Re: Music in games

Also, if you can get 4orty2wo PMs to talk about the music in LCP, you might want to touch on their upcoming game as well, insofar as they're willing to discuss it. As EDOC Laundry centers around a band, I would assume music might play a significant role there as well. It remains to be seen whether there actually is a real band, but with the link to PureVolume, I think it's safe to assume there will be real music.

There is also the album by Viard ("The Silver City") from PXC if you can get ahold of a copy of it. They say it will be available as a download from Hesh Records soon.

Following up on soem of rose-nli's topic suggestions.. maybe not fo rthe Pilot episode, but in later nights you could cover some of the topics of debate over at this thread at Immersion Unlimited.

Stuff like...i s there a line PMs shouldn't cross - besides the old breaking the law thing? How immersive is too immersive?

From that you could even segue into a discussion of new tactics ARGs might end up trying. I guess I've been thinking about the next step in making things mor eimmersive since I followed the links here on uf to sign up for AWARE 2.

ARGs have so much potential, thus I think there's plenty of topics and pontential for your radio show. Kudos!

I'll be listening.

This is starting to sound really cool, G3K! One thing I can offer, a small group of friends and I have been fooling around with placing codes in songs we've written. (You be suprised how many different ways this can be done, and still sound exactly like really good music!) If you want, I could send you a few songs, something to play in-between talking segments. Keep us posted!

CE - check your PMs Smile

I've procrastinated on all this over the weekend (damn you, Beyond Good and Evil!) but I'm getting initial show prep done tonight. Check your emails, everyone.

Still accepting ideas, though... if anyone has any audio they'd like to share, especially ARG-related music, please pass it along to g3kg3kSPLATgmail.com.

I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to handle callers... I can take requests for songs like I normally would, but as far as other forms of audience participation, what should I do?

Have a "topic" of the day/week/whatever - like the one I mentioned - there and ask callers to call in with their thoughts on the subject. Plenty of topics available with such a new genre.

It's too late for the first show, but if you find yourself able to get guests, like say some PMs, you can have people call in questions to there PMs. Judging from PM chats there's no shortage of questions for them. Again, ike rose-nli said. Seems Omnifam just finished up, so they've got PMs able to get chatty.

Oh, another topic (or regular segment even), have players call in wiht some of their favorite moments from ARG experiences. You know.. those moments where somethign was revealed and you went "Oh my god".. or you finally figured out how to solve a puzzle.. or, best of all, those moments where you hesitated, just briefly, and wondered wait.. this IS a game, right? Not only will these stories be fun for the ARG community to hear, but they can work to help draw in new members.

G3K... that sounds really, really awesome... I'll try to listen, I promise! ^^; No guarantees, though. Lotta work to do in these next days.

Ooh! I saw 'The Perfect Medium,' too. Fun, wasn't it? Smile I was a little disappointed by some things that just looked like they dripped wax on a flower. >.> Because... I'm guessing that they did. <.< Oh, and the curtain things... for example, flowers 'appearing' in front of a curtain. (Because, you know, no one could POSSIBLY be behind there. Razz) Ooh, but the photograph with the woman repeated, but fading... do you know what I mean? That was really quite beautiful, I thought. Heh. And they had the Cottingley Fairies! I was so excited.

*obviously had a really, really good time at the exhibit*

Anyway! </rant> I hope you enjoyed New York. ^^;

And, getting back to you, G3K... I will make an effort to tune in. Good luck!

Would this show be better as a podcast? I'm getting really nervous that this show isn't going to get picked up anyway, and a podcast is easier to do on my own time. I've got other frustrations, but I digress...

I don't want to let anyone down if I use my time Thursday night to pilot another one of my show ideas... but I'm really having a tough time deciding what I'm even going to do on the show. Arrgh.

well, much as I'd love an ARG radio show, I think you need to do whatever gives you the best opportunities. I can understand the reluctance to do such a niche show.

A podcast would be cool. Heck, most of your audience was likely to tune in online anyway. A podcast would allow them (and you) to do it at their (and your) convenience.

Whatever you decide, I think you know that you'll get support from us Smile

What you decide to do with your air time is your decision. However, I will put it this way: Not too many people have a show out there that people can go "You know what? I really don't know that much about this topic but it sounds interesting." Making it exciting is part of the job... and if you can take a subject like this one and make it entertaining by finding a way to fit a virtually unknown media form into their daily lives, then there is nothing you can't do in this business.

The key to your success is being able to take any subject and explain to the listeners why the topic is important to them, not just you. If your listeners feel like they can not relate to you or your subject matter then they will turn the station.

"ARG's - You'll never look at the world around you the same way again."

If anyone's got any music they want me to play on the show, now's the time to send it, btw.

Actually, you do not need an ipod to listen to a podcast. You just need an audio program that will play mp3s - so you can play them on just about any computer after you download them. If you want to upload it to your favorite mp3 player you can, but it's not required.

So I have indeed retooled my show, naming it "The Playground". I'll be playing a lot of "underground" music, including a lot of electronica and indie-rock stuff, plus mashups and bootlegs that wouldn't normally be played on the radio.

But it's called "The Playground" for another reason. I'll also discuss issues relevant to the gaming community, with gaming news and call-in discussion - including a particular emphasis on community gaming and ARGs. I'll be airing music created by game makers and game players. Who knows, the show itself may even become a game...

Since this will be the pilot episode, I won't have as much original content as I will in the future if the show gets picked up. This project still is in its infancy. But it's really important that I make a good impression, both on my program director and on my listeners.

So if this still sounds like something you'd be interested in, please tune in Thursday, December 8 from 8-10 PM (MST).

(That's 7-9 Pacific, 10-midnight Eastern, 3-5 AM GMT.)
