Excellent and differently lethal because...?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
My organic chemistry's rusty, is it actually chiral? I thought it had to have four unique groups attatched to a carbon? Anyway, maybe because it's poisonous, but we eat it anyway as a food additive

Well, I had started looking at carbon but I was following a hydrocarbon route.

*sigh* wrong track again *sigh*

Anyway, and more importantly, congratulations on the solve guys! Rock On

Hmm.

As lethal things go it's not very. (Having worked with it in fair sized quantities for my project last year and still be somewhat alive.)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
BENZOIC ACID:
ACUTE EXPOSURE- Large doses may cause sore throat, gastric pain, nausea,
vomiting, and possible allergic reactions. A 67 kg man ingested 50 gm
without ill effects.
CHRONIC EXPOSURE- A daily intake of 4-6 grams produced no toxic effects
outside of gastric irritation. Larger doses may have systemic effects
similar to salicylates and may include disturbances in acid base balance,
tremor and convulsions.
-MSDS data

And Mikeyj is right in that it is not chiral.

There must be a better underlying reason as to why its the answer, and the hints are relevant. (Other than matching the pattern). I would presume.

If anyone has one, i would be interested in knowing. Very Happy

Well done on the solve though.

Well Done on the solve,

Maybe the 'differently lethal'
was simply a rough way of pointing us towards
'x-ray diffraction', and nothing more.

Heh, I'd tried salicylic acid on a whim too Wink

Nice one hturan, did you get it through installing that program that you mentioned? Would have installed it myself, but it was Mac only... Very Happy

Hmm...now do I beat my head against Reimann, Shuffled or Ciphers...(barely even understand 13th Labour Very Happy)

Oh, and iirc Benzoic Acid is used as an anti-microbial preservative in food, and I believe it's used topically in vetinary medicine as an anti-fungal.

At least it does form monoclinic crystals...so I'd read something right Laughing

There is a pc demo version, but it doesn't draw diffraction patterns for me Sad

Astounding work to hturan and First Step!
And to think, in front of us this whole time.

Polar, Angel's Key, and now this. We're overtaxing ourselves, it seems.

Ah well, another step forward, another small victory for us!
Huzzah!

(This'll make an excellent holiday gift for the big guns who aren't back from the holiday yet, now, won't it? Laughing )

Is the leaderboard updating for everyone? I just have 2 at number 1 on mine, but I'm fairly sure there are more.

As far as it being the answer, i immediately thought of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, because benzoic acid was one of three ingrediants in "The Dip" that could kill a cartoon character.
The other two were acetine and turpentine.

Fantastic! Thanks goodness, no more waking up at 5am pondering.

The annoying thing is that I was playing around with the idea of the middle bit being a benzene ring back on page 9, but went far too complicated, an got side tracked with the lethal bit... bugger...

Marvellously well fantastically done though!!! Very Happy
