I tried to think about this laterally. Didn't work. So having read the thread with the mention of cyanide I thought that perhaps it could have something to do with old ways people tried to kill one another.

I tried:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Glass, powdered glass, crushed glass

It didn't work - I'm very tired so I realise that I'm thinking in loops. Random fact: Woman who used to powder their faces to make them look paler actually used an arsenic-based powder. I'm talking a while ago.

This one's gonna annoy me as much as the Montgreen card - it's ringing a little bell in the back of my brain but that bell doesn't seem to be attached to anything.

It couldn't be
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
salt
could it?

Few more of my fails for you Wink

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Plutonium, Xrays, X-rays, Mercury Chloride, HCN, Hydrogen Cyanide, KCN, Arsenic Disulphide

From the symmetry of the x-ray diff pattern I'd say it's likely to be a monoclinic crystal structure (it amazing how much more physical chemistry I know now that a week ago Wink ) which is where I got hold of
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
plutonium - which I thought went well with differently lethal, but nevermind
also all of the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
arsenides
seem to be monoclinic, but it seems very harsh that we should have to go through all the different
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
arsenic salts
in order to get the right one.

Just thinking out loud here but.....couldn't a "Hall of Mirrors" be described as a "Silver Maze"?

Given that some of the silver cards come from the "Silver Maze" set, perhaps there's something more in the cards that we need to give us a clue to this one.....that might explain Von's clue - maybe.....

Having gone with the mirror clue, I have come up with the following:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Some mirrors are made of aluminium oxide or alumina and also types of aluminium (rolaids, amphojel, and maalox) are a group of antacids which people ca be allergic to. They produce a toxicity and have been linked to Alzheimer's disease

Also on a lighter note, The Hall of Mirrors is a room in the Château de Versailles and many references of it are in Marie Antoinette's diary. Which lead me to the answer: Cake. or Ego. Neither of which seem likely but I thought that it was mildly amusing.

Has this been tried?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Cocaine - as I have seen in the movies they put it on glass and cut it into lines with a mirror or something along those lines? It can be deadly? I'm an innocent person so I don't know a lot about it. Never done it - never wanted to.

I also found I quote from the wiki again rather amusing:

Quote:
Mirrors, along with labyrinths, figure prominently in the work of Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, who often used them as symbols of infinity, impersonation, and illusion. In The Zahir, he writes of fearing that his reflection would move independently or change shape before his eyes. In Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, a fictional heresiarch declares that "mirrors and copulation are abominable, since they both multiply the numbers of men."

Anyone want to input copulation? Laughing

Finally, going on with my previously mentioned theory:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Salt or sodium chloride or ediable salt - a little is good a lot is bad.

I'm locked out until 9pm and I have my works Christmas party tonight - but if anyone wants to elimate some of the possiblies I have listed above - knock yourself out.

Bang Head

Under controlled laboratory conditions I have tested the resulting material produced from scratching off the silver panel from this card and a random sample (mostly Whipsmart Wordsearch, why, why so many?) of other cards.

These concoctions were then fed to a series of volunteers who were monitored 24hours a day and the effects of the samples on their health observed.

The participants on the placebo silver panel samples reported no change in health, whereas those on the #248 silver panel samples keeled over and died within hours.

So ladies and gentlemen, I present you with the answer. The card is indeed differently lethal!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
**NOTE** The above accounts may or may not have actually happened. And even if they did, rest assured that no test subjects were harmed in the testing out of this theory. In fact the only comments reported were along the lines of, "hmm, tastes a bit like chicken".

But i'd wash my hands after using this card, just in case! (Remember the 3rd Power are everywhere! Very Happy )

Well, my fails today are:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Alas, SALT, SODIUM CHLORIDE (I'm now stricken with doubt over how I spelt Sodium) and ANTACIDS. Boo hoo.

Well tomorrow is another day.

Sigh

Still stuck on the common cold but don't have the card so...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
searched for rossmann and found no posts
http://news.uns.purdue.edu/UNS/html3month/02SUM.PERS.Rossman.html

"Rossmann is widely recognized for developing X-ray crystallography techniques to study particularly small molecular structures, such as viruses."

Try Michael Rossmann?

"In 1985, he became the first scientist to build a model of human rhinovirus-14, HRV-14, one of about 100 known cold virus strains."

Possibly HRV-14

"Fellow group member, Richard Kuhn, who worked with Rossmann to map the first flavivirus, the lethal dengue virus carried by mosquitoes, says Rossmann's intensity and sheer fondness for his work are constant positive influences on the scientists around him."

Flavivirus perhaps

or from http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/health/HealthRepublish_815943.htm

"The U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta said the virus causing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome - an atypical pneumonia that has caused at least 17 deaths around the world - was from the Coronaviridae group, rather than a Paramyxoviridae family as previously suspected. "
"Coronaviruses belong to the two main types that cause common colds, which also include rhinoviruses. First isolated from chickens in 1937, there are about 13 species known in the Coronaviridae family, which infect not only humans and birds, but also cattle, pigs, rodents, cats and dogs."

Coronavirus

So if someone could try these.....

I've been watching this thread for a while now, but never had anything to contribute, as my chemistry/physics stopped at O level - and was many years ago Smile

Is it possible that an answer would be so complex, that only a handful of the world's top scientists could get it? Could it not be a sideways step in thought, and much simpler?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
aluminium oxide, alumina, and diamond

Fail. Fail. Fail.
