[INTERACTION] [EMAIL] Stevie 12/19

from Stevie to my 'daughter':

Quote:
Subject: Seth is OK

Alexandra,

Mommy says I am not allowed to get e-mails from Jack any more, and she told Raidar to delete them without reading them. You know he addressed the letter to Raidar? Who ever heard of sending an e-mail to one person and meaning it for someone else?

Uncle Seth gave me my Christmas present early. It's a book called Islandiia. It has a lot of pages.

Caspian showed me his Grand Canyon pictures that he put on his flikr page. Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon?

Stevie

I have another one:

Hylenna!

Thank you for the Euro pictures, Hylenna! I'll put them in my blog later.

Yes, my daddy said that Babelfish comes from a book by Douglas Adams, called the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It has "Don't Panic" on it in large friendly letters.

I was born in Kansas, but I have lived places where the people came from all over the world.

Uncle Seth gave me my Christmas present early, it's a book called Islandia. It is a make believe country on Earth. So far they don't have any magic things, just normal things, but it is like learning about a different culture.

Raidar envía los besos del perro para tí también.
Stevie

While I fully admit that I possibly only know part of the story, from what I can see, his email to Stevie wasn't that bad. Maybe a little over exuberent, but unless there was more than the "Raidar I am not even going to code this message it is urgent" email that I've heard about, I think it's way to much for Stevie state to everyone that "I'm not going to read Jack's emails anymore".

Nothing makes people want to play like knowing if they say the wrong thing that they won't be listened to anymore.

[META-ish] Psychological Needs

Well Rowan, I can totally understand your concern. However, we have to remember that we are dealing with a little girl here. Her psyche is still maturing and suceptable to damage. Although it is frustrating for us, as players, i think that the PM's have done a good job dealing with this realistically. I mean seriously. Look back at your own childhood. If your dad went missing, and your "uncle" might have gone that way too, wouldn't it be a little scary?

Anywho, I've said my piece.

Sherlock Holmes, Signing Off.

I must agree with Sherlock. Ignoring an errant email is an option, but not a very realistic one, especially when the recipient is 9 years old. No one is saying that Jack can no longer participate, he just can't email Stevie directly. He can still help solve puzzles, and probably email other characters if he explains himself.

Perhaps Jack's email was interpretted as an attempt from a Troll?

EDIT: New email from Stevie.

I promised Davina some more pictures of Earth and Stevie had been asking about my Flickr account so I wrote:

Stevie's response:

Hi Caspian,

After I got the e-mail from Jack, I ran down the hallway to Uncle Seth's apartment. He was making notes on something. Prolly his meeting with Professor Bronco. That Jack made me so mad! I'm not talking to him ever again!

Thank you for the pictures of the Grand Canyon. I will show them to Dr. Martha, she always talks about gardening on Earth a lot.

I like looking at stuff on Earth, but the last time we were there, I got tired too fast, even though I have to do excersices so I can go back to the ground gravity and not get hurt. They take too long. If I stayed up here all the time I wouldn't need to do them.

Uncle Seth gave me my Christmas present early! It's a big long book called Islandia. Uncle Seth said it was a make believe place too. It's make believe place on Earth, and they don't have any magic.

May your Earth Scenery always be wonderful,
Stevie

I'll be sure to include some "Jack's alright, he just made a mistake...
comments in my reply.

This is one META question I am not ignoring. We need to remember that while the characters are imaginary, the players are real. I don't think that cutting out one person from emailing is a good idea. For every person that posts here, there are many who don't. As Rowan said, nothing discourages players from communicating with players in-game then being slapped for their efforts.

Ignoring errant emails is part of what PMs do all the time. You don't think that people have emailed Bronco to tell him what is happening? Just because people don't post here that doesn't mean they are not emailing characters.

If they need a more realistic in-game way to handle this, they should say that all emails to a nine-year old girl from strangers have to be read by an adult before being given to her. They could clear the people who already have established a good relationship with her. Most parents wouldn't allow a nine-year old to receive and respond to emails directly in the first place.

It is also inconsiderate to email one player about the actions of another player. This only serves to generate cliques and lower morale of the players.

I don't think that Jack did anything wrong at all, if they don't want a child to be emailed by concerned strangers, they need to set up a better system.

You are mixing up two realities here Rose... there is no "they" in the alternate reality where Stevie lives, and there is no Stevie in the reality the PMs live in.

The fact of the matter is, in my opinion, that this is not a META discussion at all, there is no talk at all of someone being "cut out of the game", there's only the question of an in-game character reacting to what a player has done through interaction.

No PM said anyone is cut out of the game, Stevie only said that she is not allowed to read any more of Jack's e-mails, which is a direct effect of what he sent to her. The PM's chose a rather elegant (and realistic) way of dealing with the, from the viewpoint of the character Stevie, unsettling and perhaps even aggressive message, rather than ignoring it like it never happened.

The result of the way of interacting Jack chose, is that he is cut off from interaction with Stevie. Letting others know does not "generate cliques" or "lower morale" at all if you ask me, it sets the example of how a line can be crossed, and it also shows that we can and need to work together to play this game. And I very much agree with Caspian's take on this, there's probably a way to right the situation through social-engineering, as has been the case with many situations in this game, which is one more reason for us to know about it.

May I put in my two cents.
Now in case you didn't know, I'm Jack. Okay that starts this off on a low note.

Now, I e-mailed Seth to ask about this and how Raidar could screen them for Stevie. I also e-mailed Cordelia asking about it since, well, I actually have a chance of getting in touch with her which noone has really done
Quote:
Dear Mrs. Mae;

I just e-mailed to apologize for "The Stevie Incident". I hope you know what I am talking about, since you blocked my e-mails to her because of it. I would just like to say I'm sorry and was very tired that night. The reason the e-mail was so urgent was that I wasn't thinking straight. Also, it was directed to Raidar since Raidar does not have his own e-mail adress I know of. If he does please tell me what it is. I hope you accept this apology and that I am truly sorry for any damage I caused to anybody, especially Stevie.

From;

Jack Gamber
