Am getting nowhere with Antarctica, so think that will try somewhere else. doesn`t help that coordinates are different on different sites for the same place!

Did find a brilliant map of the area, and an index for cross referencing: http://ortho.linz.govt.nz/antarctic/ but has got me nowhere. The map file is large, and the site recommends that you save it rather than opening it, but its the best I have seen yet.

I've had a reply from a nice Dr Clarkson at the Scott Polar Research Institute this is what he said;

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Thank you for your somewhat strange request that has been forwarded to me for reply.

I think the nearest named point that would correspond most closely with the coordinates you give will be "Turks Head" itself, rather than "Turks Head Ridge" which extends northwards inland from the Turks Head on the south side of Ross Island. It lies towards the centre of "Windless Bight" on the coast of the island. At this point on the coast it is the Ross Ice Shelf, rather than the sea, that abuts against the coast. So there is no open water hereabouts. I have not found a specific reference to Turks Head but the rock will almost certainly be volcanic, probably lava or ash from one of the volcanic centres to the north. There could be lichens and mosses on the rocks and probably a microfauna living amongst any mosses. There are no seals or penguins there but there may be some flighted birds that nest there. I cannot think of anything else likely to "lie here".

Now I should be glad if, in turn, you would enlighten me with the source of the question and the reason for asking it!

Don't think his answer to my query will be much help as I've already tried Turks Head Ridge and Turks Head.

Not sure really quite how to explain to him what I'm doing... 'spose I could send him some of my spare cards and see if he gets hooked!!!

Wink

It's GOT to be Mars. It's a silver, and if it had been 'Scott's Cabin' or something like that I think that wouldn't do a silver justice. I've put in a request to the nice people at FIMA (they co-ordinated the search for the Mars Polar Lander) to see if they have any more detailed info.

This is a highly random suggestion, and probably won't work, but has anyone tried:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
nothing

Wouldn't put it past MC to have that as the answer.

Still on Antarctica. the following page has a lot of interesting possibilities:-

http://aadc-maps.aad.gov.au/aadc/gaz/place_names_near_place.cfm?lat=-77.63333330&lon=166.81666670&offset=1.0&place_name=Turks%20Head%20Ridge

Fantastic list. Don't think anyone's tried tryggve point, but the other nearby names have been mentioned.
Clutching at straws, as they don't have the right coordinates, could try Ice Berg Tongue or Icecube Tongue from the telling lies angle or Mount Vision or Observation Hill from the you'll have to see it for yourself one.

Could it be!

Could this be something to do with polar orbits of satellites over antartica

or a star that lies above the co-ordinate mentioned on the card

lies here doesnt necessarily mean lie as on floor could mean lies above here.

Whilst this isn't amazingly helpful, could "What Lies Here?" mean what isnt telling the truth, or what isnt accurate?
Maybe something along those lines.

Then, maybe it's any of the following, assuming "lies" as in "misinforms":

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
map
compass
anti-tautologies (of course, they do that everywhere; (p V -p) -> (p ^ -p) )

a quick note, for those who weren't in IRC:

A rough reckoning says that these coordinates pin us down to a box that's roughly 3m(north-south) by 0.6m (east-west) (that's 10 feet by 2 feet for the yanks Wink)

So, uh, quite precise Wink

i've not worked it out for mars yet, but that'll depends on the relative sizes of earth and mars

(1) Alternate lines and 3's will get you within two steps
(2) Watch out for the special case! (3) /0
Is no-one gonna try this? Sad
