I think the bonus question is more like a joke Shocked

Looking at the design crouchosarus posted, I immediatly thought of a binary solution... that can match with the bonus 'joke'. I'll try to work on this approach later... but today is a bad day Wink

Happy New Year!!

This can be transcribed as a base4 number in 2 ways - starting at the top or the bottom. For both base4 numbers I translated to base 10 then base40 (by hand/excel).

Base 4________Base 10________Base 40
2102023122___598746_________inhz
2213202012___686214_________j18n

I tried emailing these two 'names' but no reply yet. I'm too new to the game to recognise any meaning in these answers.

I'm coming back to looking at this approach again. I would love to know how you converted to Base40, I've tried but my brain hurts! I was thinking along the same lines but getting different answers, none of which worked either Confused

That's what I thought of, too. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did becuase I can't seem to find any binary solution that works

I just got a new idea for the think tank

If you take the awnsers on the chart and make the ones with the tops filled in 0's and the ones with the bottoms filled in 1's you get the letter C. Note that is also what you get if make C's and A's 0's since it is the same thing. So I thought it was useless until I remembered ROMAN NUMERALS! I went and found C=100 which I think is too small, so I went and took the awnsers and put them all in without the A's and the B's (not roman numerals) and got 800, which may still be too small but I am not sure. Maybe each letter is a numeral in something and we have to figure it out that way?

The quiz cover sheet says:

Quote:
Answer all the questions on the sheet provided.

Has anyone tried taking this literally and mailling a completed answer sheet? I don't have any pdf editing software...

i'm a total moron! I had a feeling it had something to do with the answers and not the ABCDs. Tried this 2 days ago but didn't see it! Rolling Eyes

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Not sure if the latest posts by Stevie and Seth were meant to be clues but when they talked about the puzzle, they both used the word "left". So I went back to the quiz answers and took the first character (leftmost):

Solar Energy
0.3g
Dr. Martha Crappert
Optical Disks
Athens
Miss Rose Mantling
Meta-physics
New Dawn
Carbon nano-fibres
4521m

S 0 D O A M M M N C 4

Anagrams to 40commands. Emailing 40commandsSPLATmaefamily.info gets the following reply:

-----------------------------------------------------------
Subject : Bronco wins...

Of course, everyone was shocked. The top scientists at NASA were speechless. Bronco's technology was so advanced that no one could even attempt to recreate what he had planned.

I announced that I had made a deal with Bronco. I agreed to work with Bronco and act as the NASA liason. NASA and the U.S. government had to agree to Bronco's terms. They weren't willing to be the ones responsible for single-handedly denying the earth this new power source. Nor were they willing to give up the scientific coup over all other countries. They decided to instead ride on the coat tails of Bronco and share in taking credit for solving the energy crisis. The general public was not informed of this discovery per the wishes of Bronco.

Thanks,

Steven

GREAT job grumpyboy!

As GB said, this next one has requires a new username and password. For the record, the password prompt reads:

Quote:
Dr. Awkward : I prefer pi 341406327726570427

The minds in #orbital noticed immediately that "Dr. Awkward" and "I prefer pi" are both palindromes.

Also, 341406327726570427 could be an approximation for pi if you insert a decimal after the first 3. So if we discover which approximation it is and who discovered it, perhaps that will lead somewhere as well.

this one didn't take as long Razz

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
enaxor first noticed that "Dr. Awkward" and "I prefer pi" are palidromes. At first we were thinking that perhaps the username is "palindrome(s)" and the password is the relationship between "341406327726570427" and "Access denied".

But I couldn't find any relationship so I started digging to see what that number might be. It kinda looks like a prime number but it's actually the product of 2 prime number, both of which are palindromes as well (palprimes). The 2 numbers are 345676543 and 987646789 which are the username and password we need.

Accessing the page with that un/pw gives:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Seth,

By now, you've seen a few of the minor pieces of evidence I've accumulated over the years. I'm sorry that I had to make you jump through all the puzzle hoops to get to them. I couldn't hide all of what I found behind the puzzles, even with all of my precautions. I hope that Stevie was able to help you on some of the puzzles. She was one of my "extra" precautions. I knew that by having Stevie crucial to some of the solves, that only the people I trust could get to this page. Anyone can make their way through a standard puzzle trail eventually. Unfortunately, if you've made your way to this page something horrible has happened to me. Whatever has happened, I hope that you have found my bundle of evidence and can soon take down Bronco. If you don't have it, don't worry. I've set up a bit of a backup plan for this situation. I've stashed copies of the rest of my evidence in several places down on Earth. Look in Raidar's maintenance folder for the file named "repairshops".

Can you do me a favor, old friend? Take care of Cordelia and Stevie for me, okay? Tell Cordelia that I love her with all my heart and that I'm sorry that this turned out the way it did. I never meant for it to tear our family apart. I wanted to bring Bronco down so we could be free to live our lives the way we wanted to. Let Stevie know that I'll always be there for her, even if she can't see me. Tell her that's a "Daddy Promise".

Steven

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I've emailed Seth. I'll leave the rest of the emails to you all. Looks like we have some possible passwords to access Raidar's compartment...

Nice solve GB!!

Remember Steven's sudoku puzzle from issue 2 of the newsletter? Those numbers happened to be the two answers from that puzzle.

I suppose at this point it would be redundant to thank you again, but what the heck.

Nice work, gb. Thanks a ton.

I have emailed Stevie asking her to try "Daddy Promise" on Raidar's compartment. I have also updated the Steven Mae's Puzzle Trail of the wiki to reflect the last two puzzle solves (someone - probably me - still needs to update most of the puzzles in the middle).

Again, way to go, grumpyboy. This calls for some jetpacks! Jetpack Jetpack Jetpack
