[UPDATE] Press Release, nov 17th

Looks like orbiconcorp is in a bit of trouble.

Quote:
November 17th, 2005 - Early this afternoon, Orbicon Corporation released the following statement:

"Despite every effort being made by Orbicon to restart negotiations with the Federal Government to find a way forward with regards to the deregulation of space exploration, the recent threat of a new investigation into the loss of several NASA satellites by federal agencies has left Orbicon with very little choice other than to revaluate its operational position. The continued interference in Orbicon's internal affairs by these organisations will not be tolerated and if they continue Orbicon will consider relocating all of its business to a location outside of normal US government jurisdiction.

Orbicon maintains its own internal affairs division and receives the majority of its funding through private investment capital via organisations such as the TEP Foundation or via technological partnerships with 'bleeding edge' research institutions; not from Government sources. It was with deepest regret that the Orbicon Board felt it necessary to take legal action last Friday to try and prevent the launch of another NASA satellite into geostationary orbit within the Orbicon controlled region of space above the Indian Ocean. Orbicon acknowledged that although on this occasion the legal action was unsuccessful, Orbicon will continue to maintain its zero tolerance policy against those opposed to the progress of mankind's exploration of space for all people rather than the rich elite.

It is with still further regret that Orbicon acknowledges the loss of a fifth consecutive NASA satellite in this region of space. However, Igor Bronco would like to personally wish NASA every success with it continued space shuttle and space station programs."

What are they doing to NASA's satellites and why?
I'm gusseing we will find out.

Well, it seems that NASA satellites are being launched into Orbicon controlled space. At least, that's what Orbicon's story is. It sounds to me like since their legal action against NASA failed, Orbicon took action to ensure NASA's satellite was "lost in space".

The question is, are NASA satellites simply getting too close to the Orbital Colony or is something else going on?

Well, the way I read it is that what Orbicon is doing is illegal, or there is something not totally above board, and a NASA enquiry would probably end up with Orbicon being shut down completely.

Just my two cents

I think this might have something to do with the asteroid that the contest was about. I think that the only people that know about the space colony and the asteroid at the moment are us, Orbicon, and whoever runs C.A.R.T.S., PBTE, and the inept site (this is just a short list). It might be that Orbicon is interfering with NASA satellites to keep everything quiet because at the moment, it seems that the space colony is highly illegal. Though I don't see how they can keep it so quiet. How can anyone miss a big ass space elevator?

And now that I've embarrased myself. I'll go back to lurking.

Umbra: first of all, by all means don't go back to lurking, because a lot of plot development needs speculation of the kind you posted to develop and be discovered. Besides, speculating can be a very pleasant passtime Wink

Having said that, the way I see it is that the Space Colony is not a secret, but, rather, Orbicon has made quite some noise about it in the form of promotional videos, a competition and public ribbon cutting ceremonies, etc to promote the space colony as A Good Thing.

This however led to quite a few protest groups, like The Inept and CARTS, who see the Space Colony as a bad, even unnatural, thing.

The conflict Orbicon seems to be having with NASA is basically "who controls (parts of) space?"

I called it a secret because I guess I've been expecting more from the Press section of their site. It doesn't seem like anyone's talking about it, even after the ribbon cutting.

i was thinking it was a public secret too, the newsletters - password protected from the public - and for internal use it seems (classified ads) - mention the stress that the colonists are under having to keep it a secret, but that soon all will be revealed.... Perhaps the other organisations are against the idea of a colony... wont they be suprised when they realise theres already one up and running!

I don't believe it is a secret anymore. In this post, Arne outlines the email he recieved from Davina Bronco saying:

So it seems pretty clear the company has gone public
