[ANNOUNCE] The Lost Experience

I just came across a link to this "announcement" for a Lost ARG, sponsored and run by ABC. I know they've had some experience in the past (Alias), but I have to say it doesn't seem like this announcement is very informative at all. I'm also kind of irritated they didn't mention anything about the Metacortex ARG that went on a couple of years back, and was (in my opinion) one of the most successful ARG's of all time. Anyway, check it out.

So wait... they're launching the ARG in England and Austrailia? Isn't it an American program?

Any game that manages to finish without imploding completely is a success in my book. I think the point of mentioning Bungie is that there is a company behind it that is making the experience as opposed to a "grassroots" (i.e. no real corporate tie ins even if the game may be considered fan fiction). In which case I am surprised that 4orty 2wo wasn't mentioned for the ARG that tied in to the release of GUN.

But then it may just mean that Bungie was hired by ABC to produce the ARG.

What? Why do you think Bungie would be hired by ABC to produce this? Wouldn't the interactive team currently working on a number of (all of?) the Lost sites be a more likely candidate? (and, I'm not talking about the former fanfiction thing... I mean the official Lost sites)

I'm not surprised that they didn't mention Gun. They weren't going for a comprehensive ARG history. I don't mention Gun/Last Call Poker when talking to a general audience that likely doesn't know much about ARGs. I usually mention the Beast and get a blank stare and then say "or I Love Bees" and get the "oh! yeah! I heard about that... that's cool!" It had a much larger audience and broader appeal in certain circles - the sort of circle that I would think of as readers of Gizmodo.

Oh, and just cause I'm already replying... I also think it's time that we raise the bar a bit from not imploding = success. I'm sorry. Sure, coming to a conclusion is a good thing and I'll not knock the effort that it took to get there. But I don't think that some little half thought out game that barely engaged its audience and, yet, managed to not implode should be considered a "success" and shouldn't be ranked with games that were a true success. I guess I just think that we should hold ourselves to higher standards than "WOO! We finished!"

This type of experience is more commonly known (at least to nerds) as an alternate reality game, or ARG.
I take mild offense to that. I much prefer dork. It rolls off the tongue much more panache. I'm sure the game will be good though with ABC sponsorship. I've only seen a few episodes but it reeks of ARG potential. Have fun!

So this is kind of official now?
That's awesome. I love Lost, and think it's the perfect candidate for a show for an ARG. Plus, it has the perfect fanbase (curious, intelligent, creative, etc.)

I look forward to getting involved with this one.

Luke, you hit the nail on the head. If getting involved in the show itself and theorizing isn't fun enough, imagine an ARG! I'd definitely be in!

I read somewhere, can't remember it off the top of my head, will try and find a link, that bigspaceship who did the first season official sites was dropped by ABC. Gonna try and find the link to that quote.

The producers mentioned in their March 28th podcast that there would be an "internet experience" launched in May "between the acts" of a Lost episode. My bet is a fake commercial with coded information or a website address. Widmore Labs, anyone?

Also, here's an interesting article that connects the Beast to Lost.

http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2005/10/23/whos_running_the_show/

I've also seen a very interesting theory that the plot of Lost may be that Lost itself is an ARG (or an ORPG-- I guess you couldn't call it a MMORPG) with the castaways as players and Dharma, The Others, and perhaps even Rousseau and Fhenry as NPCs or PMs.

For those who were unaware...

There is already a thread about lost, not only the show in general but any pending ARG, here in news and rumors... Personally, given that we have been discussing the pending ARG there, as well as the fan sites, hoaxes, and whatnot... I am going to cross post to here... But may i politely request from a mod one thread not two? {pretty please with a big tub of dharma ranch dressing on top}

{edit - just to specify, i was not requesting a lock but a merger... but it is not a big deal, i NEVER meant for it to really come off as a such a big deal...}
