We need to take Joystiq to task!

A very harsh and painfully mis-informed review of ARG's and viral marketing campaigns was just posted over at Joysiq.com. I feel that one of us should really sit them down and explain the major differences between the two.

Joystiq has been gong downhill over the past few months. their flood of content has borked the signal/noise and what they do have is just reposting other news sites. Let them spiral into obscurity.

I think this was a well writen piece of crap. Who is this 'we' he keep refering to? Is he so afraid he's alone in his opinion? Beside, thats all it is, an opinion.

He's not writing about viral and/or ARG. He's just pissed about stuff being comercial. Probably only visits arthousemovies. Never looks at a sposored Hollywoodmovie..... yeah right.

Same pieces have been writen about first-person shooters as far back as Duke Nukem 3D. "Can't they think of something original for a change?" Thats was about 1995 iirc? Well 1stPS's are still being made and succesfull. Even with real adverts placed in them.

If it a good time I'm having what do I care if it's viral. What does this guy think: we are to stupid to realise its payed advertisement we are playing? It's like complaining about comercialbreaks or adverts in magazines. It pays for what you are looking at. I like it.

Stella rules. Wink
Can somebody tell my what it tastes like? I still don't know.

True, could be yet another effect of the "Great blog buy-out" lol

I made a post in defence of true ARG's....

Same here. It was quite the ineffectual rant, considering their experience and and past history.

I saw several UFers over there -- I'm "Jez" in the comments there -- before I saw this thread Smile

I don't think he's *too* far off the mark. What he seems to be criticising more is campaigns like OrigenXbox360 and Hex168 which use "ARG fever" as a way of spreading themselves virally instead of bothering to do any real marketing. ilb, LCP and other "real" ARGs are in an entirely different league and address several of the criticisms levelled at them.

Basically a lot of blog sites that latched on to the Origen mystery are feeling a bit red-faced right now since it wasn't worth all the column inches given it; instead, they gave a competition a lot of free press. Joystiq isn't the worst offender by far in this stakes, but I think vc is just pointing out that he won't be falling into the same trap again Smile
