not Chicago, and it's not anything special, but it could be something else to do...

EDIT: Oh, and I'll bring a "hear, hear" on Krystyn's call of Na 10 cho 15 s.

The main requirements for an enjoyable weekend, IMO, are the afore-mentioned cold beverages, a plan and a place for dinner meet-ups, some general consensus on sightseeing-type activities and playtime, and ample time in the mornings for gossip, breakfast and hangover nursing, not necessarily in that order.

If that is the case, I think it would be beneficial to have a business-type conference every year or couple of years for those of us who like hearing the talky-talk.

I'd also like (and I'm one of the Chicago Organizers, I suppose) the idea of having talking types who get paid to do things say things at me in a conference setting.

So, I'm kinda for that, although it is understood that ARGFOC06 doesn't require these sorts of things.

Yeah, I don't know that it's necessary to have those types of formal presentations/discussions/seminars at every ARGFest. In the case of ARGFestNYC I think the timing was just right for it - it had never been done and it seemed people really wanted it, and This Thing of Ours had grown to the point where it was actually feasible to do. Plus rose is a little OCD...but you didn't hear it from me.

I like the idea of doing the "talky-talk" stuff every other year (as an aside...I find it humorous that we talk about ARGFest like we've been doing it for 20 years). And if we do Vegas '07 the place is ideal for conferences.

In summary:

  • Don't go crazy with the organizering
  • No need for formal talks unless you really want to
  • We're doing ARGFest06 in Chicago. Case closed. Let's pick a date.

I love you joe

Hi guys,

In a semi-official speaking-as-an-employee-of-Mind Candy position, I'm fairly certain that at least one of us will be at Argfest 06 (if only because I'm annoyed I couldn't go last time).

Although Dorkmaster already tried twice, I still heard noone confirm that Chicago is indeed the city of choice yet, but because of where this thread (that I only just noticed!) is going, it might be a good idea to formally decide on Chicago for ARGfest '06?

Once there's agreement on the above, he next step would be to try and set a date, so planning can commence. Maybe it would be best to get a small comittee together to decide on some stuff and perhaps decide on a few options? I'd like to offer my services to help plan ARGfest '06, although, because I'm not as near as some other folks (ahem Wink), it'll mostly be helping out with some planning and perhaps maintaining a website and stuff?

I will do my utmost best to attend ARGfest this time (although some people might be doubting my credibility by now, but I promise, if no new jobs or home buying/selling situations arise, I will try to be there!)

Which, incidently, also means that I won't be doing a simultaneous attempt at organising ARGFest Amsterdam, but you are all still invited to the little MiniFest get-together that I'm hosting in and around Amsterdam somewhere in April/May Smile

Well if it is indeed in Chicago, I will call on us poor Southeasterners for a massive migration/road trip. Unless, air fare is really, really low that weekend.

Oh, we shall see. We shall see.

SF is amazing, and I'm A+ 100% mega behind that. But I've got family in Chicago and my parents would probably pay for the ticket, soooo...
