ok ppl, i just need some help on the puzzle here.

I have been looking at the article and i saw the following:

A phrase called ALL LIES that is highlighted
The one stream of liquid with little notches in it
The phrase Nothing to hide (supposedly the key)
The highlighted set on liquid streams underneath the loyalty logo thingymajobber

Well if Nothing to hide is the key, i was thinking of a vignere, but what would be the input?

anything to help me further?

greetz,

Draghkar

I think you misread a bit of the article (either that or I did). This is how I see it:

Quote:
Paint drips downward from each letter, and there's a scale with 26 hash marks along the left. Perhaps the length of each drip corresponds to a letter of the alphabet to make up a phrase?

Applying that key to the drip patterns along the belly of the shirt...

The key is the one paint drip with the hash marks. You can see it in Picture #2 - the hash marks are just visible. From there, you take the rest of the paint drips, match them up against the hash marks, and figure out what letter each drip represents. I'm guessing it would be just a straight substitution - no need to use Vigenere on the result. The Nothing to Hide is just another one of the Lies the shirt tells, since there is obviously something hidden in the paint drips.

Make more sense?

The 'call me a patriot' from the Wired article works nicely, I suggest everyone go try it out.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Five hours til Al's death: Jeff and Lyn(?) go milling about through Chinatown. Jeff really wishes all could come along, but Jimmy's sleeping off a hangover and Maddy's disappeared. So they run to Abby's hotel room and spot a 'Do Not Disturb' sign on the door, Jeff doesn't knock, then they go milling about Chinatown some more. Ends with a bizzare speech about how a band is only as good as the sum of its parts. Four hours left.

I'm obviously completly missing a link here or something. After studying this tread over and over again I can't spot it. Picture #2 from where??? where is this Clue?

Also clicking on that hidden link under the e. It says 'I wouldn't have put hidden images into all that clothing' or something to that effect and obviously the writter of that message is the killer of Al. So does that mean the killer of Al has something to do with Edoclaundry??

I'm sorry if i'm repeating things here, I've been reading this thread over and over again and may have been getting myself confused over nothing lol.

Go back to the first page of this thread. Scroll down to the post by Phaedra. Look at the attachment there -- it is a scan of the Wired magazine article -- beware, the scan resolution makes it a HUGE download.

That image contains four isolated close-ups, with hints along the side. Picture #2 is in the middle at the bottom.

Hi and welcome, Forgery. Smile

Glad you got the information you needed on how to solve the puzzle.

EDOC Laundry [EDOC anagrams to "code," in case you didn't notice] is the company that handles the band's merchandise.

If you go to the band's website, you'll notice that there's a link for "merch" near the bottom:

If you click that, it takes you to EDOC Laundry. So, presumably the clothing for sale there is not just cool-looking clothing with codes and puzzles hidden in it, it's fan gear for the band.

The girl in the flash video you get to watch when you enter CALL ME A PATRIOT on the site does not appear to be a member of the band. (You can look at the pictures of the band members on their site -- neither of the two female musicians are Asian.) The way the video plays out, it seems like she's the narrator, the one who killed Al, but it's way too early to tell that for sure. In any case, whoever killed Al is probably someone associated with the band, who is also involved in their merchandising, rendering them able to hide messages in the clothing.

That said, nothing is particularly certain right now because the game is apparently still in development. You may have read a post earlier in this thread:

Hey guys,

I tried so hard to sit back and not post about this, but I think a bit of background would really help out here.

We are THRILLED at the WIRED article, but the site/game/clothing really isn't quite ready for primetime yet.

We're still mucking around with character names, plot concepts, and site design, and didn't really think we'd be on display until early next year. (February, despite what the pretty pictures in the magazine say). In the meantime, please feel free to dig around the site and see what we've been up to, but keep in mind it's like finding our sketch pad rather than the final artwork.

Anyway, that was the long way of saying, EDOC - COMING SOON!

Elan

"aip" is Elan Lee, the guy quoted in the WIRED article about the clothes, and the designer of some pretty well-known ARGs (hence Dorkmaster getting all glassy-eyed and fanboyish Razz ).

So, what we're seeing is apparently still in development and may change.

Does it make sense now? Smile

It's not clear at this point how closely the clothing design is related to the band, but some initial thoughts:

The same logo, a quartered circle, appears all over the EDOC website, often with silhouettes of other figures attached to it:

The attached figures appear to be:

  • a stylized flame
  • a bull
  • a lightning bolt
  • a swallow
  • a...cloud? broccoli? Not real sure about that one...
  • a spade?
  • a butterfly
  • an eagle
  • a phoenix.

As a side note, the phoenix variant (if that's what it is...it's kind of small) appears for me whenever the Flash is loading a view of a new piece of clothing. I have no idea whether that's significant or just some sort of Flash artifact. (If it is a phoenix, though, considering what the phoenix represents mythologically, that's very interesting.)

Both the quartered circle and the silhouettes attached to it seem to be recurring themes throughout the graphics on the clothing -- especially the swallows. Perhaps they'll have something to do with either thematic material from the band's music, or cover art, or something?

As you'll note from the above screenshot of their webpage, the band's actual logo appears to be different -- a broken crown of sorts.

There seem to be some references to early American history hinted at, as well. "Poor Richard" evokes Poor Richard's Almanack, one of Benjamin Franklin's works (and the band released an album called Almanac; the missing webmistress' name is Lyn Folger (Franklin's mother was Abiah Folger); Allie Wayles' name (the new webmistress) evokes that of Martha Wayles Skelton, Thomas Jefferson's musically talented wife; and so on (huh, it'd be funny if they were actually the same person...).

Also, with code phrases like CALL ME A PATRIOT, E pluribus unum on one of the shirts, the eagles on some of the merchandise and so on, there definitely seems to be an Americana theme of some sort attached to both the band and the clothing.

Last, the names of the band's albums all seem to have a light theme: "broken halo," "arson for beginners," "indiglo," and "luminous."

But since it's in the early stages, all of this may, apparently, be subject to change.

Looks like we have to wait a bit longer than January for the full ARG to start.

Was this always there, or is it a recent addition? I don't think I've noticed it before.

See, now, I thought that might be the percussionist, Sam.

Holy cow. My first post and it's about clothes(which I happen to not mind so much), haha.

Anyway, something I noticed. Do you think that later, as the game gets started, they'll change the code entry window to where you can skip all the flash if you've already entered codes? It seems to make more sense than to have you wait through all of that mess if you already know what you're there for.

I sincerely hope that Nordstrom decides to hop on board with this, because it would make solving these things a lot easier.

Also, something I've noticed; the theme of these puzzles seems to be a bit easier than normal ARG related things(by this, I mean searching through source codes, deciphering message, etc.), so maybe it will open a wider audience then normal, and there will be a higher level of participation by totally random kids who get interested. It would be a great way to open new friendships, at least.

Anywho, that's just my two cents. I'm really excited for this though. Although I can't really afford the price of more than about three of those shirts, it would be fun to bring my digital camera into Nordstrom and take pictures of totally random merchandise.

Of course, that shirt was only a prototype/early stage shirt.
I suspect things are going to get harder.
There might even be things on the shirt that Wired missed (feasible, even for Wired).
I might be be totally off, but it's my guess.

Guess we'll wait and see...
