OK, so my boss just forwarded this link. We know that there's some logic behind it (I have a vague recollection of seeing a similar thing done as a magic trick), but if anyone can tell me how the hell they do it, then I think the entire office will thank you for it (there are current many screams of "oooooh" and "aaarrgghh how do they do it?!!" being uttered!).

Yer aways gonna get a multiple of nine when you do this particular math trick. If you look in the chart, you'll notice that all the multiples of 9 have the same symbol. Refresh the chart and the symbols appear to be shuffled randomly, but they're really not. The nines still all have the same symbol. heh.

Seriously, take a sample of ten numbers, and run them. You'll get a multiple of nine every time. That flash is set up so that each multiple of nine in the chart has the same symbol, which will BE the symbol you see when it 'guesses' it on the next step.

So, ya can't really cheat, because you cannot change the nature of those numbers. Smile

 		For the mathematically inclined:

Any two digit number can be written as 10X + Y where X and Y are between 1 and 9.

The site is asking you to do this:

Choose any two digit number: (10X + Y)
Add together both digits: (X+Y)

Subtract the total from the original:
10X + Y - ( X + Y )
= 10X + Y - X - Y
= 10X - X + Y - Y
= 9X + 0
= 9X

And since X = 1 to 9, then 9X = all multiples of 9 (9,18, 27, ... , 81)

The flash applet then just chooses a random symbol in every run and sets it as the symbol for all multiples of 9.

Few points before we go the trick.
1. think any number from 0-9 it will take u to the
symbol for 0
similarly think any number between 10-19 u will get
9
20-29 ---> 18
30-39 ---> 27
and so on... 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, and 81...

2. Pattern changes everytime u click on "try again"

Now here goes the trick.
u think of any DAMN number, it will take u to either,
0, 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, OR 81...
and symbols at these numbers r same... Very Happy

BINGO.. I CRACKED IT....

Please feel freee to throw any cross questions on my
explaination.

Only one question... whats the difference between your and krystyn's or Eshan's explanations? (second post on this page and last before yours) Except that not 'spoilered' it is the same math.? Wink
