In response to my earlier post from Dr P. Clarkson.. I explained to him why I was bugging him with a set of lat/longs and the question "What lies here?"

He has replyed with the following;
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I can only think that the answer to the question will lie in one of the diaries of Birdie Bowers, Edward Wilson or Apsley Cherry-Garrard who made "the worst journey in the world" from Hut Point to Cape Crozier across Windless Bight during the winter of 1911 during Captain Scott's last expedition. Maybe they left a small depot there or something like that. If I find the time, I will consult the relevant accounts and see if I can find some ideas. In any case, I would be interested to see the answer.

I will do some research on these 3 characters and see what it throws up. Either way I'll post his reply if I get one. Confused

For the mars angle,I have found this site with the top 100 of the martian features, its about half way down the page:
http://www.mso.anu.edu.au/cas/southerncross/sc_200508.html
and also found that the region (if it is mars) we need to look at is called the Cryptic Region, which is 85S - 75S, and 150W - 310W.

Sticking with the earth based possibilities...

Just another avenue that might be worth investigation, what about there fact there might be a shipwreck under the ice at this location..then the phrase "What lies here?" fits quite nicely.

Anyway its just a thought Idea

Only problem with that is that the coordinates are most definitely on an island in the antarctic not ice.

Can you clarify with an image from a map that the coordinates are on land/island as the attached image definitely suggests they are not. What do you think?

Looks to me like it is on an ice shelf, which (this being antarctica) has probably got land underneath it.

The thing is that the lat / long from the map are described as approximate. Going from the SCAR Composite Gazetteer which I trust far more than an approximate reading from where I wave my mouse, the following places are at or around the lat / long given:-

77° 36' 00.0" S to 77° 42' 00.0" S | - 77.6000° to - 77.7000°
166° 42' 00.0" E to 166° 48' 00.0" E | 166.7000° to 166.8000°

Fault, The 77° 40' 00.0" S 166° 44' 00.0" E
Low Summit 77° 40' 00.0" S 166° 44' 00.0" E
Tech Crags 77° 37' 00.0" S 166° 45' 00.0" E
Turks Head 77° 40' 00.0" S 166° 46' 00.0" E
Turks Head Bay 77° 40' 00.0" S 166° 44' 00.0" E
Turks Head Ridge 77° 37' 00.0" S 166° 44' 00.0" E

OK, these are only to the nearest minute, but they are consistent between one another. These would put our location somewhere between Tech Crags and Turks Head. Looking at the attached map shows this has to be on Ross Island. That's why I think this point must be on dry land not ice.

Anyway, none of the data anyone has come up with even approaches that on the card (0.05 of a second compared to 30 seconds) and unless someone wants to actually go to the coordinates with GPS we aren't getting anywhere.

Are there any other suggestions? Looking up the coordinates, even if they are on mars or another planet doesn't seem like a silver to me, it was a purple for 6 of them on 179 - by another name, although they did have clues. I think there's something else we're missing.

Graham Hancocks believes that an advanced, lost technological civilization lies buried beneath Antarctica.

How's about the Lunar South Pole? There's been a bit of interest in the past considering it as a future landing site.

Reason being:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
there's been a lot of speculation about the presence of ice there which would theoretically allow for colonisation, in particular a region that seems to be known as the Aitken Basin Rim.

Whether this would be helpful I don't know.
