I've been playing on a mono speaker TV with RF video up until I got my 360 and the VGA adapter.

Now I am on my LCD monitor with 2.1 sound (I have a 5.1 setup on the computer that shares the monitor, but it doesn't accept optical input Sad the price I pay for cheapness i guess. )

Fugitive,
Go to your local radio shack and get one of these. It should help with your problem and you can hook up your surround sound. It's also CHEAP Smile This is what I had to get because my speakers didn't accept Optical inputs also.

Hmm, well like everything audio plugs into the back of the subwoofer on my system, and the only 3 inputs are for Front, Rear, and Center. As of now I have the Red/White analog audio cables into a 2.5mm or whatever converter, and that is plugged into Front audio.

There is no place to put a Optical cable into the subwoofer.

My sound card on my PC (i think the problem is this speaker system was made for PCs) has front, rear, and center outputs, so it utilizes the full power of the system.

It seems you have speakers that could work on a 5.1 system, buy you don't have the Dolby Digital Decoder, whic is part of a home theater receiver. This decoder accepts the digital signal from xbox/360 via optical, decodes the dolby digital signal and distributes to the speakers in 6 independent channels.

Theoretically, you could be able to connect the decoded signals from the receiver to your subwoofer and then to your speakers. It depends on various factors. You'd need a receiver that has 5.1 output and what kind of connections you have on the subwoofer. It seems your subwoofer has 3 mini-jacks (headphones connector) like most PC speakers have and all receivers use RCA jacks. Plus, I'm not sure if your subwoofer has 1 rca jack for subwoofer signal, if not, you'll lose the .1 part of the signal. Some PC speakers don't have that, so the way they work is that the subwoofer filters lower frequency sounds from the the other speakers before sending them to them. So, you might need a lot of fancy adaptors. IMO, not worthy!

Creative had a box that would act like a receiver, without amplifiers. But price was not that attractive! If you want real 5.1 I'd suggest you get a cheap HTiB(home theater in a box) like Lois did. It'll be plenty enough for gaming and should do a reasonable job for dvd's. You can still use these on your PC, just connect an optical (or digital coax) from pc card to the receiver. Most sound cards have optical nowadays.

Yes, I'm a home theater geek. Hope it helps.

You'll need three cables and the above converter that I showed you from radio shack to make this work correctly.

1)Optical cable to run from your HD AV cable to the converter that I showed you from radio shack.
(probably the most expesieve part right here)

2)Coaxial audio cable

3)Converter from Coaxial to the 2.5mm input of your computer speakers.

Sounds like a lot converting but I get excellent sound quality out of my speakers and I have this same set up.

Grifter, he needs a dolby digital decoder. This converter you're showing, only converts analog stereo sound to digital PCM sound. It won't be true 5.1 sound. You need the dolby digital decoder somewhere in the setup. Optical transfer sound digitally. It can be PCM stereo sound, like you'd get from a CD player, for example or 5.1 encoded dolby digital, from a dvd player or the xbox.

I like, have some tuner from an ex-bf and some, like speakers? and then? I like, connected them all together so sound comes out?

I just turn it up louder when I really want to hear you people die at the behest of my pretty stickies. SURROUND SOUND IS WHEN IT'S LOUD, RIGHT?

Sometimes I play with my back to the TV, looking in a mirror. That way, when I inevitiably get shot in the back the sound is appropriatey placed! Man, modern technology amazes me.

More volume and mirrors not withstanding, you probably need a cheapo home theater system. Fortunately, they go on sale for less than $100 all the time. Watch this thread:

I was all happy yesterday that I finally got the Black Pearl Cluster on Hexic, then I saw this incredible hexic picture, and it brought me back to reality! This guy is just incredible!! I'll try to work my way to get the Grand Pearl Poo-bah now ...

I spend way too much time on live arcade games ...

Y'know, I've been seeing people play Hexic and other games that they offer at MSN Games -- the other day I think I saw someone playing Zuma?

How the heck does the controller translate to this format, when those particular two games seem so mouse-dependent?

That would be me. I have Zuma as well. Honestly, I never played Zuma on a PC, so I had no idea it was mouse-dependent! It works pretty well with the controller! You use the left stick to "aim" the balls. There's a line showing where the ball is going to end up. It's the only game my wife plays right now ...

By the way, I didn't know they offered hexic on MSN games. I thought it was exclusive to the 360.

I just reserved myself Battle Field 2 for the 360, anyone else planning on getting it?

Xbox 360 is getting released in NZ next week. I'll be getting mine on the Thursday of launch. I've already got Perfect Dark Zero but I don't know what other games I should be getting.

As far as awesome games go, from what I get from talking to the people that have their hands on it Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is wicked. The graphics are awesome and the game play kicks ass. The only thing that you need to keep in mind though when you're playing any Ghost Recon games is that it's very slow paced and you need your team to survive. So if you like a slower, more tactical then Halo 2 GRAW is for you.

Games that I've personally played that are good but not HOLLY F***ING HELL good are PGR3, Burnout Revenge, Call of Duty 2, and (you already have it) Perfect Dark Zero.

Lastly, the one game that is fun but I'm not overly addictive to is DOA: 4.

Burnout Revenge: If you have the Xbox version of it's really not worth getting the 360 version simply because their basically identical except for a "gulf swing" type thing in crash mode that determines how well of a start you get has been taken out and you get the perfect start every time, they've added 10 new crash junctions, and the graphics are a million times better then the Xbox version.

PGR3: It's a very fun racing game and the graphics are wicked. If you like racing games I suggest this one to you. If you start with a lower ranked car its easier, and cheaper, to get used to the way the games handles then if you where to use the fastest and most expensive of the bunch. I, with the suggestion from Syst (Regnevah), started with the D class TVR Sagaris. Just keep in mind though, the Nurburgring has more than 100 tunes.

Call of Duty 2: It has an awesome single player that'll take you about a week to finish on Veteran, that's also how you get all of the achievements. The graphics aren't really up to par when it comes to Next-gen but they are good. Put it to you this way they're better then Halo. The only major downfall is the Multiplayer. You can't create a room, you do a search for a room of the game type that you want to play, join it, hope that your friends can get in before it automatically starts, hope it doesn't lag you all to hell, and then once the game is finished the room is ended and you start all over again. Now what's going to go on with this I'm not entirely sure but apparently they're coming out with a patch for it that is supposed to improve multiplayer but I don't know what the improvements consist of.

Perfect Dark Zero: It's a very fun game but you'll have to get used to it if you've played Halo for a long time. It has basically no auto aim unlike Halos sever auto aim. So it is a little harder to get used to but once you do it is an awesome game. The single player is fun, and on Dark Agent it's painfully hard, but the story lacks a bit. It's not painfully bad it's just not outstanding. The multiplayer kicks booty though. You have multiple game types to choose from, and as you should already know a built in Zombies variant which I enjoy. The only thing that gets on my nerves is the achievements bug that doesn't give you your achievement when you have earned it. What I mean is, for example, I have over 1000 kills with a weapon called the Viblade, it's a sword, and the only way to get kills with it is to melee someone with it. There's an achievement for 1000 melee kills and I haven't gotten it. This problem has mostly been noted in the larger achievements, such as the 1000 melee kills, 1000 sniper kills, 1000 head shots, and so on though it has also popped up in smaller ones like 100 deathmatch games played. To wrap up for PDZ it's graphics are good, they're not up to PGR 3, Burnout, or GRAW but they are significantly better then Halo and COD 2. The character modles could be better but this game was originally going to be for the Game Cube so I let that slide because the environments are awesome to look at.

DOA 4: it's a fun game, I don't regret buying it but it's just a basic fighter. Its environments are awesome and the characters look good. It's gameplay is good as well it's just it gets repetitive after playing it a few times. So for replayability it's not all to good. Over all though it is fun, you just need to be really into fighters to get sucked into this game.

Enjoy! Mr. Green

Um, wha? The golf launch is in the xbox version of crash events. The difference is a lot of new XBLive functionality including sharing runs with friends and persistent relationship tracking.
