[TRAILHEAD] edoclaundry.com-upcoming ARG mentioned in Wired

I'm not quite sure where this should be posted, as it involves both press coverage, news, and mention of a new game. Someone please move it if necessary.

On page 86 of the 12/05 Wired issue, there's a short feature on Elan Lee's upcoming clothing-based ARG. Article isn't online yet, but its short so just read it on a newsstand or at a library.

You buy the t-shirts, which have puzzles embedded in the designs. Solve them, and you unlock more story on the line's web site (www.edoclaundry.com).

I like the concept, but at $35 a shirt I don't think I'll be playing.

The shirts hit stores next spring.

EDIT - added topic tag - SG 3/22/06

I'll admit, I liked the whole idea of using puzzles on cards for "PPC". But this is just going a bit too far with the idea. I really don't like the direction this looks like it's going.

And I'm sure that the shirts will not be available in stores like the puzzle cards were, or else there would be a lot of people (myself included) who would simply copy down the puzzle that is on the shirt and then take it home with me to do. The only reason why I'd buy a $35 t-shirt would be if I was at a concert, and even then I'm a bit itchy on the whole thing.

Checking out the site I see it seems to be an US only thing (yet??)

Anyways, using tab on the flash, i seem to be missing a link or two to click:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

1st tab: edoc logo
2nd tab: Stores link
3rd tab: ???
4th tab: contact
5th tab: Laundry
6th tab: About
7th tab: My clothes tell secrets (leads to Laundry)
8th tab: ???
9th tab: (turn animations off)
10th tab: launch mobile site
11th tab: site by the squad
12th tab : url

where are the clicks for the 3rd and the 8th tab?

(empasis is mine)

For me, the puzzles are a major draw, but unlocking story elements is a little tiring (after ILB and LCP, i need a break). As for the shirts, i'd buy a polo shirt or a hat rather than a standard T-shirt.

This is more of a bizzare marketing ploy (i.e selling baseball cards with cigarettes) than an ARG, if the story's good and the shirts are readily available (site only lists Kansas City stores in Missouri, as you may know, I'm in St. Louis) I might join in.

$35 is extremely steep for a frackin' shirt. Unless this thing shows substantially more promise, count me out.

Dude, throw me a bone - at least put up some shirts that don't make me look like every other kid on Myspace these days.

That said, the Wired article did give some pretty detailed clues, and I wish I'd bought it last night instead of opening myself up for attacks from the aforementioned scene kids by going to the Album Leaf show...

And you have to admit, the shirts do seem to be of a pretty high quality , with different colors for every design (which both would jack up the price a little bit.) I realize that they need to make money to make more high quality shirts, but 20-25$ would be a better price range for this.

Hey, while I don't have much flow to buy some $30+ shirt, I would rather spend it on a company that (1) does have good designs. (I mean, whether it's your style or not, they're done well), (2) is supportive of the ARG lifestyle, and (3) has seemingly detailed puzzles. I mean, would YOU have figured out the paint drip thing.. honestly... Smile

So if I have the money, and a store opens up in the Midwest that carries it. I will definitely consider it. And I have NO PROBLEM with people making money off of good ideas. No one is forcing ANYONE to buy ANYTHING. It's a company with a gimmick for hip, but smart people. That's cool. It's better than many other shirts costing $35 bucks...

BTW, an ARGN article is forthcoming on the topic.

Well, considering that WIRED says straight out that it's an ARG, I think you're wrong there. I think the clothes may just be the rabbithole, as the story seems to center around a band.

Website here.

This is the first time apparel has been used to disseminate clues in an ARG; the games usually rely only on hidden messages in TV shows, movies, Web sites, faxes, emails or IMs. "Fashion as the story-delivery mechanism got me really excited," explains designer Elan Lee, who was also behind I Love Bees, the award-winning ARG used to virally market Halo 2. As players decode the messages in Edoc Laundry garments, an alternate world unfolds. Poor Richard, the band fabricated to provide a plot for the game, lost its manager. Can you figure out the circumstances of his death? We unraveled a few clues to get you started.

The blurb was written by Alex Handy, whom some of you may recall from the East Bay Express puzzle trail.

It may not officially start until January, but there are links up on the Poor Richard website...

core group of loyalists

I think the puzzles are also inside the clothes -not just the outside. So the photos of the itemsmay not be enough.

<opinion>If I would spend $50 on a video game, I would spend $35 on a shirt for a game. <opinion>

From part of 4orty2wo's webpage explaining "how we do it" - a couple of the steps they take to make a campaign:
Quote:
Kick-start the campaign with a core group of loyalists

I think, once again, we are the early adopters or the core group of loyalists, not the main audience for the game. Note: I view this as a high compliment, we already understand ARGs and their potential, so we provide a base for them to build upon in a campaign

Quote:
Intrigue with a low barrier to entry attracts growing audience

I am sure they will sell many many many of these clothes, if not to people on this forum, then to other people who will then, hopefully, find this forum and join the party.

But they don't want us to be unhappy so:

Quote:
Varying levels of complexity connect with variety of players

helps keep us intrigued and the game at a high level.

Dinner for two = $17
Two Movie Tickets = $15
Being able to look smart by explaining to college girls how to solve the puzzle on the your t-shirt = priceless

Okay, I'll bite.

Thanks a lot for clearing that up Very Happy I've been looking for the article on the Wired website and the magazine in the newstands, just haven't been able to find it as of yet.

Hopefully Poor Richard will be a semi-real band (I'm thinking of the DJ in Art of The Heist, his name escapes me) with decent music. Maybe one day it will be possible to make an ARG Music playlist.

Maybe EDOC will put up a little unlock link soon, specifically for Wired customers (and those who read Phaedra's great scan)

You mean Will Star, who is a very-real DJ, and a good sport in AoTH. Also known for providing music at our ARGFest Friday party where he became a beloved figure around here. Smile
