At any rate, I definitely get the feeling we're being pointed to something in that puzzle. Any thoughts?

Maybe the leftover letters or numbers from the grid make a code? That would be if we remove the letters going with the 7's?
Would that make sense in the context of this game - that Steven would be able to use the puzzle from the newsletter as part of this trail?

edit -
oh, yes, of course he could! I just noticed that he was the author of that particular puzzle. So perhaps he was setting that up as part of the trail, very clever I might add and good catch that you noticed this!

I attached a copy of the puzzle here.

x-posted to it's own thread also

Email from Seth to me:

Quote:
Subject: My Lucky Number?

Amber Joy,

I'm assuming that you ask because you are a part of the team Andrew was telling me about? If that's the case, I'm sure you've been poking around my investigation journal and already know the answer to your question.

I don't believe in luck. I believe that people can feel a certain excitement when something with a low probability of occurence happens to them, but I don't think there is a mysterious force named "luck" that transforms our lives; we transform them ourselves. For every event there is a logical reason behind its occurence.

People say they are lucky when they survive a car accident, when it was a seat belt that actually saved them. People will go through a series of ritualistic actions before hitting the spin button on a slot machine because they think they will somehow attract luck.

I'm a little concerned that I haven't heard back from Andrew or anyone on your team since I opened my investigation journal to you. I can tell people are accessing it from the website logs, but I have to wonder what the silence means. Andrew assured me that all of you were committed to helping me find out what happened to Steven.

So have you had any luck with the luck puzzle yet? I have a few theories I've been working on if you'd like to toss around some ideas.

Seth

Aww, he msises me... but in seriousness when Amber told me he was wodnerign, I sent this

Quote:
Seth,

I know we're not. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but this puzzle has been consuming my mind. I see it when I drive, when I go to job interviews, and we're not even gonna TALK about my dreams.

First, I'd like to thank you for opening your journal to us. You can count on us that we will be keeping it in the strictest of confidence.

As for this Lucky puzzle, my friends and I have been workign it constantly.. and sent some ridiculous emails. We've probably collectively sent well over a hundred by now. Our latest theory is the lucky number puzzle that Steven put into Orbicon's Newsletter #3, but it hasn't panned out quite yet. I'm begining to think you are right with your latest journal entry.. we need to step back a bit. I know I'm gripping so hard that theres no way I could see the forest for the trees.

You mentioned in your journal wonderign how we got the Alien message Puzzle? We'll I have to admit, that I had nothing to do with that one. I was trying all sorts of stuff, like converting the letters to numbers and then pairing.. when a associate who goes by the name of Sin Vraal figured it out, with Alexandra's mom's help in the actual translation... It wasn;t a code at all! It was another language , Vietnamese - Hyung to be precise. The message came out to of course be a dostoevsky quote.

The Thorn one was more of a group solve...Sin Vraal realized that there were 100 letters in the message and suggested mapping the letters to a 10x10 grid and first saw a few recognizable words. Looking at the fletters moving from top to bottom, I began to recognize that they were some german words. Amber and others set to work digilently attempting to piece where the words ended and translating them to english.. giving us a quote from The Little Prince.

Hopefully we'll find a solve for the Luck puzzle soon..

-Andrew

Been using my email at home where the server actually works (perhaps work's will be up today, but that's probably not going to happen).

Sadly, more dead ends

Using "Lowest number of obstacles" from the raidar email, Seth's only got one case:

oneSPLATmaefamily.info
1SPLATmaefamily.info

Same logic, variations on the Mae case number

MA51920SPLATmaefamily.info
51920SPLATmaefamily.info

Anyway, four more things that don't work so don't bother. Mad

no mas

This game is fun but I am totally frustrated with this puzzle and the confusing, seemingly contradictory clues (which I am sure will make sense when we finally get the answer.)

I was wishing we could invite them to play poker with us in a room at LCP so we could just talk it out! Waiting for emails and blogs with vague and confusing hints is maddening - and I missed the whole first day people were trying to solve this one. So I am sure other people may be feeling even more frustrated than I am.

Good luck people, I can't look at this one anymore, but I am sure you will get it soon!

So why don't we? Poker's a lucky game, maybe it'll give us all a little perspective.

Should we point seth to the puzzle in newsletter #3? Since the puzzle/message was intended for him, maybe he would have an idea as to what it means? Confused

No trouting necessary. I am not sure it was posted. I know I replied to Seth's email to me and told him about the newsletter, but I did not post that. Although Dionysus probably posted it with his email to Seth. Anyway, I am glad you are working on this. You have brought some great ideas to the table.

The context of this communication can be found here, but here's the part that might be relevant to this puzzle:

Libby the black lab, by proxy of caspian_x wrote:
Understand programming restraints. Stevie's friends stuck on Steven Mae puzzle. Clues point to luck, lucky, seven, maya angelou, and possibly the chinese zodiac. Puzzle assumed to be directed at Seth Adams. Requests: One. Seth Adams birthday with year. Two. Combinations of above clues in relation to Seth Adams. Three. Any unusually fortunate events in Seth Adam's history. Four. Take good care of Stevie.

The first sentence is in reference to Raidar's last email, saying that programming prevented him from leaving Stevie to search for Steven (or taking her anywhere potentially dangerous) or keeping information secret from any member of the Mae family.

Raidar wrote:
One, unable to locate documentation of Seth Adams complete birthday. Two, seven is statistically significant in rolls of two dice, seven dwarfs, seven deadly sins, seven virtues, "The Trumpton fire brigade," seven orders of architecture, seven seas, 'Seven Sisters.' The seventh son of a seventh son is supposed to be born gifted. Harold Percival theory has seven minds and seven faculties. Seven Lucky Artifacts; wishbone, rabbit's foot, white elephant charm, key with heart-lock , four-leaf clover, swastika, horseshoe. Maya Angelou acclaimed as a poet laureate, she never held that position in the US Library of Congress. Chinese Zodiac, a steryotype of personality traits related to one's birth sign under the chines astrological system. Unable to make any correlatiuons based on avalable data. Three, insufficient data available. Four, that is primary program. Take good care of Caspian.

Raidar's hints are probably totally unrelated to the puzzle, but I thought I'd post them just the same. Gotta get back to work for now, but I agree the newsletter is a good path to follow. I knew "reduce obstacles" sounded familiar! Anyway, good luck with the puzzle!

I think it's nice how Seth is now part of our team and none of it feels unnatural and like it's breaking the flow of the investigation.
At first I wasn't in favor of bugging Seth and exchanging puzzle information with him, but I changed my mind, because it seems like it works well and the exchanges between you and Stevie - and your respective dogs, of course - are ever more fun to read.

Just wanted to say this is cool. Smile

Along the lines of "making your own luck," etc., I tried a zillion variations of the phrase "fortune favors the bold," including "thebold," "bold," "fortunesfavorite," etc.

I knew it was a long shot, but I wanted to try it. Anyway, no dice.

That is (or possibly is) a nod to a previous ARG from the PMs. Smile

Did anyone try the answers to September's puzzle? I am untalented with the number thing so if someone wants to take a crack at it - play on.

I tried OpportunitySPLATmaefamily.info and Opportunityknocks. I also tried some other luck related things and oddly enough received two emails from Lucky at Last Call Poker...but I'm sure thats just a coincidence....right
