If you want to play, by all means do, but I'm not sure we should be rewarding PMs that break the community's rules. One of the punishments for breaking these rules is community derision

The only rule that we have is the TOS. I think that the TOS says that posting a trailhead will be ignored, but other posts by a PM are forbidden. I agree with the TOS and that a violation of them can't be ignored. But I thought the punishment was a warning from a site admin and a locking of a game or thread for failure to comply. Certainly players can and should object to this behaviour and, if they don't want to play the game because of it, they don't have to do so.

Quote:
The punishment, as vulva puppets have made clear in the past, is that we don't suffer fools gladly. Nor should we.

I admit that I have no idea about the vulva puppet episode. I must have missed that one.

I don't think that community derision is a necessary or helpful punishment - it certainly hasn't stopped people from breaking the rules or inspired them to create better games. I think the community pays a price for treating anyone, even a PM who dares to start an ill-conceived game full of spelling errors, with rude and hostile behaviour.

Anyone can make fun of a kid who is trying to make a little game and does it badly. These PMs make an easy, defenseless and undefended target. I am not sure why such vehement objection and derision is necessary or who it ultimately benefits.

I used to think these games were a detriment to the community, but I changed my mind. I haven't seen any harm caused by these games. But, I have spoken to people who see community derision of an imploding game as evidence of an egocentric, elitist and unwelcoming attitude. I don't think that attitude is the one this community wants to project.

If you don't like a game, post all your complaints to your hearts content - that is what we do. But community derision and shunning of a little harmless game seems unduly harsh to me and out of keeping with our usual standard of treatment of people.

I was going to rehash the old "if you're inexperienced, listen to/ask the old-timer PMs for advice" and "launch" discussions here, but they're covered here, here, here, and here, among other places in the "Meta" forum.

Guys, please don't make me branch this off into yet ANOTHER meta forum on the whos whys whens and hows of community and PM relations. We've been over it many times (such as Wolf kindly points out above).

If you care to continue a discussion on what behooves us all as good, kind, sweet people, then please, continue it over there in yonder Meta section where it actually belongs and let this thing die a pleasant natural death like it wants to.

/me has a sudden vision of boots whose soles leave ROTted text in the snow, tied with spaghetti, and runs off to plan an ARG.

I think (and this is how I avoid being off-topic hehe) that THIS game, specifically, continues in the face of blatant disrespect (due to the disrespect shown by it's PMs to the processes set by the owners and proprietors of this site) and due to this, humiliation is more necessary than a simple warning.

Let's be honest. This person had no other idea on how to start his/her game. They figured "well, I'll break the rules. What can they do? They'll say "you shouldnta dunnit" and then move on, right?" Well, while that may be true, the fact that you post as a player, and then, instead of posting as yourself to say "sorry, I'm new, ignore that, and please forgive my guffaw" you CONTINUE to post in character.

This blatant disregard of convention and standards set up NOT by the "powers that be" but by the players themselves, and the user community... well, I have no problem lambasting that in front of the world. It's idiotic, and even if this was a good game with a bad rabbithole, I'd still blast it.

Typically, on first infraction, I'd ignore the game, and allow the thread to die.

However, in light of the multiple breakdowns of, well, for lack of better words, observance of the community's wishes, there's no problem with fighting fire with gianormous flames to destroy the fuel quicker than the smaller fire can consume.

Anyway, yeah that's a rant, fully... But while I don't claim to be the ARG police, nor would I want to be... this is a SIMPLE TO FOLLOW RULE. And after seeing the reaction, the decision is made to CONTINUE to break the rules... well, that's just lame in all the lamest ways to be a lame-o. Lame. Fo'Shizzle, My Nizzle.

There's a real mob mentality around here occasionally. How about just locking the thread if it breaks rules, rather than grabbing torches and pitchforks? Dogpiles will give this community a reputation for snobbery and cliquishness.

I was just wondering, I've now seen you post under 5 different pseudonyms (Screwball, Rod, maxfranz, gazdemon and PM Anon). Two of those are registered accounts, so why not log in and post from one of those?

Just curious

Mods--feel free to delete if this blows your seekrit weapon:

phpBB forums let you view the IP number of registered users as well as guests, whether they post or not. Unregistered peoples' IPs are just as visible to admins as registered/logged in users' IPs are.

Which is one reason I LOVE using php for my forum, too.

Only those individuals who are moderators in the forum you are posting in can see your IP address. For example, I'm a moderator over in the Last Call Poker forums, so if you posted there, I'd be able to see it, but I can't see it here.

The site administrators can see your IP regardless of where you're posting, I believe.

That said, I assume Atrophied could tell that the same person was behind your numerous aliases because of the writing style of the posts. No magic tricks there -- just observation. Smile

Wait... so you know where I live?

/me starts running around in circles trying to find a place to hide. Realizing that his intentions are futile, he just curls up in the fetal position and starts to suck his thumb nervously.
