 [meetup]Los Angeles... here we come

Rumor has it that there are people considering a trip to LA the weekend of Nov 19th. I can't quite figure out why just so many of us would be heading that way, but I'm sure we all have our reasons. I know, off the top of my head, that there are already a handful people planning to descend upon the city and I'm sure that number will grow in the next few weeks.

Edited/Updated (Nov 13):

We have officially hit mini-ARGfest status with what looks to be 25 of us (give or take a few) descending upon LA at various points over the weekend. Please check out the (wiki's LA Event page) and add yourself to it if you haven't already. I've edited and organized the page a bit more as plans have become a bit more certain. Friday & Sunday are still a bit up in the air (though we should confirm soon), so please voice your opinion!

Also, please send me your contact info (a private message here or in chat would be great) as well as your travel plans if you're comfortable sharing that info w/me. It would be nice to have all that info in one place so that if things get confusing when we're out there, we won't lose anyone Smile

Now for the original questions (and a few more that I've thrown in) and the answers as I know them so far:

Who's considering the trip?
Tons of people! If you haven't already, please add your name to the Wiki

Where should we stay?
LA is a very large area. The events on Saturday are in Hollywood. Most people coming in from out of town are staying downtown at the Omni, the Sheraton, and/or the Westin Bonaventure. There will be an after-after-after party on Saturday night at the Westin Bonaventure if that helps in making any decisions.

Cutting costs by splitting a hotel room?
Lots of people like to share rooms to cut costs. Though most of this has been done already, there might be a few still interested. Feel free to ask in this thread or, if you're uncomfortable posting such things in a public space, let me know and I can also ask around for you.

Sharing rides- cutting costs & saving a bit of gas
An OC Caravan is forming... contact HitsHerMark and/or ThaJinx about this!

Nothing as of yet from Vegas, SD, or SF... if anything comes together, it'll be posted here. If you're looking for someone from those areas, post and you'll probably get a bite or two!

Friday Night?
We'll be meeting for dinner at Ciudad which is not only fantastic cuban food, but located right near the Westin and Sheraton (where some are known to be staying). Right now, the plan is to meet around 6:30ish though I'm sure that some people would be up to meeting for a bit of a happy hour before hand (myself included!). Ariock & Krystyn get into LA at 7:00 and will, hopefully, be able to join us for a bit at the restaurant before me move on (if we move on). Some have expressed interest in seeing Harry Potter and getting a picture with Vic's hat outside of the Mann's Chinease Theater around 8 or 9 pm. Other's have expressed interest in hanging out and having more social/chatty fun and, perhaps, playing poker (I'll be bringing all my NY & Atlanta chips - so we can play w/them... woo!)

I would like to be able to confirm with the restuarant so that we can be sure to have enough seating and such, so please! if you're planning on joining us for food stuffs (even if it's coming in later or leaving earlier), let me know ASAP!

Saturday?
ohboyohboyohboy! this is gonna be a busy one! Details and such are on the wiki, but here's the breakdown (times and locations for some things are a bit tentative... please help us get the ???s worked out!)

11ish: Meeting at Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles for brunch
1ish: Head over to Hollywood Forever Cemetery for Lucky's Graveyard Games
4ish: Head over to Lucy's El Adobe Café (right by the cemetery)
7ish: move elsewhere (one possibility being the Stinking Rose - though that might be a bit pricey for those doing the tight travel budget thing... any other suggestions?)
after-after-after party: Westin Bonaventure

Sunday?
Trying to consider people's travel times and desires here has been a bit difficult... especially as I don't know the area and driving distances! So, we'll do breakfast/brunch and then head on over to the Getty Museum & Santa Monica before most head to the airport (around 2:30ish). Those of us still around can continue to explore and then go to dinner somewhere.

YAY! Less than a week away! We're going to have an absolute blast!

Should we organize some sort of get together Friday Night?
Should we attempt to get hotel rooms relatively near each other (if not in the same hotel)?
Anyone from LA want to give advice on where/what to do for those of us that know little about the area and may be there longer?
Anyone looking to cut costs by splitting a hotel room?
Anyone looking for sharing rides from other areas (Vegas, SD, SFO, etc)?

Let's use this thread for figuring stuff out aside from the Graveyard Games and the afterparty which I'm sure will get it's own thread closer to the event.

I'll be down there for GenCon to visit a few friends. Here's to hoping the event is in Anaheim.
That said, I'm pretty booked up but am willing to help where I'm able.

Just got a call from my mechanic. The radiator was rotted out on my car. Also, a small oil leak.

So, when I see the invoice, I'll know a little better what's up.

Still 90% sure, with an extra 5% for some zeeg.

Yes and yes. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy One thought, however: Los Angeles is so sprawling, and traffic is generally so horrendeous, that it is entirely possible the PMs may end up holding the event at a cemetery that is a couple of hours away from whatever airport or hotel any given attendee selects.

On the other hand, since this means that there's really no such thing as a "central" location, you could take advantage of flying into and out of smaller airports such as Burbank, which is infinitely less unpleasant than LAX (in my humble opinion). And you could even plan where to stay based on proximity to what other things you'd like to do while in town.

To all those who are undecided: PLEASE come play with us! Consider: "yes" means chocolate; "no" means weeping puppies and kittens. Do you really want that on your conscience?

I've been saying since the game started that any event would be impossible for me, but a few hours of conversation last night led to a complete 180 on that.

I'm in on Los Angeles, no question about it.

I plan on coordinating the calls and such, too, to be sure to let me know good and early if you're going and want a contact, because the lists will be going out Thursday the 17th as opposed to Friday the 18th.

As I have stated before, I moved around my work schedule for TWO jobs (and agreed to work Thanksgiving weekend at the hospital) so I can have my hubby drive us to LA on Saturday morning.

Before deciding on a hotel, we really need to know WHERE in LA this event will occur. LA is a BIG place. If I was a betting person, I might suggest the cemetery from the opening sequence (was that identified for sure?). It seemed to have enough tombstones for a game.

I think that, no matter where the event is, people should think about getting hotel rooms near LAX. Expedia is having incredible deals on airport hotels for that Saturday: Marriott, Sheraton, and Doubletree from $79 to $109. If 2+ people share a room, it becomes an even better deal. If New York is any indication, we will likely end up in *someone's* room later at night anyway, and the airport is a nice centrally located place. Also, no matter where the event is, people are still going to have to drive to it (driving is the only method of transportaion in LA - walking/cab-ing is prohibited by law). So, we might as well look into putting everyone in hotels at least *near* each other, so that people that are doing the driving won't have to drive all over town to deliver everyone to their beds at night.

It'd be nice to know what cemetery the event is at, but in the end, I don't even think it will matter much as it relates to the activities afterwards. We should probably pick a drinkering place based on how cool/good/cheap it is, rather than based on how close it is to the cemetery. Because no matter where it is, you're still going to have to be driven to it, and then back to your hotel.

I would be willing to chip in for whatever room we end up getting for the hanging-out purposes on Saturday night.

I'm thinking about trying to make it out there, from Boston. I have a friend at UCLA that I might be able to stay with to save money, but I don't know yet.

I'm also scared of renting a car and trying to drive in LA from everything I've heard, but it would be necessary I think in order to get around. If people end up staying in the same hotel or ones near each other, there could be savings in groups renting cars together, rather than each person having a car.

The drinkering place has generally been suggested by Lucky in the instructions, yes?

Yes, Lucky (or his estate rep) identified drinkerin' places for afterwards, although FYI the DC destination was changed on the day (to some place a bit nicer).

I am endeavoring to ascertain a general idea of where in the mega-sprawl of LA this event will be held. I hope I succeed as this will help people plan where to stay and save money by getting lower fares.

I will post what I find out.

Seriously? What a strange place you live in.

Is there a reason for that, or do they just enjoy making pollution down in LA?
