[SOLVED] Orange #56: Gravity This is a Perplexcity Firebox special Christmas card
If all these balls are released at the same time, which track will see its ball reach the finish line first?
I'm working on configuring the image down to correct resolution
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Its 4
*edit*
They've split the image file into just about as many as they possibly could, this could take a while...
*edit*
Do I have to get it down to 60 dpi?
Their licence says its only got to do with physical product
This is an image that I've been sent by Firebox that afaik is larger than that, but then again its in an email, so its not entirely "physical" is it?
*edit*
Down to 60dpi
Sorry guys, no reverse side to this one.

Oh, and can I just say...
yippee! I'm 3rd!
Until everyone else opens their firebox email...
In case you didn't get it, it came through as a firebox newsletter explaining the game.

Perplex City is a treasure hunt, but it's also a game, a story and a series of interlinked puzzles spanning the world. There's a £100,000 prize for the first person that cracks it. Confused? You will be.

Still with us? Good. To get started on the mystery you'll need some
puzzle cards.
Some of the cards contain secret information that will help you with the deeper mystery, but others are standalone puzzles that feature everything from mazes to optical illusions.
Solve these puzzles and you earn Perplex points at perplexcity.com
Here's an exclusive puzzle card (not previously available) to
get you started:

Once you've solved it, click here to visit perplexcity.com and sign up to enter your answer.
You'll be prompted to enter the UNIQUE ID from your card (yours is circled in red on the puzzle above) and your answer. Assuming you get it right, you'll make your debut on the Perplex City leaderboard.
To hasten your advance up the ranks, you'll need to get hold of more cards or if you're really keen, buy the ultra rare ones on ebay...
...Good luck!

Actually this was sent to an email address that I haven't bought PPC cards with, my normal account hasn't received that mailer yet...

I've signed up for the newsletter under 2 different email accounts (only buy through 1 of them), and never even received an email confirmation for signing up, let alone any newsletters. I just signed up again and am still waiting for the email confirmations.

Only ever recieved 2 newsletters off them, todays and 1 about that really nice looking hard drive PVR thing (hmmm wonder if my money will stretch for one of those....)
To be honest I thought I had opted out of the usual things of third parties and newsletters etc. Good job I was wrong!

for those of us who are interested in learning things as well as just wanting a quick answer to stick in the solve box, may i ask why you came to the answer you came to? I thought it might be that one, but I have no rational reason for thinking that, because I have no idea how you would go about working this one out.
Cheers, rach =)

I got that, too, though no points (don't own the card), and I think I can explain how I did.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The first is a no-chance deal (I mean, look at it ). Four's steep gradient lets the ball gain speed from the get-go and power through the straight part at the bottom better than slopes two or three. Two just rolls, building up slower, and three is just a weaker version of four. So, 4 it is.
I think.

my 2 cents got it right 1st time using reasoning below and a bit of guesswork.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I took the position that the ball that accelerates the fastest would finish first. not very scientific I know but it worked for me.

Basically I took the theory of potential energy converted into speed.
Route 1
It had a relatively slow increase in speed due to its short gradient, then no acceleration at all as it reached the flat area and then a sharp increase at
Route 2
A steady increase in speed from top to bottom
Route 3
High increase in acceleration at the beginning due to the drop in with acceleration dropping off as it reached the bottom of the ramp.
Route 4
Sharper acceleration than 3 at the beginning due to increase in the curve before dropping off towards the end
Basically all routes theoretically would have attained the same speed by the time they reached the bottom of the ramp, the only difference would be which one would have hit that top speed first or the one that got closest to it the fastest, by having the fastest initial acceleration.
Or is my logic mistaken?

No mistaken logic there - Acceleration due to gravity!

The only ohter thing to bear in mind is that the paths are not identical lengths, although assumably they are negligable.

Not negligible route 2 is direct and will be quite a bit short than any of the others, and 4 is almost certainly the longest distance, but the acceleration makes a bigger difference.

I got the firebox online version of this so I've solved it, but I had a copy in a pack I bought today too.
I wish to keep the physical card myself for the collection (there isn't a map on the back), but I am happy to freely PM the code at the top the card to allow someone else to solve it if anyone is interested???
I'll give it to the first reply that requests it!
