OMG: they are here!

Quote:
Thanks for the update...I think the first of the artifacts...a
pocketwatch...is hidden somewhere in New York..."You may search high and low, but to an old greek rebel you must look, for giving gifts to humans he did pay, so will Max if you do stray" I got that in an email from an anonymous stranger. I hope it helps you guys to figure out where the pocketwatch is hidden!

bagsbee - We must find the pocketwatch so we can control the awesome magical power of the force.

On a serious note - the first-- and only-- thing that comes to mind is the Sculpture of Prometheus in the Ice Skating Rink at Rockefeller Center. That was where we taked the players who came to the LCP New York Live Event!

Coincidence?

another email from rod - last for the night

oooh - Rod thinks I am right about Prometheus..

Quote:
I think that you are probably correct in thinking that the statue of
Prometheus is the location of the hidden pocketwatch...I shall go straight
to New York after I have done the business in Norway. I will be landing in
Oslo in 1 hour, I intend to get a room for the night, and then hire a car to
drive to the small fishing port town of Bergen. I shall keep you informed, I
will speak with you tomorrow. Goodbye!

Ok, the PM really does need to read over the rules more carefully. Because the PM is asked to not post in game at unfiction also means you shouldn't ask me to.

Worst of all you guys might think I am the PM..... Oh I hate that thought.

Golly gee whiz! An in-game mention! I am overwhelmed by the honor, Mr. PM sir, and I shall print out this post and clutch it to my bosom as I go to sleep tonight.

GAAAACK.

Okay, actually I won't, because if there's anything that annoys me more than poorly thought-out launches that insult the intelligence of the (highly intelligent) ARG community, and insult the example of every hard-working, creative, and bright PM who's launched a grassroots game before this, it's PMs who insult the intelligence of the community by ignoring the frickin' rules.

Oh sure, Mr. "PM," you cleverly avoided the prohibition on in-game posting by telling someone else to do it for you, but the line between breaking the letter of the law and breaking the spirit of the law is a distinction without a difference.

But clearly you don't care about that.

The rules are there for good reason. Let me spell it out for you in terms of self-interest.

1) Yes, we know you're reading the OUT-OF-GAME forums.

2) It's fine for PMs to read forums that are clearly labeled as OUT-OF-GAME. It's expected. It's fine for PMs to demonstrate that they're reading the forums by altering the game in keeping with the complaints/ideas/whatever of players. Again, it's expected.

When characters start reading the forum, and responding directly to comments made therein, it makes the forums in-game, which doesn't work.

You know WHY it doesn't work?

Because here, on these forums, we talk about games as games.

We point out that characters don't exist, we talk about the fact that they're being voiced by PMs, and a whole host of other real META issues that characters cannot confront, because if they do, they will have to face the fact that they are not real.

Yes, yes, I know you're about to say that you're being "innovative" or "creative" by "blurring the line" between reality and fiction.

You're not. Many PMs have tried to do it before you, with varying degrees of success. And it's been discussed, to death (here, for example, and here).

Ultimately, however, it boils down to two things:

1) Quite aside from whatever META issues may exist in treating an out-of-game forum as in-game, the good people who host and run this invaluable community resource have expressed, numerous times, that they wish Unfiction to remain out-of-game. To ignore their wishes is to disrespect them and the resource they provide.

2) There are good reasons for Unfiction to remain out-of-game.

The primary one is this:

Your characters are not real. Your game is not real. Putting them on an out-of-game (i.e. real) forum is, in essence, challenging them to be real.

They cannot meet this challenge.

Or, as someone who, I imagine, has thought about this issue quite a bit put it (and if you don't recognize this name, I guess it's just another indication of the research you should have done but probably didn't before precipitously launching your game):

Elan Lee wrote:
When players start challenging the notion of what is real and what isn't, it's a good thing in the sense that the players are trying to hack the system. (I believe that all hacking is the result of caring deeply about something, and wanting to interact with it on a very personal level.) It's a bad thing in that when made public, it forces the characters in the game to become "stupid". (Ignorant of an obvious fact pointed out to them by a large group of people and unwilling to address that issue.) When a player tells an imaginary friend that he's not real, that imaginary friend must either cease to exist or run around with his fingers in his ears yelling "La la la, I can't hear you, I can't hear you." ARGs have the same problem. If a player challenges it to be real, the ARG can not really comply. So it must either cease to exist or ignore the player.

Oh, wait, and I see that as I type this, you've decided to just go and break the rules blatantly by posting as a character.

The rules making Unfiction out-of-game are there, in part, to help protect your characters from having to make that choice.

But since you seem determined to force them to confront it:

Hi there, Max F.!!!

Lovely to talk to you directly, old boy. Did you know you're a character in a game? That's right, pumpkin, you're about as real as the Packers' chances of making it to the SuperBowl. So, whatever you think is going to happen isn't, really, not that you've given us much of a reason to care one way or the other.

So, there it is, pookums. You now have the choice of either ignoring/forcibly disbelieving what I've just told you, or disappearing. I'll pretend to wait with bated breath while you decide.

Love and kisses,

Phaedra

I think this site is new because I looked for it - albeit halfheartedly - earlier today.

I haven't had so much fun laughing in a game in a long time. I know the people in chat have been laughing out loud as well. Sometimes silly and fun is just silly and fun.

Not sure if I want to email Mike though - do I dare to reveal the location of the pocketwatch-- maybe I could trade that information for Max's safety?

Can somebody email Webbing, trying subtly to ask, where he lives and if it ends in ool, we know hes telling the truth. I would do it but my lack of ARG exp means I'm not too good at sending emails to characters without being too obvious

Forgery,

I think it is perfectly acceptable, in the (bad) form of this PM, to go ahead and email him and ask him directly. You can also mention the fact that there is no "P" in his "OOL" and you'd like to keep it that way.

Hey, I may have a job for you. But it needs to be worked in the upmost secrecy!! I have asked around a few other people who could do this 'job' for me. I need the information of where you live and how much it will cost for a simple 'job' May seem a strange request but the secrecy must be vital and for your chance of the job I need you to answer the questions for me. You seem to be advertising well, what with using feeewebs, so I'm hoping I can put my trust in you here.

Please reply soon

Thanks

Hold me, misery_of_pain, hold me like you did on the shores of Lake Naboo, when all there was was our love. Wink

*hides from Lou*

The people who say that to me always seem to be straight women. I will die alone. *sniffle*
