[UPDATE] Sentinel - November 17th

View from Earth:
Truth or Taboo?

By HAWK

HawkHumanity always seems to be searching for meaning in its existence. For some, this involves tracing their ancestors; for some, it will be defining themselves by what they do. Many people on Earth find a great sense of identity in their national history, and a fair, unbiased view of the events that formed their nation can be invaluable. Oftentimes, however, the truth can hurt. I guess all of us would find certain aspects of our individual histories hard to look back on, but ultimately, it is this that defines us.

How tragic, then, for people who are denied a truthful retelling of their country's history. There are several governments on Earth that would rather not tell the true story about certain episodes in their past; understandably so, when previous rulers or governments are responsible for genocide, a military shaming or worse. I'm sure that our Perplexian cousins would find such willful perversion of the truth just as abhorrent as we do. And yet it is exactly this attitude, of not wanting to let the truth be aired, that seems to prevail in the minds of those protesting outside the proposed war exhibit.

Yes, war is a terrible thing. Yes, atrocities, slaughter, death and destruction are not pleasant things to review. But for a City, a People, that still seems to be trying to find its identity, it would seem like foolishness to ignore such formative events in Perplex City's history. Worse yet, there must be at least an entire generation that has been brought up with no access to the real history of the city they inhabit, with their history being a taboo. A society that prides itself on mental acuity must surely value the truth, and to deny it from others is truly unfair.

Ultimately, we can't change the past; but we can, and must, be changed by it. I would urge Perplex City to embrace its past, not to run from it if only so that the same mistakes aren't made again.

News in Brief

PCAG Fans Prepare

As December draws near, the most devout fans of the PCAG are starting to lock in their plans for the final six weeks. Caterers are nearly booked solid by now for long strings of championship parties, and every office in the city is preparing for the productivity losses that rise along with the intricate finals diagrams. LETTER OF THE WEEK

I think it's absurd that certain Cubehunters *cough*oliverkeers13*cough*Ryanandrew*cough*cough* have managed to pull ahead of the rest of the pack by "somehow" obtaining second wave puzzle cards ahead of schedule. Obviously, some kind of illicit activities have taken place. Now, I'm not one to spread rumors, but rumor has it that at least one of these evildoers assaulted upwards of five children in the process of stealing these cards. He beat up five children!!! I mean seriously, what kind of sick maniac does that? I think that two things need to be done to fix this problem. First, the source of the puzzle card leak needs to found and plugged. Second, the five victims of this heinous crime should be given the opportunity to extract revenge upon their attacker(s). This Earth policy of "eye for an eye" was first put forth by the ancient leader Hammurabi, and in his honor I suggest a public stoning of the guilty parties. Obviously, five small children who have been recently injured will not be able to lift very large stones, so a large quantity of small stones will be needed instead. This might make the process lengthy and painful, but all the more fitting for such despicable vermin.

SENTINEL UNDER FIRE

I find it unethical the amount of advertising of PCBC bank on your website. Do you not agree it is wrong to promote commercial banking in such a way on a popular website?
Paul Thomas, Earth

The Sentinel used to be a true pillar of democracy, never afraid of pointing out the follies of our leaders and institutions. Lately, though, the Sentinel hasn't been putting the pressure on the City Council, the Academy, business, or even the PCAG the way it once did. Has the Sentinel lost its drive for truth with its publisher? Is editor Michiko Clark not courageous enough to seek out truth and injustice wherever it might be found? hard question, but ones I think the Sentinel needs to be asking itself.

Careful there, you'll get us ganging up on you. We'll show you *shakes fist*.

And Hawk, you need to edit it another time. I'll let you find where. Stop giving them punctuational mud to sling - we Cambridge students are perfect, perfect I tell you! *mumbles something about previously mentioned responsibility to protect the reputation of our college*

Are those letters genuine? I fully agree with the stoning of Oliver-who wouldn't-but the one by Paul Thomas is absurd.

I can personally attest to the genuineness of the first letter, which was written by none other then moi. But I can't speak for Mr. Thomas.

I completely agree, what Oliver did was terrible. How dare he assault at least five children? He should be ashamed of himself. This Ryan fellow sounds like a perfectly respectable person though.

Who else is thinking that either the poster of that letter or the Sentinel itself is in the pay of those 3rd Power twerps?

I can say with 100% certainty that I am not in the pay of those 3rd Power twerps. At least, I haven't been getting any checks from them or anything. 3rd Power, if you're reading this, could you please start sending me money?
