So.. grumpyboy stopped by.. and just HANDED us the solve!

From the text file from the destegged image, the numbers correspond to elements on the periodic table. If you take the second letter of each you get

"theansuueryouseekisprofessormoriarty"

So if you email professormoriartySPLATmaefamily.info

You get this

Quote:
With no asteroid left for the ADT to focus on, the team was dissolved and I got a nice promotion. I contacted Bronco and told him that NASA had filed away the asteroid as a non-threat. Although Bronco acted surprised, I got the impression that he already knew the asteroid had vanished. I had a bad feeling that Bronco still had something up his sleeve.

There was a part deep inside me that wasn't surprised when Bronco showed up in my office in 1999. He offered me a position on a "new endeavor." At that point I was very happy with my career and my life. I told Bronco that I felt my debt to him had been filled. Unfortunately, Bronco didn't agree.

He told me that the asteroid hadn't really disappeared, but was in fact near the earth. He explained how he had reprogrammed the micro robots before the launch so they would "malfunction". I couldn't believe how I had failed to put the pieces together. Bronco threatened to expose me as his "accomplice" unless I cooperated.

Thanks,

Steven

Didn't solve it, but I have a feeling I know HOW to do it

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Notice how each picture has a star in it? Well, we need to divide the pictures into logical groups and connect the stars in each group. That should give us something...letters perhaps? Either that, or it's a connect-the-dots puzzle and we need to figure out an ordering of the pictures.

I'm getting flashbacks to UH. Scary, scary flashbacks.

Some guesses as to pictures:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Looks like there's a Shakespeare group. You have Wolfgang Puck, Othello (the Laurence Fishburn picture), Cordellia Mae.

Other items, you have Alyssa Milano as Phoebe from "Charmed", Leonardo di Caprio in some film posted (doesn't look like one from Romeo + Juliet, at least not according to imdb). And that's probably Ariel from The Little Mermaid.

We've been throwing a lot of picture guesses around in IRC. Here's a loose list from top left, skipping the ones that still baffle us.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Taurus, Leo, Ariel, puck, Othello, Cressida, Pandora, Antonio?, Callisto, Phoebe?, Prometheus, Cordelia, Ram (ares)

These are just early guesses. I wanted to loop in the forum to what's happening over on chat. Smile

IRC blocked at work Wink

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Anyway, sounds like 3 groups. Shakespeare, Zodiac, and Roman mythology (Pandora, Callisto, Phoebe).

Maybe it IS moons! Check out this list.

constellations

Perhaps each picture is a constellation or a well-known star from a constellaion and the star in the picture indicates which star in the constellation we need the name of?

We have since discovered that nearly every star is a moon. Here is an ALMOST complete list:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
(Dione?) -- Ariel -- ?
Europa/Io -- Juliet -- Puck
Desdemona -- Belinda -- Prometheus
(Little Red Book) -- Cressida -- Rosalind
(Butterfly) -- Pandora -- Pan
---------------Portia -- Cordelia
Callisto -- Phoebe -- Proteus -- Ganymede -- (Ares?)

Some of these are not in fact in the pictures, but related to them somehow.[/spoiler]

The last one is probably Titan.
Here's a good list.

In planetary order:

Jupiter (4)
Saturn (7)
Uranus (9)
Neptune (2)

My first line of attack was to use the 4792 somehow
e.g. convert to letters
combine (add or subtract) with J,S,U and N or (M,O,O and N!) in numerical form
also tried jjjjsssssssuuuuuuuuunnSPLATmaefamily.info
also considered the number of moons remaining that weren't given to us
i got 0(mercury), 0, 1, 2, 58, 26, 18, 11, 1(pluto)

Had no success yet, might be close or light years away!

Well, "Bronco's lucky number must be 4179"...close, but no cigar.
Confused (as usual)

Shying away from 4792, which I couldnt make any sense of, I tried toying with the first letter of each moon.

Unfortunatly, thats brought no results to speak of. At least not in the order of appearance in the puzzle. Listed that way there is an incidence of the same letter - 'p' unaltered - appearing three times in a row. This does not bode well for any basic substitution cipher. Of course it could be somethign more complex, but Im not so good with those yet. No anagrams popped up either.

Dumping this, I played around with both the first and last letters of the planets in a few different orders but have ran into little encouraging.

My next move will be to work on the list of planets (ie Sat, Uran, Nept, Jup, Uran, Uran..) but that looks even less likely than using the names of the moons. Nevertheless, I shall give it a shot...

Please note that both Dioen and Triton are still with ?
I haven been able to find the exact pictures yet.

I'm pretty sure about the triton because of the green 'legs' of the man in the left of the picture...

But not so sure about Dione. My guess was that the picture was a Celine Dion album, and so we added and 'e' to form Dione.... but we didnt need to add/remove anything in the other pictures, so maybe this is wrong
