[UPDATE] quirkyacuity.com 28th November A brainwave

So, I was talking through this problem about getting hold of Granier's diary with Kurt over the weekend. A few of you have suggested that I could contact some author or other to try to get their help. I can't see it working, really. Whoever I contacted, I'd have to explain to them why I wanted the book, which would either mean inventing a legitimate research need (and if I had the evidence for that, the museum would let me look at the diary anyway) or telling them that I'm investigating a wacky secret society that I think might have something to do with the theft of the cube and whose tendrils have permeated Perplex City for centuries and no, honestly, I'm not crazy, why are you backing away like that?
But Kurt and I had another thought. There are quite a lot of you guys, right? I think the only answer is for you all to get together and *actually write a book*. It shouldn't be that hard; you could do a book of short stories or essays on "Earth life", or one long narrative if you like. I think that Seaside Press are looking for books on Earth, so I could be the editor, you could all be the contributors. I reckon if we get going, we should be able to produce a book really quickly, and even get it printed! Hey, I'm quite excited by this idea now!

Cool idea! EuroChris, you were on the right track. Okay. I've got short stories I can pitch in, can we get enough short stories together from other people to make this work? I think we should lock the previous two QA update threads and the Seaside Press one to focus attention on this thread. ForumMasters do you agree?

'Oddly', I sent an email to them last week saying:
Quote:
There is one thing that you might be able to help me with actually. I have half completed a book about earth customs and memorabilia and the strong links that there are to Perplex city, which a few publishers here on Earth are interested in. I would quite like to read a book in your museum library which would greatly enhance the quality of my book. If you were to help a good friend of mine read this book-which is only available to be read by published researchers-so she could collect the information that I need, I would, of course, offer seaside press first refusal to publish my book.
I was reading in the sentinel there was a current interest in Earth on perplex city and I'm sure it would be beneficial to seaside press to ride this current wave of interest. Are you on commission by the way?
Kind Regards
Chris
and got this reply-which now looks like quite a large hint.
Quote:
Dear Chris,
Unfortunately there is little we can do to help you with the Academy Museum since they are notoriously strict on giving access to the public. I understand that the reason behind their policy of only allowing published researchers in is to dissuade casual or frivolous inquiries, and a half-finished manuscript simply wouldn't do.
If the manuscript were completed, and it was published in Perplex City, then we could certainly credit your friend as co-author or research assistant. Naturally, we would then be happy to help you with approaching the museum for access to this book.
Yours sincerely,
Ellen Moriyama
I'll still be happy to collate all the short stories and articles that we have. I've got two stories and we'll need about 20ish. Also we'll need a one page synopsis which I'll do if no one else wants to.
chrismATcreamDOTorg. If we have any ready to send off.
EDIT: Don't worry it looks as though we have to send to violet directly.

A very good idea, it would only take a thousand words from fifty of us, each on a different topic to get 'an Earth book' together that fits the requirements of Seaside Press...if Violet wants to edit it, maybe she could suggest 50 topics and we can get cracking? Otherwise, someone just needs to coordinate the effort and we can be done in a couple of days?

Yeah, this is a really cool idea! So it's going to be about Earth Life, right... so we need like 20 different topics, probably. Any ideas? How about
- Nature
- Relationships
- Work
- Economy
- Weather
Any others?
I'll be happy to join in in this one.

I really like this! Maybe, following Rube2ks idea, we should set it up like a writing challenge. Most of the short story anthologies I've got are around a particular theme. We could pick a theme, and everyone writes a story or an article, 1000 words max (although I guess it doesn't matter if you go over, so maybe no limit).
How about the theme of 'Games'? Seems appropriate to Perplex City, and easy to write reports of your poker night or soccer tournament if you're not into the fiction thing.
I'd rather write something new than submit a short story I've already got - I was just about to send something to E_C then and got a fit of shyness...
[EDIT] sorry posted at the same time as Specterz. all of those themes sound good too! maybe it should just be whatever theme you fancy.

I've just sent her a mail suggesting that she might like to propose a theme for the book or topics for each story/essay or if she thinks they would be better as fictional narratives..

Games is a great theme, and might be well appreciated in Perplex City more than most.
What if people just start to take topics, and post what their specific will be and we just make sure we don't duplicate....? If you are serious about writing 1000 min (no real max necessary?) then just specify your topic here and get started. Anyone new should just check the list?
What do we think?

Hmm...having everyone write a story about the same topic sounds like a better idea then mine, actually. I like the "games" theme, there's a lot of different things that can come out of that, ranging from descriptions of the gaming culture on Earth to fictional works involving games...
All in favour say "I" ?

Sure, two short stories:
one about a stalker involved with coffee
the second about a talking monkey giving relationship advice.

I've got to read those two... Maybe we should put these on a wiki? With a no-changing-other-people's-stories rule, of course.

Personally, I think it would be great to go with the games theme. It does have a good range of topics and can be approached from a lot of different angles whilst keeping the overall task reasonably simple.

I dont think it should totally be about games, that would lose a bit of variety, I think we need to add stuff like modern day life aswell. So Perplexians can see what happens in normal days in our world. But obviously make it good since its a story lol. Not, woke up had breakfast, went to work etc... =P

You can DEFINITELY count me in, but hows this for an idea; a compilation of essays comparing all aspects of earth life to perplexian life, we could also adress differences in psychology and possible reasons due to their troubled history.
