Thanks everyone! The program was only for Mac (it seems). Now who wants to try Riemann?!

Drat! I downloaded that program and looked at the sample file, but I didn't know enough about how the diffraction pattern was produced to recognise it

Hmm...just thought, can anyone see any relevance at all for Von's hint?

Dunno if anyone noticed, but the 2nd molecule on #211 is very similar. Might have been enough of a clue on realising that the pattern is a planar molecule.

I need a little help if someone would be so kind to break this all down for me.

I know the answer (due to rummaging through the rest of this thread) Sad my own fault dammit

What I had worked out prioir to that was the crystallography thing, x-ray diffraction and that we are looking for a potentially poisonous molecule (not an element)

I had found a list of potentially lethal substances that are monitored in the uk and among them (and all pretty high up) were benzene related substances, from that via wikipedia I did find the answer but I didn't relate that directly until I read here that it was correct.

So anyway, I figured the mirror thing was the to do with mirroring either one half or two halves of the image to get the full molecule/crystal (not sure not done it yet)

But from what has been said earlier there does not seem to be a way to get the answer without owning a MAC? and I can't find a list of diffraction images to match up to.

Was it just a case of pure luck and guess work? or is there a way for those of us without access to a mac to get the answer? or is it just blind luck and guess work?

Windows version

Not that it matters much now, probably, but there is a Windows version of the Single Crystal software now: http://www.crystalmaker.com/singlecrystal/download.html

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The answer is also contained in the example files (don't know if this was the case before, and I'm too lazy to re-read the whole thread again).

And while I'm here, I feel like this card is similar to Master of Secrets. Basically you solve it by knowing someone who is a PhD in the field and has access the the high falutin tools needed to really figure it out. Although at least with this card there was a chance of getting the answer with a lucky web search. Confused
